Ukrainian War: The African Toll
2022/03/26
Africans in Ukraine are complaining of racist treatment in their quest to escape the war, saying they are being blocked from boarding trains and prevented from crossing borders to neighboring countries for safety.
They are documenting their experiences on social media, posting and voicing videos from train stations and border points using the hashtag #AfricansinUkraine.
Anywhere from 300 to 1,000 African students are still in the country, activists say, and they continue to send videos asking for help. Some of them have nothing, not even passports.
In the West, the condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been swift and unequivocal. Many African states, on the other hand, have been reluctant to take sides in the conflict.
There have been many comments about Africans’ reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the horrific violence it has unleashed on Ukrainians and the humanitarian catastrophe it has created.
Many people have been aghast at what they see as the moral failure not just of African governments, but also of individual Africans, to outrightly condemn Russia for its clear and unwarranted aggression, as well as its imperial and colonial designs on another people’s land, with which they should be all too familiar.
Tune in to discuss with us!
ACWS: Reparations Part 1
2021/12/06
The views expressed in these episodes are those of the facilitators and the facilitators alone. They do not reflect any company or businesses.
Standing on an auction block in chains, an African man in good health could sell for over $1,200 in New Orleans in the decade before the US Civil War. A girl of nine or 10 could fetch $1,400 under the right market conditions. Pricing took into account a man’s strength or a girl’s ability to bear children for resale.
Approximately 12.5 million people were enslaved and taken from Africa, according to a widely accepted figure from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, but some estimates argue that as many as 20 million people were enslaved. So you do the math.
The cost of the human lives lost touches only part of the art, jewellers, money, and economic wealth stolen, and continues to be stolen from African nations by foreign “investors”.
In this episode we discuss what that means, and what we feel we’ve lost.

ACWS: Bride Pricing and Sugar Daddies
2021/11/25
How much do you cost? The question that many African women think about at one point or another. The original idea of a bride price/dowry was so a man could show his ability to care for his bride and also to show gratitude to the family for his wife, it has now turned into a bidding war making girls a commodity. We discuss the layers of it all.

ACWS: Unconscious Bias
2021/11/02
In this episode we discuss unconscious bias!
Unconscious bias (or implicit bias) is often defined as prejudice or unsupported judgments in favor of or against one thing, person, or group as compared to another, in a way that is usually considered unfair. ... As a result of unconscious biases, certain people benefit and other people are penalized.
There are many types of unconscious biases. Some of the most common are biases in how individuals regard their own thought processes and reasoning abilities, such as focusing on negative qualities of individuals that align with one’s existing attitudes — like in confirmation bias and affirmation bias.
