S3, Ep : 62. Federico Garcia Lorca, La Bola Negra, and Spain’s Buried Truth
2026/10/21
Have you ever wondered what happens when a society decides that someone is simply not allowed to be who they are? Not because they have hurt anybody, not because they have done anything wrong, but because they are different from what society expects them to be.
Well, my friends, today on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are talking about a man whose words have survived almost a century of silence, fear and injustice. A man who could make you feel the deepest sorrow with a poem, laugh through a play, or look at the world in a completely different way.
His name was Federico García Lorca.
Born in Andalusia in 1898, Lorca became one of Spain's greatest poets and playwrights. His writing was full of passion, music, love, freedom and that unmistakable Andalusian soul. But behind the beauty of his words was a man living in a country where being openly different could come at a terrible price.
Lorca was gay, a brilliant artist, and a man whose personal life and progressive ideas made him vulnerable in an increasingly divided Spain. In August 1936, just weeks after the Spanish Civil War began, he was arrested and assassinated. His exact burial place remains unknown.
And honestly, when you think about it, there is something profoundly heart breaking about a country losing one of its greatest literary voices to hatred and political violence.
But here's where the story takes an extraordinary turn.
Almost ninety years later, a film called “La bola Negra”, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, has brought Lorca's unfinished work back into the spotlight. Spain has selected it as its entry for the 2027 Academy Awards, and the film has already collected major international festival awards.
The story explores what it means to be rejected by society, to have a kind of invisible black ball cast against your name simply because of who you are.
And that, my friends, is what makes this story so powerful. We are not just talking about something that happened in Spain in the 1930s. We are talking about belonging, identity, prejudice and the price people have paid for being themselves.
So, come and join Fran and me as we remember Federico García Lorca, celebrate his extraordinary talent, and talk about why his voice still matters today.
Because some stories are never truly finished. And some voices refuse to disappear.

S3, Ep : 61. Spain’s Black Legend: History, Propaganda and Legacy
2026/10/14
Hello, Loopers! Lovely to be back with you for another episode of Spanish Loops.
This week, we’re talking about something that has followed Spain around for centuries: the Black Legend. And believe me, there’s quite a story behind it!
Spain was once one of the most powerful empires in the world, with kings who ruled vast territories, armies fighting across Europe, and ships crossing oceans in search of wealth and new lands. But while the Spanish Crown was building its empire, its enemies were busy building a very different image of Spain.
Let’s start with the Trastámaras, move on to the Habsburgs, and then bring in the Bourbons. Add the Crown of Castile, the Dutch fighting for independence, the English looking to challenge Spanish power, and a fair amount of religious and political rivalry. Suddenly, you have all the ingredients for a story that goes well beyond kings, queens and battles.
Because here’s the interesting part: how much of what the world came to believe about Spain was based on real events, and how much was shaped by those who had their own reasons for making Spain look bad?
Of course, Spain's imperial past had its darker side. There were conquests, persecution, violence and terrible suffering, particularly in the Americas. We’re not here to pretend otherwise. But other European powers had empires of their own, and their records deserve the same honest scrutiny.
So, why did Spain acquire such a powerful reputation, who helped spread it, and why do some of those old stories still influence the way people see the country today? And perhaps just as interesting, how does the story change when you look at it from Spain, Britain, the Netherlands or somewhere else entirely?
That’s what Fran and I are getting into this week. A little royal drama, a little international rivalry, plenty of history, and a few things that might make you look at familiar stories rather differently.
So, make yourself comfortable, join us for another Spanish Loops, and let’s have a proper conversation about Spain’s Black Legend.
And as always, thanks for being part of our little community of Loopers. You know we love having you here!

S3, Ep : 60. Talaiotic Culture. The unknown Menorca Island.
2026/10/07
Hello there, Loopers! Welcome back to another episode of Spanish Loops.
This week, we are heading to a very special corner of Spain: the island of Menorca. And we are going back thousands of years, long before Romans, Moors, or even the first written history of the Balearic Islands.
We are talking about the Talaiotic culture.
Now, if you have ever visited Menorca, you may have come across some rather strange stone constructions scattered across the landscape. Towers, enormous stone walls, underground spaces, and those wonderful taulas, two huge slabs of stone carefully placed to form something that looks almost like a giant stone table.
And this is where things get really interesting.
The Talaiotic culture developed in the Balearic Islands during prehistoric times, but Menorca became something truly extraordinary.
The island is covered with hundreds of archaeological sites, many of them remarkably well preserved. You can literally walk through landscapes where people were building these structures more than three thousand years ago.
But why?
That is the big mystery.
We know quite a lot about the people who lived here. We know they had communities, animals, agriculture, traditions and their own ways of building. But when it comes to the exact purpose of some of these monuments, things become much less clear.
Were the talaiots defensive towers? Meeting places? Symbols of power? Religious spaces? And what exactly happened around those mysterious taulas?
Well… archaeologists have theories, but there is still plenty we simply don't know.
And perhaps that is part of the magic.
Menorca has preserved these stones through centuries of wind, rain, changing civilizations and modern life. They are not sitting behind glass in a museum. They are out there, in the countryside, surrounded by the same Mediterranean landscape that prehistoric islanders knew.
So this week, Loopers, let's travel back beyond written history and into a Menorca of stones, mystery and ancient communities.
Because sometimes, the oldest stories are the ones that still have the most secrets.

S3, EP : 59. Ronda: Where History Meets the Andalusian Sky
2026/09/24
Hello, Loopers, and welcome back to Spanish Loops!
This week, Fran and I are taking you to a place that, for me, is impossible to forget: Ronda, in the mountains of Málaga, one of those Spanish places where history, landscape and everyday life seem to have decided to live together.
Perched above the spectacular Tajo de Ronda, with its famous Puente Nuevo crossing the gorge, Ronda is much more than a beautiful photograph. It is a town with layers upon layers of history. Its story reaches back to prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of human settlement going back to the Neolithic, while nearby caves preserve much older traces of human presence. Later came the Romans, with Acinipo, then centuries of Islamic history, the Kingdom of Granada, the Christian conquest, and eventually the romantic image of Ronda that fascinated nineteenth-century travellers.
And you can still feel all of that when you walk through the town.
There are ancient walls, Arab baths, palaces, churches, narrow streets, magnificent viewpoints and, of course, that extraordinary bridge suspended above the gorge. But what I particularly love about Ronda is that it never feels like a museum. It is a living Andalusian town, surrounded by the Serranía de Ronda, with its traditions, food, wine, stories and very strong personality.
In this episode, Fran and I take you through some of the history, characters and places that have helped make Ronda one of the most fascinating destinations in southern Spain. And, as always, we will try to look beyond the postcard and get a little closer to the real Spain behind it.
And stay with us right until the very end, because we have a little surprise waiting for you before we say goodbye. Nothing complicated… but I think you’re going to enjoy it!
So, get comfortable, Loopers. We’re heading inland from Málaga, into the mountains, and straight into the heart of one of Andalusia’s most extraordinary towns.
This is Ronda.
And this is Spanish Loops.
S3, Ep : 58. The Delicious Flavours and Stories of Balearic Island Gastronomy
2026/09/19
What happens when you put four Mediterranean islands, centuries of history, the sea, the countryside, and some seriously good cooks around the same table?
You get Balearic gastronomy!
This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are taking you to Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera to discover the food that makes these islands so much more than beautiful beaches and turquoise water.
And believe me, there is plenty to talk about.
From the famous Mallorcan ensaimada and sobrasada to Menorca’s wonderful Mahón cheese, from seafood and traditional island stews to the distinctive flavours of Ibiza and Formentera, every island has its own personality on the plate.
What I particularly love about Balearic cooking is that it tells a story. Centuries of Mediterranean influences, island isolation, local farming, fishing, and the simple need to make the most of what was available have all shaped these recipes.
And then there are the variations! Because, as we always say on Spanish Loops, Spain can never agree to make just one version of anything!
So, come hungry, Loopers. This week we're sitting down at the Balearic table to discover some of the most delicious food Spain has to offer.
And yes… there may be an ensaimada involved.
S3, Ep : 57. How Spain Gives Retirees Holidays Worth Taking
2026/09/09
Have you ever wondered what happens when a country decides that retirement should come with a little sunshine, a nice hotel, and a holiday?
Well… Spain has an answer for that.
It’s called Imserso, and if you’re visiting Spain and suddenly notice thousands of Spanish retirees heading to the coast in the middle of winter, there’s a very good chance they’re on an Imserso holiday.
And honestly, it’s one of those wonderfully Spanish things that deserves a little explanation.
The idea began back in 1978, originally as a way of giving older people, particularly those who lived alone, the opportunity to enjoy holidays and social activities. But there was another clever idea behind it: keeping hotels, restaurants, transport companies and other tourism businesses working during Spain’s quieter months.
Fast-forward forty years, and the programme has become a remarkably large operation.
For the 2026–27 season, almost 880,000 places are being offered, covering Spain’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, the Balearic and Canary Islands, cultural circuits, nature trips, provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla.
And here’s the part that might make you raise an eyebrow.
A nine-night coastal holiday can start at around €309, including accommodation, full board and transport in many cases. There’s even a specially reserved group of places costing just €50 for people with particularly limited financial resources.
So who can actually go? What are the requirements? How does Spain decide who gets a place? Who pays for it? And why does the government consider holidays part of something as serious as healthy ageing?
This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are taking a closer look at Imserso, the Spanish holiday programme that manages to combine retirement, tourism, social policy and a surprisingly good deal.
So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and let me tell you about one of Spain’s most curious traditions.
Because retirement in Spain apparently comes with one very important rule:
You’re not supposed to stop enjoying yourself.
S3, Ep : 56. Granada’s Royal Chapel: Where Spain’s History Rests
2026/09/02
There’s a place in Granada where history doesn’t simply sit behind glass or on the pages of a textbook. It’s right there, in front of you and carved into stone, painted on walls, buried beneath the floor, and wrapped up in one of the most fascinating stories of Spain.
The Royal Chapel of Granada is the final resting place of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Catholic Monarchs. And yet, their decision to be buried here was not quite as straightforward as you might imagine.
Originally, Toledo had been chosen as their burial place. So why Granada?
Fran and I take you inside the Royal Chapel to unravel that story, from the final years of the Reconquest and the fall of Granada to the journey their remains made before reaching the magnificent chapel you can visit today.
And then there’s the building itself.
The Royal Chapel is a wonderful little lesson in the transition from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance. Look closely and you’ll find symbols, religious imagery, royal propaganda, sculpture, architecture and artwork all telling part of the story. It’s almost like walking through a visual Wikipedia of Renaissance Spain, except, thankfully, there’s no loading screen.
This is also one of those places that makes you understand Granada a little differently. The Alhambra tells one part of the story. The Royal Chapel tells another: the story of the Christian monarchy, its ambitions, its faith, and the enormous political changes taking place at the end of the 15th century.
And yes, Jorge includes a visit to the Royal Chapel in The Essence of Southern Spain tour, because some places are simply too important to experience through a guidebook.
So this week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are opening the doors and taking you inside one of Granada’s most remarkable landmarks.
History is waiting downstairs. And it has quite a story to tell.
S3, Ep : 55. The Spanish Dollar: The Coin That Ruled Global Trade
2026/08/26
You know what I love about history? Sometimes you discover something that makes you think, “Wait… how did I never know this?”
So, imagine we’re having a beer together, and I tell you this:
The mighty American dollar has a Spanish ancestor.
Yep. Seriously.
Long before the dollar became the currency we all know today, there was a Spanish coin called the Real de a Ocho, the famous Piece of Eight.
And this little piece of silver was everywhere.
It was minted in the Spanish Empire, using enormous quantities of silver coming from the Americas, and people were using it to buy and sell things across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
In fact, it became one of the first truly international currencies.
And here's the fun part: when people didn't have exactly the amount they needed, they could literally cut the coin into pieces. That's where the famous “pieces of eight” comes from.
But this isn't just some curious story about an old Spanish coin.
That Spanish silver helped inspire the U.S. dollar, and there are even traces of the Piece of Eight in the way American financial markets once quoted prices in eighths.
And then things get even more interesting.
Because behind this coin is the enormous financial machine of the Spanish Empire, the Habsburgs, the Bourbons, American silver mines, international trade… and eventually the financial world that would lead us toward modern currencies and markets.
So, next time somebody tells you that the dollar is purely an American story, you might want to buy them another beer.
Because there's a very Spanish story hiding behind it.
And that's exactly the kind of forgotten story we love telling here on Spanish Loops.

S3, Ep : 54. From Guide Dogs to Bulls: Animals in Spain
2026/08/22
This week on Spanish Loops, we’re talking about animals in Spain and, yes, there is a lot more to this story than cute dogs and cats.
Spain has changed dramatically in the way it treats animals. What was once seen mainly as a matter of private ownership is now increasingly connected to welfare, responsibility and the law.
Today, there are rules about what animals can be kept as pets, how they can be bought or sold, how they must be cared for, and what happens when an animal needs special protection.
We talk about dogs, including the extraordinary work of assistance dogs trained to support blind people and people with other disabilities.
These are not simply “pets with a job”: Spanish regulations now specifically recognize assistance dogs and establish standards for their training, identification and welfare.
And then there is the complicated question: what animals are you actually allowed to have at home?
The answer is not as simple as you might think. Spain has introduced a “positive list” approach, meaning that not every exotic or wild animal can simply become somebody’s pet. There are also increasingly strict rules surrounding the commercial sale and transfer of companion animals.
And, of course, sitting in the middle of the room is the big elephant… or perhaps we should say bull.
Bullfighting.
Fran and I have already dedicated an entire episode to this controversial Spanish tradition, so we are not going down that road again. But we do touch on the contradiction: Spain has strengthened animal-welfare legislation while bullfighting and certain traditional bull-related events remain governed separately.
It is history, culture, politics, affection for animals, personal freedom and regulation all colliding in one Spanish conversation.
If you’re an animal lover, this week’s Spanish Loops has something for you. Join us and let’s take a closer look together.
Press play. We’ve got a few things to sniff out.

S3 : Ep 53. Hey!, Come closer… Let’s Talk About the Spanish Royals
2026/08/12
Okay… come a little closer. I have something to tell you.
Well… actually, you probably already know most of it. But somehow, when we talk about the Spanish Royal Family, there is always another little detail, another story, another “Did you hear about this?”
In this episode of Spanish Loops, we’re doing exactly that: sitting down for a good old-fashioned chat about the gossip, scandals, marriages, money, divorces and family dramas behind the Spanish Crown.
We’ll go back to the stories that had Spain talking... and then bring it right up to today.
There’s King Juan Carlos, the former king who now lives in Abu Dhabi, far away from Spain, surrounded by his own controversies… and, of course, the fascinating and sometimes complicated stories involving his family and the younger generations.
Then there are the Infantas, their glamorous weddings, their marriages, their very public divorces and everything that happened afterwards. Add a few money scandals, family disagreements, royal romances and plenty of things that were probably never meant to become public…
Well… you get the picture.
And what about Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía? What does it mean to grow up knowing that almost everything your family does can become tomorrow’s headline?
So forget the official photographs for a moment.
Forget the ceremonies.
Come and sit with us.
Because this isn't really a history lesson.
S3, Ep : 52. Best Souvenirs to Buy in Spain.
2026/08/05
Not every souvenir from Spain deserves a place in your suitcase.
Let's be honest. We've all seen the flamenco dolls with plastic smiles, the tiny black bulls, and the endless rows of magnets waiting in airport shops.
They're part of the experience, and they often bring a smile years later. But Spain has so much more to take home than the usual tourist classics.
In this week's episode of Spanish Loops, we're talking about the souvenirs that truly capture the spirit of Spain. The ones that tell a story long after your journey is over.
Spanish food is one of the greatest gifts you can bring back. A carefully selected Manchego or Cabrales cheese, properly vacuum sealed, can transport you right back to that village market or family-owned delicatessen where you first tasted it.
A box of traditional turrón, Spain's famous almond nougat enjoyed for centuries, makes every holiday season a little sweeter.
Then there are the wines. From Rioja and Ribera del Duero to lesser-known regions producing exceptional bottles, Spain offers remarkable quality without the extravagant prices found elsewhere.
For those looking for something timeless, Lladró porcelain figures remain an icon of Spanish craftsmanship.
While they may not be as fashionable as they were decades ago, their elegance, artistry, and attention to detail continue to make them treasured collectibles around the world.
The best souvenirs aren't always the most expensive or the easiest to find. They're the ones that remind you of a conversation with a local shop owner, a hidden market, or a quiet afternoon discovering a corner of Spain that wasn't on any itinerary.
Travel isn't measured by what you pack. It's measured by the memories you carry home. Sometimes, those memories happen to fit perfectly inside a suitcase.
Join us this week on Spanish Loops as we explore the souvenirs worth bringing home from Spain and why the best keepsakes are often the ones with the richest stories behind them.
Subscribe and share. Your friends will love it!

S3, Ep : 51. Spain's Healthcare & Pension System: The Complete Story.
2026/07/29
What Happens After Payday in Spain? You May Be Surprised.
Have you ever stopped to think about where all those deductions on a Spanish pay check actually go?
Most people see the numbers, sigh a little... and move on.
But behind those deductions is a system that's been protecting millions of people for well over a century. And unless you've actually lived in Spain, chances are you've only seen the surface. People ask me this on tour all the time.
This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I thought we'd tackle one of those subjects that sounds a bit dry... until you realize it affects almost every single person who lives here.
We're talking about Spain's Social Security system.
Where did it begin? Why was it created? Who pays for it? And what do you actually get in return?
We're going to walk you through the story, from the first protections for workers back in the late nineteenth century to the universal healthcare system Spain has today.
We'll explain how family doctors, hospitals, maternity leave, sick leave, unemployment benefits and retirement pensions are all connected in ways that many people never realize.
One thing that often surprises visitors is that healthcare here isn't simply a public service. It's considered a right, and that idea has shaped Spanish society for decades.
Curious about how the country looks after its citizens? This episode will answer a lot of questions you've probably never thought to ask.
As always, we're leaving the politics outside the studio.
This isn't about opinions.
It's about understanding how one of Spain's biggest institutions really works... and why it matters to every worker from the very first day they start paying into the system.
So grab a coffee, come and join us. I think you'll look at Spain a little differently by the end of this episode.

S3, Ep : 50. Pirates, Corsairs, and Buccaneers: The untold war that built empires.

Have you ever wondered what the real difference is between a pirate, a corsair, and a buccaneer? Most of us use those words as if they all mean the same thing... but they really don't.
This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I had a great time untangling one of the most fascinating chapters of history.
We talk about who these men really were, who paid them, what they were after, and why Spain's ships crossing the Atlantic became some of the most valuable (and dangerous) targets on Earth.
It turns out the story isn't simply about buried treasure, eye patches, and walking the plank. Behind every attack was money, politics, and a fierce struggle for control of the riches flowing between the Americas and Europe.
Some sailed under a king's blessing, others answered to no one but themselves, and more than once the same man could be considered a hero... or a criminal... depending on which country was telling the story.
We'll also explain how the discovery of the New World transformed international trade forever and why the Caribbean became the center stage for one of history's greatest maritime rivalries.
It's an episode full of surprising stories, incredible characters, and plenty of myths that deserve to be busted.
Curious about the people who ruled the seas and why they mattered far more than Hollywood usually tells us?, you'll definitely enjoy this one.
Come aboard, and join us for another adventure on Spanish Loops.
S3, Ep : 49. The River That Changed Madrid Forever.
2026/07/15
What if I told you that the story that changed Madrid forever isn't about kings, battles, or royal palaces... it's about water?
Sounds strange, doesn't it?
This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I tell the incredible story of Canal de Isabel II, the project that finally brought clean water to Madrid and changed the city in ways most people never imagine.
But this episode isn't really about a canal.
It's about why water has always been such a big deal in Spain. We often think of Spain as a country surrounded by the sea, yet much of it is surprisingly dry.
That simple fact has shaped its history for thousands of years. The Romans built spectacular aqueducts, the Moors created ingenious irrigation systems, and centuries later engineers took on the enormous challenge of supplying water to a fast-growing capital that, believe it or not, doesn't sit on a major river.
So why was Madrid chosen as Spain's capital in the first place? How did millions of people end up living in a city with so little natural water? And how did Canal de Isabel II become one of the most important public works in Spanish history?
As always, we leave the dry history books behind. Instead, we share the stories, the unexpected twists, and the little details that make Spain such a fascinating country to understand.
Grab a coffee, settle in, and join us on Spanish Loops.
You might never look at a glass of water inMadrid the same way again.
S3, Ep: 48. The Forgotten Spanish Genius Behind Every Modern Space Suit.
2026/07/08
Hola Chicos!
Have you ever stopped to think about what Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, NASA... and Spain all have in common?
Most people would probably say, "Nothing."
Well... that's exactly what we thought too.
But what if we told you that one of the key inventions that made modern space travel possible wasn't created in the United States, or Russia, (former USSR), or anywhere you'd expect... but in Spain?
Yes, you read well, Spain.
Years before the Space Race even existed, before the Cold War pushed countries to compete for space, and nearly thirtyyears before anyone dreamed of walking on the Moon, one Spanish inventor came up with an idea that sounded completely impossible at the time: a suit that could keep a person alive beyond Earth's atmosphere.
It sounds like something straight out of a science fiction novel.
Except... it was real. Very.
In this week's episode of Spanish Loops, Fran and I tell the story of a remarkable man who was so far ahead of his time that Europe celebrated his achievements, yet somehow history almost forgot him.
How does that happen?
How can someone make such an incredible contribution and still end up being almost unknown?
That's exactly what we're going to find out.
We'll take you through his life, his career, the obstacles he faced, and some amazing stories that hardly anyone talks about today.
It's the kind of story that makes you wonder how many other great people have quietly slipped through the cracks of history.
And here's the really fascinating part...
If you've ever watched astronauts floating outside the International Space Station, seen a SpaceX rocket lift off, followed one of Blue Origin's launches, or simply looked up at the stars and wondered what it would be like to be there, then you've already seen the impact of this Spanish inventor's work, even if you've never heard his name.
So come with us as we uncover one of Spain's greatest forgotten stories.
If you enjoy the episode, we'd really appreciate it if you subscribed, left us a review, and shared it with yourfriends and family. It really helps us bring these hidden stories to more people.
And don't be surprised if by the end of the episode, you're left asking yourself one simple question:
Why on earth were we never taught this at school?
