The PREFU Spin is hiding a simple reality - it could be better
2026/09/30
The PREFU is out and media will tell you it’s lovely for a terrible Finance Minister who is deliberately downplaying what would make the economy and government books even better - which is the opposite to her approach of slashing and burning.

What PREFU Actually Has In It
2026/09/28
I asked Treasury what was in PREFU and they said "you're not Nicola Willis, so you're not finance minister so no" but they did tell me what the PREFU covers and how to tell if the results are good or bad!
Weird Weekend behind, woerd week ahead
2026/09/27
From a NZ first candidate demanding to have her semi-automatic weapons back to Ai incorrect answers and campaign launches - it's been an odd weekend.

Good News! yes, actually good things.
2026/09/25
I’ve had a few people reach out feeling a bit down about everything - and I get it - it feels like a lot going on right now. So I thought it was a good time to remember that there is some good news happening out there!

Media Reaction to Dirty Work Proves Hagar Correct
2026/09/23
Nicky Hager’s new book, Dirty Work: The Taxpayers’ Union and New Zealand’s Hard Right, is out now. In it, Hagar details the ways Jordan Williams and his web of connected astroturf groups work some of their plans in action and outcomes they caused and how their playbook works - including how media is enabling it. So how did media react? They proved Hager right.

Do you REALLY need to Scrutinise a Government?
2026/09/22
Law makers and politicians who keep avoiding public scrutiny are dangerous anywhere int rh world it happens - it limits how much the public knows - stopping informed decision making, it limits an understanding of impacts and changes and limits the ability to stop harmful laws before they hurt people. And this government loves to avoid its scrutiny.
The Power of the Verb to Shape The Election
2026/09/22
Headlines can have a massive impact on how we perceive media and position our views on issues - but did you know a single word can help subconsciously shape public perception and highlight an outlet’s bias?

Coffee & Context: The Audience Commodity
2026/09/21
Are you the audience or are you the product when it comes to what is being sold by mainstream media? There's a train of thought that media don't exist to sell content to audiences, it's to sell audiences to advertisers which impacts how media operates, what it gives focus to and how alternative media producers (like this channel) have to adapt to models that don't work the same way.

This Week's The News: 18 September, 2026
2026/09/18
In this week’s This Week’s The News, The Coalition reminds Maori MPs they have special rules for them that not everyone can access, a raft of new policies to horror and joy of all sorts and media plans for election night coverage while you hide behind the couch and pray for the best. All that and more on This Week’s the News.

With Lobbyists like these, who needs experts?
2026/09/17
The clearly expected news that someone was arrested for assault while trying to undertake a Citizens Arrest under new laws that went ahead despite expert advice that this exact outcome would happen is just the latest in a very long line of outcomes the government were told would happen by experts then they did. It’s clear experts aren’t who the government listens to but a new report from Victoria University sheds some light on who they really do listen to.

Are There Laws About Honesty in Elections Elsewhere?
2026/09/14
I’ve had a lot of people point out we need a regulator for political lying this year for some reason which I am sure is totally unrelated to all the lies and misleading statements being made by the coalition parties. So I thought I’d looking what actual laws are in place overseas about monitoring BS in campaigns.
