Nina Lance is a Korean-American painter and artist based in Los Angeles. Prior to devoting her time to art and painting, she was a professional photographer for 10 years. Her work has been published in leading industry sites and magazines such as Style Me Pretty, The Knot, and Italian Vogue. Nina also worked in the fashion industry as a designer. Her inspirations include travel, interior design, music, and her life in Southern California. Although she is self-taught, she has been painting and creating since her youth.

Every time I speak with Marlena Myles, I am reminded to focus on the things in life genuinely worth our appreciation. Marlena is a Native American digital artist – she’s recognized as one of the few Dakota women creating digital art that brings a modernity to indigenous history, languages, and oral traditions. Marlena is a force who not only fights to preserve indigenous traditions, symbols and culture that refuse to be erased by western traditions and norms. She creates at a prolific level, from her digital prints to interactive holographic public art and murals, to fabrics and children’s books and animations. She recently launched her own literary press. At Alice Riot, we’re delighted to represent one of Marlena’s works, Garden of Harmony – a piece brimming with Dakota symbolism that honors the plants, pollinators and morning star that all connect with Unci Maka, or Grandmother Earth. It’s in a single glance both history and the future, with an accessible appeal that anyone, from any culture, can recognize and appreciate. She’s also a shrewd critic of the Western systems and norms that have created some of the very real challenges facing the planet. In fact, she’s one of the rare voices I’ve heard in the art world against NFTs for an obvious reason most don’t consider: the amount of literal energy needed to power those darn little digital tokens. You know, our energy grid, still mainly based on fossil fuels that ultimately destroy the ecosystem she celebrates in her art. I’m hell-bent on having her collaborate with Adam Ant, one of her favorite pop culture icons whom she equally appreciates for his respect of indigenous culture in his own work. Bernadine Franco clearly fits the role of art-world interpreter. Her work is to give women artists a voice, and set them in their rightful place in the canon of American art. She employs a multi-layered practice that is fun and accessible. She teaches, writes, speaks, is the producer and host of the Beyond the Paint with Bernadine podcast and designs tours centered on contributions by women in museum and gallery collections. I had a blast speaking with Bernadine – she reminds me in some ways of listening Lynne Rosetto Kasper, host of that iconic National Public Radio cooking series, The Splendid Table. And I mean it: this is the art history professor I should have had back in the day, because I never would’ve missed a class. As an Afghan woman born and raised in France and living in the U.S., abstract artist Manaz Raiszadeh is a literal voice to listen to – through her own words and her art – in these very, very strange times. Manaz is fascinated by the places she has been and the stories we are told. She literally creates daily in her home studio in San Diego, working in acrylic paint, oil pastels, paper scraps, crayons, and charcoal mediums – she enjoys the natural, unexpected and flexible aspects of those mediums. In this conversation, we cover a lot of ground beyond her body of work, discussing the state of world with the Taliban taking control of her parent’s homeland and women’s rights suddenly threated in very real ways in the U.S. She counters my angst – how can we possibly advance women artists in a meaningful way when fundamental rights for women and girls are still so threatened, even in 2021? – with an approach that is optimistic, kind and generous. Even with the state of this f****d up world, perhaps we can and should turn to the women who create works that soothe, heal and fill our hearts – so that we have the energy to keep fighting. The bio for Jerry Saltz is pretty straightforward: He’s an American art critic. Since 2006, he has been senior art critic and columnist for New York Magazine. Formerly the senior art critic for The Village Voice, he’s been nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, which he received in 2018. He’s also the author of the New York Times bestseller, How to Be An Artist. But don’t be fooled by this perfunctory CV. This guy is literally everywhere – EVERYWHERE – in the fine art world. He’s perhaps best known for being an early adopter of social media platforms for art criticism with millions of followers across IG, Twitter and Facebook. He can be polarizing, for sure. I happen to think he’s hilarious. He’s acerbic, self-deprecating, and very clear on his role as critic - an art world punk who calls it as he sees it. While our intent is for WTAF to feature women’s voices as much as possible, I think Jerry is an ally worth having back in the future. Stephanie Manasseh, founder of Accessible Art Fair, lives up to her reputation as a disruptor in the art world. Based in Brussels, by way of Montreal, Prague and Milan, Manasseh launched the first Accessible Art Fair in 2007, grounded in her mission to bring together talented artists without gallery representation with an art buying public. In 2011, she launched SM Art Advisory, a service that offers personalized art consultancy for corporate and personal collections. Her current collaborations include The Nine, a private members’ club in Brussels; a Sol LeWitt exhibition at the Jewish Museum in Belgium; and Berkshire House, a new art and event space in Massachusetts owned by the sculptor Jonathan Prince. A date for the 2022 Accessible is set in Brussels, though details remain tentative as the world continues to navigate the pandemic.
