Estrid Høgdall is a Clinical Professor in Molecular Pathology at the University of Copenhagen and Head of the Molecular Unit, Department of Pathology at Herlev Hospital. Furthermore, She is also director of the National Biobank in Denmark covering regional cross-national infrastructure for biobanking. In this episode, we’ll be talking about Danish biobanks and we will know among other interesting topics: Why Denmark is unique in this field? Why are the biobanks so important for researchers? What is currently the most exciting thing happening in the genomics area....and the steps to follow to ensure patient confidentiality. CIRCULAR VISION is a European Horizon 2020 FET-open project (by fostering novel ideas) and it is coordinated by PI Birgitte Regenberg who is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen.

Our second Podcast episode 2 is out. In this episode, we speak to Prof. Antonio Gasbarrini and Franco Scaldaferri from Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy. They join us to talk about their role and responsibilities in the CIRCULAR VISION project. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), represent chronic disorders with a major health care impact, currently affecting ~3 million individuals in the EU, for an estimated direct disease-related costs amount of €4.6-5.6 billion in the EU. Prof. Antonio Gasbarrini is a full Professor of Gastroenterology at the Catholic University of Rome and Chairman of the Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Division at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital, Catholic University of Rome as well as director of the postgraduate program in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy at the Catholic University of Rome. Franco Scaldaferri is gastroenterologist at the GastroUnit of Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Pancreatic and lung cancer are among the most common causes of cancer deaths in Denmark and worldwide due to late diagnosis and lack of methods for specific treatment and recurrence tests. The development of biomarkers for early detection as pursued in CIRCULAR VISION will dramatically change the health outcome of patients with pancreas and lung cancer since more patients will be radically operated and have a possibility for long time survival.
