#234 Would You Pay $60 for Bread? We Asked Graz | Live Podcast Part 2
2026/10/05
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻 english below PART 2 AUS GRAZ! Wir bringen unsere HOW TO AUSTRIA Tour in die Superbude Wien. Kommt vorbei! ❤️ The Wurst Guide – immer montags – immer deppat. The Wurst Guide to Living in Austria ist eine Produktion der Werbeagentur The Wurst Agency und wird gesponsert vom Online-Magazin Vienna Würstelstand – dein Magazin rund um Wien.   PART 2 FROM GRAZ! 💚 After our highly necessary Styria crash course in Part 1, this time we’re tackling the really important questions. For example: Can a loaf of bread be worth 60 dollars? Martin Auer opened RYE in New York and suddenly it seems like the entire internet has an opinion about it. So naturally, we asked the people of Graz. How does a 60-dollar loaf of bread go down in Styria? Is it genius, completely ridiculous, or somehow both? And while we were at it, we asked ourselves: What other famous Styrian things could we sell for 60 dollars? The answers were, as always, extremely serious. Highlights of the episode: 🍞 The 60-dollar bread from GrazWe talk Martin Auer, RYE in New York and the big question: how much can bread cost before Austria collectively starts to panic? 🎤 Graz has opinionsWe ask our live audience what they think about the viral bread — and they do not hold back. 💸 What else from Styria could we sell for 60 dollars? We made a list. For legal and culinary reasons, we’ll leave it at that. 💩 The Top 5 worst-smelling animal poopsYes. This is a real segment. No. We’re not entirely sure how we got there either. Lots of nonsense, lots of audience participation and a lot of laughing. Good. Real. Styrian.Or something like that. That’s Part 2 of our live podcast from Graz. ❤️ Another huge thank you to Alex and Kristina Stegisch from DAS POD for inviting us and making the night happen. And next up: 🎤 October 22 — LIVE in ViennaOur final live podcast recording of the year! We’re bringing our HOW TO AUSTRIA Tour to Superbude Vienna. If you’ve ever wanted to experience The Wurst Guide live, this is your last chance in 2026. Come hang out with us! ❤️ The Wurst Guide — every Monday, always deppat. #233 The Wurst Guide to Living in Steiermark | Live Podcast Part 1
2026/09/28
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻english below WE’RE BACK! Tickets  Wir bringen unsere HOW TO AUSTRIA Tour in die Superbude Wien. And Graz, you were amazing. 🥹A sold-out show, a pretty unbeatable view of the Graz Clock Tower and an audience that happily went along with pretty much every bit of nonsense we threw at them. Not! A huge thank you to Alex and Kristina Stegisch from DAS POD for inviting us to Graz and making this whole night happen. ❤️ For this show, we wanted to find out: What actually makes Graz and Styria so special? Naturally, we did not approach this scientifically. Instead, we conducted a highly professional comedy field study with our live audience. There was plenty of nonsense, some very revealing audience participation and a much-needed Styria crash course for Jacob. Highlights of the episode: 🌲 Styria 101 for JacobWhat does an Australian need to know to even remotely pass as someone who understands the Green Heart of Austria? 🎤 Graz, you’re part of the episodeWe questioned our live audience and got significantly more information than we were expecting. 💚 So what actually makes Styria so special? We talk Graz quirks, Styrian culture and all those things that people outside Styria may never fully understand. 😳 A pretty big surprise for JacobThat’s all we’re saying. Seriously. This is only Part 1 — Part 2 is coming next week. And after that, we keep going: 🎤 October 22 — LIVE in ViennaOur final live podcast recording of the year! #232 One Last Laugh Before We Disappear
2026/08/24
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻 We’re taking one whole month off and will be back on September 28. Okay, TWG Gang. We did it. We survived another year of this completely random, slightly unhinged thing we call The Wurst Guide to Living in Austria. And what a year it’s been. Record podcast listeners, thousands of new people joining the gang, live shows, guests, sponsors, arguments, questionable opinions and an unreasonable amount of work. So before we disappear for our very fashionably late summer break, we’re getting a little sentimental. We look back at our favourite podcast moments of the past year, talk about our packed Kultursommer show (and why we were convinced five people would turn up), and discuss why Jacob is fundamentally incapable of dealing with emotions & especially success. But don’t worry, it doesn’t stay wholesome for long. We also get into why Austrians refuse to believe in themselves, why Jacob has officially declared war on Lüften, the very Austrian art of wrapping yourself in a towel at the swimming pool, why old ads were somehow much more unhinged, and some truly beautiful Austrian phrases involving asses and sugar. And we look ahead at what’s next for The Wurst Guide: and where we want to take this weird little podcast in the future. Goodbye. For now. Thank you for listening, watching, coming to our shows and somehow continuing to be part of this weird little gang. We’re proud of you. We’re proud of us. Die Technik is a Hund!
2026/08/17
We had such a great time at Kultursommer Wien! Full house, not a single spare seat, and lots of funny conversations with the audience about what makes the perfect summer day in Vienna. Unfortunately, we had some technical issues with the recording... such a shame. Hear you next week! Kisses & bussis Jacob & Gabriel
#231 The Austrian accent gets you laid abroad w/ Nychos
2026/08/10
Nychos is one of the most internationally recognised street artists to come out of Austria - specifically Styria - with his enormous anatomical murals appearing on walls around the world. In this episode, Jake and Nychos go well beyond street art. They talk about living abroad, how leaving Austria changes the way you see Austrian culture, and that strange in-between feeling of still being Austrian while building a life somewhere else. There’s also an important discovery: apparently, the Austrian accent can get you laid abroad. From there, things spiral beautifully into Austrian humour, identity, emotional weirdness, cultural habits and why German spoken with an American accent sounds completely ridiculous. They get into: + Growing up in Styria and becoming a globally known street artist + Being Austrian while living abroad + Seeing Austria differently once you leave + The international appeal of the Austrian accent + Austrian humour, identity and emotional baggage + Why leaving home can make you understand it better + German spoken with an American accent + Casually psychoanalysing Austrians as a people It’s a monster of an episode, but one worth sticking with until the end. #230 How the Heat Is Changing Vienna
2026/08/03
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻 Jacob is back from wintery Australia and immediately gets slapped in the face by Vienna’s second heatwave of the summer. He and Gabriel compare notes on what extreme heat does to the city, why Austrians announce 38-41 degrees like an incoming natural disaster, and how everyone tries to cool down without completely losing it. #229 Things I Love and Hate About Austria | with Annabel Lubega from Vienna Würstelstand
2026/07/27
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻 Annabel Lubega is a content creator at Vienna Würstelstand. She was born in Austria, grew up in Singapore and Uganda, and moved back to Vienna three years ago. The culture shock hit her immediately. In this episode, she shares what she loves and hates about Austrian culture. Her hot takes include: Everyday racism in Austria: from inappropriate comments to people asking to touch her hair. Why is Wiener Grant treated as something to be proud of? Why is it so difficult to make friends in Austria? Why don’t Austrians greet each other? Why does nobody talk openly about money? Why do Austrians split the bill down to the last cent? What are the best Austrian phrases? And why is Brickerl so popular? Annabel also shares things she genuinely loves about Austria: Schwimmbad fries, the annual siren test and Arabella Kiesbauer.
2026/07/20
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! The Wurst Guide – immer montags – immer deppat.    Werbepartner dieser Folge ist der Kultursommer Wien. Well, not quite: he brought in some support from his good friend and Ö3 colleague Daniela Schmied. Dani has already appeared in an episode of The Wurst Guide, so our most dedicated listeners might remember her. Since it’s hot, it’s summer, and our ears desperately needed to cool down, we decided to record this special episode outdoors. We headed to Vienna’s Green Prater – which currently looks more like a steppe than an oasis – and found ourselves a shady bench. With the school holidays in full swing, we use the opportunity to dig through our memories and unpack the funniest, strangest and most embarrassing stories from our school days. From incredibly stupid cheating tricks and a naked teacher to spin the bottle, first kisses, first nights at the disco and fake IDs – it’s all in there. But first, Dani brings a story about Austrian astrology legend Gerda Rogers to Zetteltime. The two recently recorded a radio show together, so naturally, Dani shares a little behind-the-scenes gossip. A nostalgic and wonderfully summery episode filled with laughter – perfect for dozing off under a shady tree or while lying by the outdoor pool. Enjoy!
#227 Secret Council Corners and a Schuss of Milk: Is English Losing Its Main Character Energy?
2026/07/13
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻 Jacob is on a mission to find German words that deserve to be stolen by the English language — from herumgurken to a Schuss of milk. Gabriel introduces him to the deeply cursed world of Chatroulette, they accidentally pitch an idea of a TV show, and somehow the conversation spirals from Van der Bellen and Trump to Indigenous acknowledgements, Viennese dialect, Nazi-sounding German, and whether English is slowly losing its global main character energy. Also: why business emails are starting to sound like ChatGPT talking to ChatGPT — and why Geheimratsecken should obviously be translated as secret council corners. this text is written ofc by ChatGPT Episode highlights: 🏄 New feelings unlocked – Crowdsurfing, skydiving, and the strange joy of doing things your survival instinct politely disagrees with. 🗣️ German words English desperately needs – Jacob wants to reverse the language theft and bring words like herumgurken, schnitzen, and Schuss into everyday English. 📺 A TV show pitch nobody asked for – Gabriel and Jacob accidentally create a television concept. Producers, unfortunately, please call. 🌍 Language, politics & identity – From Indigenous acknowledgements in Canada and Australia to the dilution of Viennese dialect and the eternal question: is English losing its sparkle? 🤖 ChatGPT vs. ChatGPT: the office edition – Business emails are getting so obviously AI-written that soon, no humans will be involved. Just bots politely circling back forever.   The Wurst Guide – immer montags – immer deppat.    Werbepartner dieser Folge ist der Kultursommer Wien. 2026/07/08
In this special episode of The Wurst Guide to Living in Austria, we team up with SPDL (Siemens Personaldienstleistungen GmbH) to explore a job many of us think we understand... until we actually meet the people doing it. This time we're diving into the role of Junior Sales (m/w/d) Fire Safety. What does a sales person at Siemens actually do all day? How technical do you need to be? What makes somebody good at sales? And why does getting a signed contract feel a little bit like winning Olympic gold? To find out, Gabriel and Jake turns up to Siemens City in Vienna - Jake wearing flip-flops (a decision he immediately is made to regret) - and meet sales expert Anja Rajic and then head to St. Pölten to speak with Fritz Treiber, Senior Sales Manager at Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings Area East. Along the way we discover: – Why sales is much more about people than products – The skills that separate good sales people from great ones – What it's really like starting a career at Siemens and their partners – Why "the sale before the sale" matters – And why nobody should wear flip-flops to a customer meeting About the role:Junior Sales (m/w/d) Fire Safety 📍 St. Pölten ⏰ Full-time (38.5h) 💰 From €3,600 gross/month 🤝 Structured onboarding with an experienced senior colleague 🚀 Opportunity to take over an existing customer portfolio This episode is part of our ongoing series with SPDL, where we're exploring jobs in Austria that might just be your next career move. #225 Does Austria shrink u from being who u really are?
2026/06/29
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! 🍻Jake is flying solo this episode because Gabriel is off on holidays. So this one gets a little more personal: a diary-entry-meets-cultural-rant about whether Vienna shrinks you, or just quietly asks you to turn the volume down. Jake talks about the strange feeling some internationals get here — that comfort, cynicism, bureaucracy, and Viennese subtlety can make you smaller if you’re not careful. But he also asks whether we give the city too much power, and whether the trick is to stop waiting for Vienna’s permission to be fully yourself. In this episode, Jake talks about: Why Austrians knock on tables instead of clapping, and why this may be the most emotionally constipated form of praise ever invented The feeling that Vienna can “shrink” people who are creative, ambitious, foreign, loud, chaotic, or simply too alive before 10am Whether Vienna feels small because of its size, or because its social circles, institutions, and approval systems can feel tight The clichés around Vienna being “a village,” “comfortable,” negative, jealous, and resistant to change Why Viennese cynicism can be funny, useful, and also a wet blanket for people trying to build something new The Berlin comparison: Berlin gives permission, Vienna makes you earn legitimacy The danger of living too long in “guest mode” as someone not born here Why being foreign can be a creative advantage, not a weakness with extra paperwork Vienna’s history of loud, radical, world-changing people — from Freud, Klimt, Schiele and Loos to Red Vienna and the Vienna Circle The idea that maybe Vienna doesn’t shrink you — maybe it compresses you Why the most Viennese thing you can do might be to stop preserving the past and start pissing off the present How to keep going anyway, like a stubborn donkey with one direction and just enough German to know when someone is underestimating you 💛 UNTERSTÜTZE UNS Ihr könnt uns jetzt finanziell unterstützen! 2026/06/15
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION BELOW    UNTERSTÜTZE UNS: 👉Almose https://steadyhq.com/en/the-wurst-guide-to-living-in-austria/about 👉Buch https://www.thalia.at/shop/home/artikeldetails/A1070237440   🎤 Live Shows Es gibt wieder Live-Podcast-Shows! After a month apart, Gabriel and Jacob are finally back in the studio together — just the two of them — and they talk about: 🗣️ “interracial” — why you can say it in English, but can’t simply translate it into German 🧠 why “Zuversicht” is not the same as “confidence” 🇦🇹 what “doch” and “so” actually mean in German 💬 why some words are more about feeling than direct translation 📚 “Schau ma mal” Part 2? We’re slowly running out of chapters 🍷 Gabriel was on two juries: the Austrian Cabaret Award and Ö1 Wine 🎤 Jacob went to South by Southwest in London and brought back hot takes from tech, music, film and the creative industries ✈️ Jacob’s Ryanair story: broken Viennese, punchline included The Wurst Guide — every Monday, always stupid.
#222 Warum hängen in Österreich überall tote Tiere an der Wand?
2026/06/08
Big thanks to Ottakringer, Vienna’s independent beer brand, for sponsoring this episode and supporting our independent podcast. Cheers! The Wurst Guide – immer montags – immer deppat.      ENGLISH BELOW  UNTERSTÜTZE UNS: 👉Almose https://steadyhq.com/en/the-wurst-guide-to-living-in-austria/about 👉Buch https://www.thalia.at/shop/home/artikeldetails/A1070237440   🎤 Live Shows Es gibt wieder Live-Podcast-Shows! Kontakt: 📩 [email protected] 📩 [email protected] Feedback, Kooperationen oder Werbepartner-Anfragen welcome.     In this episode, we read from our book “Schau ma mal – An Australian and a Viennese Guy Search for the Heart of Austria.” The chapter is called “Dead Animals on the Wall.” And honestly, that already says a lot. Because the moment you leave Vienna, Austria suddenly becomes a place where things that used to be alive are hanging on walls. Antlers. Deer heads. Pheasants. Some random forest creature with glass eyes. But why? Because of hunting tradition, status, memories and decor. We talk about hunting culture, countryside traditions, Gasthaus decor, Austrian coziness with a slight horror twist — and why some things only start feeling weird when someone from the outside points them out. And now we want to know from you: What is it like where you’re from? Do people in your country also hang dead animals on the wall? Or is this a very specific Austrian thing?   Episode highlights 🦌 Why antlers suddenly appear everywhere once you leave Vienna 🪶 Antlers, deer heads, pheasants & co: Austria’s unofficial wall art 🌲 What hunting culture has to do with countryside life, tradition and a sense of home 👀 Why you only notice some things once someone from the outside points them out 💬 And the big community question: Do people in your country also hang dead animals on the wall?
