Description

Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact different people in different ways. Working in counseling I’ve learned that there are a lot more things that can rock our world that I never knew existed. Many of those things are hidden struggles that others may never know about — or at least they don’t know about until something comes along and quite literally “opens up a can” of past trauma or hidden struggles. So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of exploration and understanding through this podcast which offers short episodes and hopefully informational and motivational material to help you as you prepare for the last day of the week. Not every episode will be about a mental health struggle but there will certainly be weeks that are. Sometimes we will just hope to give you a boost as you close out the week. However, there are some rules of engagement here though - some understanding that I want you to have before you agree to go on the journey. 1. Keep An Open Mind - Some of the things we talk about here may be new territory. It may be like one of those movies like Journey to the Center of the Earth where you see things that seem hard to comprehend. I know there were a lot of things that were hard for me to grasp at first and has certainly been hard to relate to others. So think of it like Journey to the Center of Your Soul. 2. It’s an Ever-Changing Landscape - The counseling field is something that seems to change all the time so understand that I may say some things that may be different than what you might have been taught in the past. It may also change as I record these over time. It is also true that various theories of counseling reveal different techniques for dealing with things so I will likely be sharing things from a wide variety of therapeutic mindsets. 3. No Two Experiences are the Same - Just because we share a thought about anxiety or depression doesn’t mean it will apply to every person who hears and so this is certainly not a replacement for good person centered counseling - but you may very well find some helpful tips for various things you may face. So, do you think you are good to start that journey? I hope so. Travis and I hope through this short podcast, along with the weekly Helping, Healing, Humor Podcast and our website to bring a better understanding of mental health to all people but especially to the church. It is a part of us that has been ignored for far too long. I hope that even in this short little podcast to help us have a little more understanding.

Sweaters and Jackets. The smell of the drying leaves on the ground. Pumpkin Spice everywhere - like it or not. They all can only mean one thing in my mind: Hunting Season is here. Are You An Edwin or a John?
2026/10/02
Welcome in to the Friday Refresh…brought to you by Team Ben and Travis for St Jude Marathon Weekend. Go to https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Heroes/SJMMW?pg=personal&px=5816464&fr_id=164588 to donate toward our team and help battle childhood cancer. Are you an Edwin or a John? Edwin was one of the most famous actors of his time— having played in many Shakespearean plays and others in the Washington DC area. He was a face almost everyone would recognize. As he was waiting for a train he noticed that a young man fell into the space between the train and the walkway they were standing on—just as the train began to move. It would have surely crushed the young man, whose name was Robert. What Does Your Footprint Look Like?
2026/09/04
Welcome in to the Friday Refresh brought to you by our St. Jude Marathon Weekend Run. I’ve almost reached my goal of $4000 but still have a few hundred to raise. I would love your help. Go to Benandtravis.com for more details. If you have every been into hiking or camping you have probably heard the phrase “leaving your footprint” — and its generally not about what the sole of your boot or tennis shoe looks like. In that context it is usually in reference to what you leave behind when you have gone through a place. Leaving your footprint is not always considered to be a positive thing in the camping and hiking world. A common phrase might be “take only pictures, leave only footprints” but more modern ethics encourage leaving as few footprints as possible. Pack out what you bring in and avoid altering the landscape through your travel and stay. Why So Negative?
2026/08/21
Welcome into the Friday refresh brought to you by St Jude marathon weekend fundraiser. Thanks to all you who helped and donated and played in the Stayin Alice disco dodgeball tournament last weekend. I have less than $1000 to raise for my race so go to https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=5816464&fr_id=164588&pg=personal to donate. Have you ever wondered why we tend to focus more on the negative things in life? Why is it that sadness and worry and anger seem to weigh so heavily while memories that are much more joyful and happy and peaceful seem a little harder to recall and seem to weigh much less? It is what psychologists call Negativity Bias. Negativity Bias is an innate psychological tendency to emphasize negative experiences over positive ones. It influences our perception of events, often making us dwell more on bad experiences, like criticism or failure. Sitting is the New Smoking
2026/08/07
This episode is brought to you by the Tony "Pop Pop" Rogers Stayin' Alive Dodgeball Tournament for St. Jude (www.benandtravis.com/dodgeball)! I had never heard this phrase until I was sitting in a teacher inservice class earlier this week. Apparently it has become a catchy warning that is being repeated by medical and mental health professionals. What it means is this: Sitting down for too many hours each day hurts your body in serious ways -- just like smoking. While it is true that sitting isn’t as deadly as smoking has proved to be, if sitting all day most of the week, it can certainly lead to a myriad of health -- and mental health -- concerns. Slow blood flow, higher disease risk (such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure), weaker muscles, and weight gain are among the possible risks. Her Mother and I
2026/07/24
This episode is brought to you by the Stayin' Alive Dodgeball Tournament for St. Jude! Register you or your team at benandtravis.com/dodgeball! There is a phrase that I’ve dreaded saying for quite sometime. It is 4 simple words…yet very difficult to say. Dad daughters try to be courageous but these four words cause an aging father to dig deep to get them out. Her Mother and I. Ain't Getting Any Younger
2026/07/03
It seems that every day I get another reminder of my age. Sometimes it’s at the gym trying to keep up with adults 20-25 years younger than me. Sometimes it’s a meme about how old people were in movies, or what year certain classic movies about old times would be portraying if they were made today. Or the age of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Hint: the biggest majority were younger than me. One today said “when you realize the old timers that trained you are gone and you are now the old guy doing the training.” While that’s not entirely true, there are definitely more younger folks in ministry and I feel the pressure of answering things from the “older and wiser” position. While I’m older, I’m not sure I feel wiser. Be the Good

Help Ben meet his St. Jude fundraising goal of $4000 here: https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Heroes/SJMMW?pg=personal&px=5816464&fr_id=164588 A week like this week always seems to put things in perspective for me. I’ve spent the last week working in a town called Munford. Most of you have probably never heard of Munford, Alabama. It’s a fairly small dot on the map and on your GPS you have to zoom in a little to get it to show up. It’s not far from Oxford which more of you might know simply because of the interstate between Birmingham and Atlanta. Munford lies between Oxford and Talladega which I’m sure even more have heard of simply because of racing. And yes I said Talla-dig-ah and not Talla-day-ga because I learned that’s how the locals say it. A Different Light
2026/05/29
This is your Friday refresh brought to you by my St Jude Marathon Weekend Fundraiser. Go to Benandtravis.com to clink the link and give. I got a long way to go to $4000. So go to benandtravis.com and donate to help kids in need and help fund research for cancer. One of my favorite past times is bowfishing. I consider myself somewhat of an outdoorsman. I like to hike. I love to hunt. I have always loved outdoor sports—from baseball to football to ultimate frisbee and golf. But one of my favorites is bowfishing. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it combines the sport and art of archery with fishing. You have a bow, rigged with a reel and line attached to an arrow. You shoot the fish — where we live it is mostly gar, carp, catfish and buffalo — anything other than game fish like bass and brim. I’ve bowfished at the gulf and in florida wetlands for stingray, crabs, mullet, and tilapia. It is incredibly fun and challenging at the same time. And for me, the fellowship is even better. It is always with some combination of some of my closest friends, mentors, family, and brothers in Christ. One of the coolest things about bowfishing is 95% of the time it is at night on a boat set up with lights able to penetrate the surface of the water and allow us to see things that most people will never see. A Good Name

Welcome in to the Friday Refresh, brought to you by Team Ben and Travis for St. Jude Marathon Weekend. We are all raising money to help with cancer research at St. Jude and we would love for you to help us out. And by the way, send up an extra prayer of thanksgiving for Travis receiving the good news of “cured” from leukemia! All those folks who donated for years and years to cancer research at St. Jude might just have helped make that possible. Go to http://Benandtravis.com and follow the links to give to St. Jude and support our run. The school year is winding down. We are at that point in the year when many of the days are filled with fun activities or tying up the loose ends of the school year and praying every day that the break will hurry up and arrive. There are picnics, awards days, and outdoor fun days — basically “let’s get through the end of the year without a complete meltdown days.” Links mentioned in this episode: http://www.benandtravis.com http://www.facebook.com/groups/benandtravis http://www.patreon.com/benandtravis Reframing Hope Book https://www.benandtravis.com/books Helping. Donate here: https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=5816464&fr_id=164588&pg=personal He was in dire straights. He needed some financial help. Their band’s name was Dire Straights. And they needed another band member for their world tour. It was the perfect opportunity. Both parties mutually getting what they needed. And who knows how that could have turned out for both of them. The world will never know. Because  he turned the band down. It was around the year 1989 and this up and coming star wanted nothing more than to make his mark on the country music world. He called them back and regretfully declined because he felt he could do something great in the country world. And so a man with financial difficulties chose to stay there and the band would have to find someone else. Find Your Chill

Welcome in the Friday Refresh brought to you by the Adventures of Ben and Travis and the Divided Kingdom - PREORDER TIME! We have gotten amazing reviews on our first two books - The WorryCoaster and the Joy Rider and if you don’t have those you can order your copy today...but while you are at it, preorder the Divided Kingdom to help us get those out. In this installment Ben and Travis will be facing off against some dragons of loneliness, self-doubt, and jealousy that some kids have to face when they go through big changes like their parents going through divorce. You guys have been so kind already in purchasing the book and giving us kind comments...we can’t wait to see what else is in store. Go to BenandTravis.com today. It immediately changes the mood of the room. It is really amazing how our senses work. All year I have struggled with a few of my classes at school with them getting loud while they are supposed to be having quiet time working on their iPads doing work in reading and math. But they get to cutting up and playing rather than working. But that changed a little this week. I decided to turn on a YouTube kids channel that plays relaxing music and shows calming images of animals and sea creatures. The Darkest Brightest Day
2026/04/04
Passover was always a reminder of both the bad things of the world and the wonderful ways of God. On one hand the Passover was dark. Sacrifices. Blood on the door frame. A death angel. Darkness that sticks with you for generations. A reminder of the human condition. But at the same time the Passover was a bright light for a people enslaved. It was hope. It was freedom. It was a people getting their life back after years of hurt and pain. And that is the reason it was memorialized. Stories that would be repeated for generations. A memorial meal to help the people reflect on the powerful moment that God delivered them from Egyptian captivity. Songs and scriptures that would be memorized and repeated year after year. God’s love on full display for His people. Tsunami and Influence
2026/03/13
This is your Friday Refresh brought to you by The Adventures of Ben and Travis and the JoyRider. The books are here. We think they have a great message that helps kids and adults alike to think about including others, handling difficult situations, and navigating strong emotions. Thanks to Jacob’s excellent artwork they are also a lot of fun to look at. Go to BenandTravis.com/books and get yours today. Have you ever wondered if what you say or do even matters? I work at a school all day with kids whose ages from 4 year old to Seniors. I mostly see kids up through 5th grade but occasionally have the chance to visit with the older ones. And regardless of what age you teach or what age kids you might be parenting, there are usually times when you feel like your words fall on deaf ears and your actions go unnoticed. However, you may have a difficult time convincing Andrew Kearney of that.
