A breast cancer diagnosis can change your life in ways you never imagined but sometimes those changes can lead you somewhere quite extraordinary. This week on my Good Things with Brent Lindeque podcast, I chatted to Aileen Lamb, the former CEO of New Media, who was diagnosed with breast cancer on Women's Day, at exactly the same age her own mother had been diagnosed. Thankfully, her cancer was detected early but the experience made her reassess her life and ask herself one important question... "If not now, when?" And that question changed everything. Aileen decided to pursue a dream she'd carried for years, immersing herself in the world of perfumery and eventually launching Heirloom Perfumery, a proudly South African fragrance brand. And she's giving back too, with 5 percent of online sales going to Project Flamingo, which supports women receiving breast cancer treatment in public hospitals. This conversation was incredibly meaningful for me as my own mom has just finished radiation treatment for breast cancer, and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it felt like an important story to share. We also spoke about finding your ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning your reason for being, and how even the scariest experiences can sometimes push us towards a new purpose. What I loved most is that Aileen's story isn't really about cancer. It's about everything that can still happen afterwards and the wonderful possibilities waiting for us when we decide to follow our dreams. Rory Steyn had one of the most extraordinary jobs in South African history: protecting Nelson Mandela. Appointed to lead Madiba’s personal protection team in 1996, Rory travelled with him locally and internationally, getting to know the man behind the global icon and witnessing moments most South Africans never got to see. What if we were all just a little more careful with each other, a little more thoughtful with our words and a little quicker to check in on someone who might need us? That is the message behind KY-ND, an initiative created by Jen Rowe in honour of her son, Ky, who died by suicide in August 2022. Jen wanted to keep Ky’s kindness moving through the world, and it started with something incredibly simple: a bench at his school. The idea is that if you see someone sitting there alone, you sit next to them and just be there. Since then, KY-ND has grown into a community, with benches, T-shirts that start conversations and more than R55,000 raised for Operation Smile South Africa. Jen joined me on this week’s Good Things with Brent Lindeque poddie to talk about Ky, grief, love and why our words and actions matter more than we may ever realise. South Africa’s next Olympic champion could be sitting in a rural classroom right now, with no athletics track, no equipment and no idea how talented they actually are. Former Olympian and World Champion Matthew Quinn is trying to change that through Track+Field, a programme taking athletics into schools across all nine provinces and giving young South Africans the opportunity to compete. One of those youngsters is Thabo, who attended a school without an athletics programme. He discovered javelin on YouTube, carved himself a stick and taught himself how to throw. Through Track+Field, he finally got the chance to compete against other young athletes. It’s particularly important when you consider that Parliament was told this year that more than 9,000 South African schools have no sports facilities at all. Gugu Zulu was my friend. I still consider him my friend. Ten years after we lost Gugs on Mount Kilimanjaro, I finally had the opportunity to sit down with Letshego Zulu and talk about that mountain, the man we both loved and the incredible life she has built since. A year after losing Gugs, Letshego returned to Kilimanjaro and reached the summit in his honour. From there, she began the incredibly difficult journey of picking up the pieces and choosing to live, something she would later write about in her memoir, I Choose to Live: Life After Losing Gugu. Today, Letshego is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, mom and formidable endurance athlete. She runs, she cycles, she takes on massive challenges and she uses her story to inspire women across South Africa. She's strong, funny, adventurous and just a really lekker South African. This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I sat down with one of South Africa’s best-known futurists and trend analysts, Dion Chang. I thought we were going to spend the whole conversation talking about business, technology and artificial intelligence (AI). And we did talk about all of that... but so much more! Dion has built an incredible career spotting the signals that tell us where society is heading. He started out in fashion and media before founding Flux Trends in 2006, and today he describes himself as a “professional cage rattler”, helping businesses understand the cultural, economic and technological shifts happening around them. But we also spoke about pups. Dion has been tracking the rise of the DINKWADs (Dual Income, No Kids, With A Dog). It describes couples who are choosing pets over children, but it also points to something much bigger: the changing definition of family and the increasingly important place our animals hold in our lives. Dion is also trained as an end-of-life companion doula and has done work around pet bereavement, so we spoke about how losing a beloved pup can genuinely be one of the hardest losses a person experiences. There’s a South African platform changing the way we think about the people who help keep our homes running. AskMandla is a WhatsApp-first fintech platform helping households formalise domestic employment, making it easier to manage contracts, UIF registration, payroll, payslips and leave. And that matters because domestic work is real work. Something as simple as a payslip can give a domestic worker formal proof of income, which can open doors to banking, insurance, savings and credit. Nkosi “The Rugby Guy” has become one of South African rugby’s most infectious superfans, building a growing online following through his massive personality, his love for the game and some pretty incredible encounters with his sporting heroes. Nkosi lives with cerebral palsy but he has never allowed that to define what he can do or dream about. In his own words, “Yes, I’ve got cerebral palsy, but that doesn’t stop me from doing what I love to do.” And what he loves is rugby. His journey has seen him meet Siya Kolisi, sharing those now-famous massive hugs and even receive a Springbok cap and jersey from Rassie Erasmus. More recently, his adventures have stretched beyond rugby too, including teaching Bryson DeChambeau a very South African “Howzit, boet!” at LIV Golf. Nkosi is also working on a documentary series about schoolboy rugby while continuing his own medical journey, but behind all the sporting moments is a young man using his platform to show others what is possible. A South African idea born in Johannesburg is changing the way people get help in an emergency. Warren Myers is the Founder and CEO of AURA, a technology company launched in 2017 after he recognised a frustrating problem: we could get a taxi or even a pizza faster than we could get emergency assistance. AURA uses technology to connect people in trouble with the closest vetted security or medical responders, and today that network has expanded from South Africa into Kenya, the UK and the United States. The company says its network has helped save 8,900 lives, with an average response time of around 7 minutes, and Warren's bigger vision is to eventually create a global emergency-response network where technology can get the right help to you, wherever you are. This week on "Good Things with Brent Lindeque", I chat to Brandon Fairweather, whose extraordinary health journey has inspired a deeply personal book about anxiety, hope and healing. Born with a congenital heart defect, Brandon underwent open-heart surgery at just 28 years old. While the operation was successful, the years that followed brought severe anxiety, two strokes, a near-fatal bleed and, later, a cancer diagnosis that he has since overcome. He says those experiences led him to a simple realisation. "It just got to a point where this became so debilitating. I just resolved that this had to mean something." That decision became The Hell Inside Our Heads, a non-profit book that encourages people to talk more openly about mental health while sharing practical ways to navigate anxiety. Brandon believes empathy is at the heart of every conversation. "The book talks about what people are going through, the mental battles you don't see." Alex Torrão is a father of three, an entrepreneur and the man behind #DAD2DAKAR, an incredible journey to qualify for one of the toughest motorsport events on the planet, the Dakar Rally. Between school runs, family time and business meetings, Alex is training and competing in major rally events across the world, all with one goal in mind: getting to that Dakar start line. But this story is about so much more than racing. Alex says it is not about winning Dakar, but about knowing he never gave up on a dream he has carried since he was young. And perhaps that is the reminder we all need today.
