We did this interview in Berlin in 2004, after his short foray in commercial cinema with No Such Thing, but before Fay Grim and Ned Rifle. It’s the first time this interview has been published in English.

William T. Vollmann on Courage and Betrayal
2021/11/15
This month is one year since I’ve been on Substack, but it’s only my sixth post here. From now on I’m going to publish an interview a month.
At first, it’ll be old interviews with American, British and Canadian writers and movie directors I took in the 2000s for Russian media and never published in English. I have in my stock interviews with Cory Doctorow, David Cronenberg and others. After the old interviews will have been published, there will be new ones. This interview with William T. Vollmann was taken in 2006. A part of it was published in Kiev magazine SHO in Russian, but it’s the first time this interview is published in English.

Aric Toler on Practicing OSINT
2021/06/04
Here’s an interview with Aric Toler of Bellingcat that I took in June 2017. Parts of it were broadcast by Radio Svoboda (in Russian). It has never been published in English.
You’ll learn how a student of Russian language can get an unlikely job in Merrill Lynch and then become a leading Open Source Intelligence specialist, how Bellingcat is run and financed, and how two self-employed guys managed to beat the leading intelligence agencies of the world in finding the people who downed Boeing MH17 over Ukraine.
Sorry for the background noise, we talked in a pub that was almost empty when we started but became quite crowded in the course of the conversation.

David Foster Wallace on Art and Truth
2021/05/07
The sound quality and my English are suboptimal, but don’t judge too harshly: it was 2006 when both me and technology were much younger and less sophisticated.
