Just before New Year’s Eve in 2000, the Miyazawa family from Setagaya, Japan were preparing for a new start into the year 2001. They were excited that in the new year, they could finally move homes and start afresh but none of that happened in the end. Instead, what happened to the Miyazawa would soon become one of Japan’s long standing mysteries that to this very day is still being investigated by the police and obsessed over by web sleuths. Malcolm Caldwell existed in a time when communism was frowned upon in the West. But he did not mind. He spent most of his life and his academic career, writing about his admiration and support of communism, especially the communist revolution in Southeast Asia. He admired Kim Il-Sung and Pol Pot. Junko’s case is one that will be told over and over again not necessarily because the harrowing details of her last 44 days are interesting. The details are horrifying and nightmare-inducing, in fact. I think the reason we come back to Junko’s case a lot of times is because we can see pure evil unfolding and destroying a life so full of light and potential just because the perpetrators lacked humanity and empathy so much that some did not even consider them humans anymore. As a woman, I also see how Junko’s case, an extreme case of femicide, demonstrates yet again that a woman saying NO is not necessarily a safe woman. Junko dared to say NO to a bully and paid for it with her life. May this serve as a reminder that women trying to get away from violent situations and relationships cannot always simply do so without wider repercussions. On the 6th January 1979, the peace and quiet of Block 58 in Geylang Bahru was shattered as parents Lee Mei Ying and Tan Kuen Chai discovered a most awful scene in their apartment. This case would become one of the most compelling criminal cases in Singapore, a country that in the late 70s was still trying to establish itself after obtaining independence a decade earlier. To this very day, the Geylang Bahru Murders remain one of the longest running cold cases of the country. Iraq and Iran of the early 1900s were going through some seismic changes not only in realising their eventual independence from the Ottoman Empire but in establishing their position in the world. On a seemingly normal day in February 1982, construction workers working near the Shing Mun River in Hongkong happened upon a horrible discovery. It was a woman’s head. This discovery kicked off a six-month investigation that led the police to a man with a mind like no other.
