Description

Welcome to *Vet Physio Research Rewind* — where I take a look back at the research I’ve done in veterinary physiotherapy, unpack the methods and motivations behind it, and chat about how it fits into the bigger picture. It's part reflection, part critique, and part storytelling, all aimed at making sense of where we’ve been and where we’re heading in the world of vet physio.

Multifidus Part 2!
2025/07/23
Do dynamic mobilisation exercises - aka carrot stretches - do anything above general training? I wasn't put off research during my MSc so I went back to uni and completed a Masters in Research (ResM) to find out.
Multifidus - yes that muscle and my study in 2001
2025/07/16
Settle in - I am going to tell you a story about a very fashionable muscle! Thirty years later we still care about this little stabiliser. I made the common mistake of thinking I could study core stability training - but how was I going to measure the effect of the exercises? And I still on the pathway to measure things ;-)
Where it all started - my Undergrad dissertation
2025/07/09
A long time ago, my first research project was on veterinary surgeon's perception of animal physiotherapy. Listen as I tell you the story of why and how I conducted this study, and about my first research presentation!
Vet Physio Research Rewind - My new podcast direction!
2025/07/01
I'm back! It's been a little while but I have new plans! In *Vet Physio Research Rewind*, I revisit the research I’ve done in equine and canine physio, explore the stories and reasoning behind it, and connect the dots with other studies in the field. Whether you're in practice or teaching, this podcast offers a reflective and practical take on how research informs what we do day to day.
Motivation, energy and flow
2023/01/18
Can we provide animals with the same access to a sense of enjoyment that we as humans value so much? - Hintze & Yee (2022) If we are looking to rehab and train and thus improve performance we need the horse to be working at an intensity that stimulates adaptation. So what if the horse could be happy to increase effort and be in a 'flow state' whilst they do it? I don't know the answers but wanted to share a few thoughts about my recent exploration into the human psychological theories of motivation! Ref for the paper I mentioned: Hintze, S. and Yee, J.R., 2021. Animals in flow–Towards the scientific study of intrinsic reward in animals. Biological Reviews. For Self-determination theory look up Ryan and Deci's model.
Symmetry and Straightness

Rewarding Rehab
2022/10/15
In this episode I talk about why I think adding positive reinforcement to conventional training is the way forward! Check out my social media to see me and my horse in action - www.facebook.com/drgilliantaborphysio & www.instagram.com/drgilliantaborphysio
Sympathetic Nervous System - Friend or Foe?
2022/09/28
What is the autonomic nervous system and how does it effect our horses?  In this podcast I talk about the flight and fight, rest and digest elements of horse behaviour and ask the question - is the being in a high arousal state always a concern? Can it be beneficial in rehab and training. I have a lot to learn about the topic of motivation and ideas such as flow state, and how they can be applied to horses but I think there is so much that can translated. What do you think?
Exploring movement in Rehab and Training
2022/09/21
My thoughts on using a wide range of movement and movement options during rehab and training

Conferences and Camps 2022 Part 1

Something a little different!  Reflection and chat about some amazing opportunities and experiences I have had over the last couple of months.
Before the big occasion
2022/05/20
What should you do in the week or days before a big event. The big event may be the olympics but it may also be a clinic you travel to or a pleasure ride. What ever it may be it usually represents an increase effort compared to your horse's normal day to day level of activity. In this podcast I talk about ways to ensure you are ready for the event, you have the greatest level of performance there and you do not increase the risk of injury for your horse. How hard to train and rehab - 'reps in reserve'
2022/05/06
We know that to progress and adapt the musculoskeletal system the body has to work a bit harder. But how hard and how do you know if you are working your horse too hard or not hard enough? In this podcast I talk about the concepts of working to failure and working with 2 reps in reserve.
