Hi, we are Escapade. Welcome to our 6th episode ! Escapade has so many new things to tell you: we have new opening music and new guest speakers !!! Since university, Riku has always been one of the top students in class and has had a variety of experiences going abroad. She has been to eleven countries including Malaysia, Vietnam , Cambodia, Singapore, etc. Riku, like many other students, planned to go study abroad to Spain but she couldn’t because of the pandemic. It was a devastating situation for her, however, she broke through it and found a volunteer program to Cambodia in 2022. This time we invited her to share some stories about her trip to Cambodia to help Cambodian children as a teacher and share some opinions on a hot topic: Education and Asian Parents. In the first part of this episode, Riku shared her experience in her volunteer activities in Cambodia. She was teaching English voluntarily at an elementary school in Cambodia. We compared some of our own experiences at elementary school in Japan, Cambodia and Vietnam. Riku told us a lot about education in Cambodia, where children still have difficulties in having a proper education. In the previous episode, we discussed with Riku about her stories in Cambodia. In the second part of this episode, we brought up some of the hot urgent topics that happened recently regarding education in countries that we grew up in. First topic is the situation where parents put too much pressure on their children, which has become a threat to decreasing mental health in teenagers. The second topic is the opposite, a situation where parents are not able to give their children proper care, which is a serious problem that we need help from society. At the end of the episode, Riku shared her experience on working at a global company and how she keeps up her English. Happy New year! Sorry for being on hiatus for a few months! We have been editing and thinking about the journey of Escapade in 2022, so now we are finally able to bring you a new episode. This episode was recorded in December 2021, featuring one of our professors at university, a passionate mentor who helped us to improve our English and inspired us to found Escapade. Tomoko Kawachi ( Kawachi sensei ) has been teaching at Kanagawa University for almost ten years. She has been focusing on teaching Communication in English, in order to help students communicate well using the language in daily conversation and presentation. Also, she started English Cafe at Kanagawa University, an event where students presented various topics in English and discussed them. As Kawauchi sensei said, she took her Master's degree in TESOL ( Teaching English to Speakers of other languages ) in America. As you know, this year the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three scientists, and one of them, Syukuro Manabe, is given for his work contributing to understanding how the Earth’s climate is changing and making it clear what human’s effect on climate change is. Hearing this topic, we decided to invite a young girl who has a great passion towards Climate change, who has been turning her knowledge about the problems into action. Hikari Matsumoto has been a member of Friday for Future of Japan for one year, and she has been actively participating in a lot of events that protect the environment.
