MADE IN THE YUKON | Yukon Brewing
2026/10/14
MADE IN THE YUKON is your deep dive into case studies of how Yukon makers have navigated the challenges of building things.
Your host is John Glynn-Morris, a Yukoner who's truly curious about the people who make the stuff that shapes how we live and who we are.
From successful businesses to renowned events, iconic brands to works of art, innovative ideas to essential infrastructure—if it's made in the Yukon, John digs for the story behind it.
In our very first episode, John has a conversation with the founders of Yukon Brewing, Bob Baxter and Al Hansen. They took a big chance and successfully built one of the Yukon’s flagship businesses. This is their story.

Presenting... Yukon Wildlife and Wildfire
2026/10/01
Our fall series will wrap up on October 14 with the story of how the Yukon Brewing Company was “made in the Yukon." In the meantime, we want to share an episode of a podcast that our former host, Karen McColl, recently produced in her position as a Wildlife Viewing Specialist with the Government of Yukon’s Wildlife Viewing Program.
In a five-part series called Yukon Wildlife and Wildfire, Karen and fellow naturalist Carrie McClelland guide listeners through several Yukon burns to explain how new life emerges in the aftermath of wildfire.
In our featured episode—“Takhini Bridge Fire: Hoo is there?”—Carrie and Karen head west of Whitehorse to explore what’s happening in one of the territory’s more recent and accessible post-fire landscapes.
You can listen and subscribe to Yukon Wildlife and Wildfire in your favourite podcast apps, including YouTube.

A Conversation with "Made in the Yukon" host John Glynn-Morris
2026/09/16
After much delay, The Yukon Magazine Podcast is almost ready to introduce a new feature that will be part of every series.
It’s called “Made in the Yukon.”
Four times a year, John Glynn-Morris will dive into the real stories of Yukon makers and how they navigate challenges, doubt and the quest for success. From flourishing businesses to renowned events, iconic brands to works of art, innovative ideas to essential infrastructure—if it’s made in the Yukon, John wants to share the story behind it.
Before we release the first episode—the incredible journey of the Yukon Brewing Company’s founders—we want to reveal more about John’s background, interests and perspectives on life in the Yukon. All of this comes out in a wide-ranging conversation between John and The Yukon Magazine’s co-publisher, Tammo Walter.
We hope you’ll be hearing a lot more from John as a trusted guide to the wonderful world of “Made in the Yukon.”

Is There a Hole on Your Bucket List?
2026/09/02
Do you live for epic paddling trips with no shortage of whitewater or opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing? If the answer is “Hell, yeah!” but you’ve never heard of the Yukon’s Firth River… well, there’s a hole on your bucket list.
In this repeat episode from July 2023, former host Karen McColl talks with writer Chris Carli about his life-altering experience paddling through a remote northern landscape with a huge population—of migratory caribou.
Hear how one remarkable encounter turned an avowed hiking-hater into a guy who will at least concede that a little hoofin’ it can offer spectacular rewards.

((Podcast)) by Pascale Halliday & Keith Halliday: mining the motherlore
2026/08/19
The Klondike Gold Rush History Podcast was a labour of love between two Yukoners who share a deep-rooted passion for local history. Produced by Pascale Halliday and her father, Keith, the 22-episode series guides listeners on an epic journey from the origins of the greatest gold rush the world has ever known to its apogee during Dawson City’s salad days of ’98. And, of course, they can’t get from one to the other without spending some nerve-wracking time on the Yukon River.
From an interview near the famed manes of the now-tamed White Horse Rapids, Pascale reflects on her personal connection to the gold rush and the family affair of the podcast’s production. Then she goes with the flow of our Fall issue’s current theme—rivers, rivers, rivers—by introducing our presentation of the episode “Bennett to Dawson in a leaky boat” from the Klondike Gold Rush History Podcast.

The Yukon Questionnaire w/ fish & wildlife enthusiast Dennis Zimmerman
2026/08/05
Rivers run through our fall series… and fish clearly run through Yukoner Dennis Zimmerman’s stream of consciousness.
“I can get kind of nerdy on fishing,” explains the self-described fish and wildlife enthusiast, who proves the point in our latest Yukon Questionnaire.
Dennis will hook you with a great story about Rock River—a place that many Yukoners are hard-pressed to even locate. He’ll reel you in with his close observations of local bumper stickers. And, finally, he’ll let you go with his thoughts about “The Spell of the Yukon.”
You'll definitely want to catch our podcast's latest release!

Fall 2026 | Rivers Run Through It
2026/07/23
The YUKON Magazine co-publisher Tammo Walter kicks off a new season of the podcast with some reflections on his recent rookie experience in the Kluane-to-Chilkat International Bike Relay. Then he shifts gears to highlight another staple event of the waning Yukon summer, the Paradise Music Festival. As usual, he’s joined by editor-in-chief Kanina Holmes to discuss the upcoming Fall issue of the magazine, which has a special theme that’s also reflected in this podcast series. Finally, Tammo shares a few clips from the episodes coming your way over the next three months.

((Non-Fiction)) by Eva Holland: writing the North
2026/07/09
Now the author of two books and many articles in major publications, Eva Holland was just getting started in 2012. That’s when she was offered a 10-month back-fill position with Up Here magazine. “It was the break I was waiting for,” she says, “and I spent those months in an informal feature-writing boot-camp.”
In this episode, Eva chats with The YUKON Magazine’s co-publisher, Tammo Walter, about her evolution as a northern writer and what it means to “write the North.” She then reads a timeless story titled “I Found the Sweet Life,” which chronicles a week she spent among Skagway’s seasonal workers during her “boot-camp” era more than a decade ago. Originally published in Up Here, this piece also appears in Eva’s collection No Sleep ‘Til Fairbanks.
"This story,” she explains, “was my first foray into the sort of immersive first-person reporting that would become my trademark.”
The rest is history.

Have Fun—Will Gravel
2026/06/10
Gravel biking may feel like a relatively new corner of cycling, but in many ways it brings the sport back to where it started: rough roads, mixed surfaces, long distances, and a little uncertainty about what comes next.
With the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay coming up on June 20th, from Haines Junction to Haines, cycling is very much on our radar. And while KCIBR is not a gravel ride, the Yukon has more than enough rough roads, back roads, construction zones, and in-between terrain to make a gravel bike feel right at home.
In this conversation from our archive, originally released in 2022, then-host Karen McColl speaks with Ian Parker about the rise of gravel biking , or, as he calls it, mixed-surface riding. They talk about why the Yukon is such a natural place for it, how gravel sits somewhere between road cycling and mountain biking, and why the best bike might simply be the one that gets you out there.
A timely look back at a cycling movement that keeps gaining ground.

5,200 Kilometres by Snowmobile Across Mountains, Whiteouts and Sea Ice
2026/05/27
In temperatures below -50°C and help not available or far away everything matters. A lot.
As part of Operation Nanook-Nunalivut 2026, a team of Canadian Rangers crossed more than 5,200 kilometres of Arctic wilderness by snowmobile. For 52 days they traveled along parts of the Northwest Passage where weather, equipment failure or one wrong decision can quickly into a very serious situation.
Three Yukon Rangers, Maya Poirier, Philippe Brient and Dan Beaudoin, reflect on the longest Arctic patrol ever conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces. They talk about navigating in whiteout conditions, setting up tents, constant dangers, arriving in remote northern communities, and what surprised them most traveling for an extended period of time in extreme conditions.
A conversation about endurance, teamwork, survival, and a part of Canada most people know little about and will never experience firsthand.
All statements and opinions expressed in this episode are the personal views of the individuals involved and do not represent the official positions of the Canadian Armed Forces or the Canadian Rangers.

The Yukon Questionnaire w/ "Yukonomist" Keith Halliday
2026/05/13
Asking questions is something familiar to Keith Halliday. A longtime journalist, author, consultant and close observer of the North, Keith has spent decades asking tough questions and making sense of Yukon life. But that doesn’t necessarily make the hot seat any easier. In this episode, Keith turns reflective, opinionated, and occasionally unexpected as he weighs in on the Yukon's most pressing questions, from the practical to the philosophical, in a conversation shaped by deep roots, wit, and a lifetime of paying attention.

River Breakup Season, Between Freeze and Flood
2026/04/15
Each spring, northern rivers go from solid ice to flowing water. In the best-case scenario this process goes smoothly but if ice jams form, there can be trouble. We first ran this conversation with Holly Goulding, senior hydrologist with the Government of Yukon, in February 2023. Given the winter the territory just came through, it felt like the right time to bring it back. Goulding breaks down how ice, water, snow, and temperature combine to create the perfect melt or the perfect flood.

Time is Tissue: Racing the Clock Against Frostbite
2026/04/01
First it hurts. Then it stops. That’s when the clock starts ticking.
With frostbite, time matters. It can mean the difference between recovery and loss. From Whitehorse, Yukon, surgeon Alex Poole and clinical pharmacist Josianne Gauthier share what they’ve learned treating and studying frostbite and how they pioneered the current gold-standard treatment protocol. They talk us through what’s happening beneath the skin's surface, what decisions are critical, and the fine margins that determine whether tissue survives.
A closer look at a condition shaped as much by time as by temperature.
