King's Cross: The Match That Started a Fire
2026/09/12
At 7:30 PM on November 18, 1987, a passenger on the Piccadilly line escalator at King's Cross noticed a small fire on the wooden treads. It was reported at the ticket office. For roughly fifteen minutes, the fire remained small. Then, at 7:45 PM, a previously unrecognised phenomenon called the 'trench effect' caused flames to race upward through the escalator shaft, erupting into a devastating flashover. Thirty-one people lost their lives, including Station Officer Colin Townsley, who died while helping a passenger to safety. The official investigation led by Desmond Fennell QC concluded the fire was started by a single discarded match. Produced by HustleStudios Podcast Network. Narrated with an approved synthetic voice. This episode describes real events involving loss of life. The Last Signal is researched and written with AI assistance and narrated with a synthetic voice, then reviewed by HustleStudios.
