Ten Minutes With... Jennifer Chate Find Jenny Chate: Linkedin Big Empathy: Supporting People in Psychological Injury and Crisis Rhea Mercado chats with Jenny Chate, a former high school teacher, about workplace bullying, psychological injury, and how the brain responds to perceived danger. Jenny explains the limbic system’s threat scanning and how adrenaline and sugar release can shut down the prefrontal cortex, leaving someone overwhelmed, unable to think or communicate clearly, and feeling unsafe. She advises staying near (not confronting) a person in crisis, offering simple reassurance like “You are safe here,” and not leaving them alone, sharing her own vivid workplace crisis experience and how her husband supported her by staying calmly connected. Drawing on her work with overwhelmed teenagers, she reframes many outbursts as fear rather than bad behavior, notes how past childhood trauma can impair self-regulation, and outlines her Big Empathy framework: behavior has meaning, impact before information, and genuine curiosity. 00:00 Content Warning 00:30 Meet Jenny Chate 02:04 Psych Injury Basics 03:41 Crisis Response Tips 05:56 Jenny’s Breakdown Story 07:15 Why Staying Close Helps 10:06 Trauma and Self Regulation 11:33 Big Empathy Framework 12:42 Wrap Up and Credits   "Ten Minutes With" is brought to you by The Intelligent Rebellion and is a Threesticks Production.  Copyright (c) Threesticks Pty Ltd & Rhea Mercado (R) The team who produce the The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, and Ten Minutes With Podcast acknowledge the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which the podcast is recorded. Ten Minutes With... Fiona Belton Find Fiona Belton: Linkedin Rhea Mercado chats with Fiona Belton, an accredited exercise physiologist in Adelaide with 37 years in the industry who moved from clinical work into management for about 20 years and later pivoted back to clinical practice. Fiona is now running her own business focused on work injury, income protection, and life insurance. Fiona and Rhea recount meeting in person after their rejected ESSA Conference workshop submission and went on to run the workshop supported by Return to Work SA. Fiona describes starting her career working for physiotherapists in the work injury space and seeing exercise physiology scope evolve over decades. Both argue exercise physiology are often introduced too late on claims and should be early intervention for physical and psychological injuries, emphasizing EPs’ role beyond exercise prescription in behaviour change, routines, sleep, energy, and trauma-informed care. They close by suggesting a future episode to dive into treatment programs. 00:00 Friday Banter Intro 00:18 Meet Fiona 01:33 Rejected Conference Rebellion 03:04 Early Career Origins 05:44 Landing in Work Injury 07:03 Exercise Physiology in Workers Comp 08:42 Mic Drop Scope Beyond Exercise 10:42 Behaviour Change and Human Complexity 11:45 Wrap Up and Round Two   "Ten Minutes With" is brought to you by The Intelligent Rebellion and is a Threesticks Production. 2026/08/21
Find Denver Simonsz on Linkedin  | Substack In 2024, we recorded a conversation with Denver Simonsz on "The Intelligent Rebellion" podcast and to celebrate Denver's Substack we're revisiting his wisdom. This is a 10min version of Episode 32 of The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, Vanquishing Sunday Scaries with Denver Simonsz, a Registered Psychologist and board-approved supervisor. Want the full story? Check out the full Episode 032 In this The Intelligent Rebellion podcast episode, Rhea Mercado and Psychologist Denver Simonsz discuss burnout in healthcare and how work can creep into personal life, sparked by Denver’s blog about a “f**k it, I quit” moment. Denver describes overworking in a generally positive workplace, realizing he was near burnout when a coming holiday brought no relief and he could only think about returning to work, leading him to quit for his health and wellbeing. He advises noticing signs like persistent body tension, disturbed sleep, and reorganising life primarily to prepare for work, emphasising that self-care can’t offset poor pay, unreasonable caseloads, or bad treatment. Together Rhea and Denver discuss ideal systems with flexible, individualised client loads, supportive workplaces, and opportunities to mix roles across practices or sectors for longevity. Devon closes by telling new psychologists not to devalue the basics and to expect respectful treatment from the start. 00:00 Holiday Dread Opens Up 00:23 Healthcare Burnout Connection 00:57 The I Quit Moment 03:07 Sunday Night Doom Feeling 03:45 Burnout Signs To Catch 04:50 Self Care vs Work Creep 05:28 Designing A Better System 07:16 Flexible Careers Ahead 08:51 Holistic Multidisciplinary Care 09:50 Final Advice For New Psychs "Ten Minutes With" is brought to you by The Intelligent Rebellion and is a Threesticks Production. Warwick Brown Find Warwick: Linkedin | At Work OH& S Linkedin | At Work OH&S What is EMDR? A 10-Minute Breakdown with Psychologist Warwick In a short podcast chat,  Rhea speaks with Psychologist Warwick, who has 25 years’ experience and runs At Work OH&S, a business providing both rehab and treatment with a focus on trauma and pain management.  Warwick explains how he moved into trauma work through assisting pharmacies after hold-ups and later chronic pain work via rehab providers. The main discussion introduces Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR),  described as a gold-standard trauma treatment also used for pain, using bilateral stimulation to induce a REM-like state so the brain can process “target memories” without requiring retelling.  Warwick outlines identifying a target memory and negative belief, running stimulation in sets, checking client responses, and aiming to keep the memory while removing distress; he notes it can be highly effective for some clients but isn’t suitable for everyone, so clinicians trial tolerability and may use trauma-focused CBT instead. 00:00 Intro  00:42 Meet Warwick 01:27 Why Trauma Pain 02:31 What Is EMDR 04:06 How EMDR Works 06:08 Target Memories Setup 07:16 Rhea's Skepticism 08:22 Who It Helps 09:56 Wrap Up "Ten Minutes With" is brought to you by The Intelligent Rebellion and is a Threesticks Production.  Copyright (c) Threesticks Pty Ltd & Rhea Mercado (R) The team who produce the The Intelligent Rebellion Podcast, and Ten Minutes With Podcast acknowledge the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which the podcast is recorded.
