#8 - Mike Matheny
2026/10/05
Mike Matheny, four-time Gold Glove winner and former St. Louis Cardinals manager, joins The Brian Roberts Podcast for a conversation about leadership, mentorship, Christian faith, and surviving a life-threatening brain hemorrhage in 2024. After 13 seasons in Major League Baseball and leading the Cardinals to the 2013 World Series, Matheny understands the responsibility of leadership. In this interview, he explains how a personal board of nine trusted advisors helps him navigate decisions, receive honest feedback, and grow as a husband, father, and leader. He also shares how those relationships helped him prepare for his interview to manage the Cardinals. The conversation takes a deeply personal turn as Mike recounts spending 20 days in the ICU, having his children arrive to say goodbye just in case, and experiencing peace through his faith while facing an uncertain future. He reflects on the support of his wife, family, and friends, and why urgency and impact now guide how he invests his time. Whether you lead a business, coach a team, or raise a family, this episode offers practical lessons on humility, accountability, asking for help, and surrounding yourself with people who will challenge you to grow.
