William Knibb
2026/10/21
"William Knibb was born on September 7, 1803, in Kettering, England, along with a twin sister. Kettering was, of course, the place of Andrew Fuller’s pastorate and the home of the Baptist Missionary Society."Ron MillerFor more information, visit CBTSeminary.org
George Liele and Jamaican Missions: Part 3
2026/10/08
"At the time of Liele’s arrival in the early 1780s, there were about 250,000 enslaved people, most of them taken from the gold coast region of Africa, what is today called Ghana. Liele was one of only about 4000 free people of color." -Ron Miller

George Liele and Jamaican Missions: Part 2
2026/09/24
"There has been some debate about whether George Liele was America’s first Baptist missionary, since his going to Jamaica predated by 30 years Adoniram Judson’s voyage to the East in 1812."
Ron Miller

George Liele and Jamaican Missions
2026/09/16
"The greatest historical impact that the English Baptists had related to English slavery was surely their involvement in mission activity in Jamaica, the inevitable ethical clashes that followed, and the impact of all this on British law and the slaves’ emancipation."

Robert Robinson and Slavery
2026/08/27
Four years before Abraham Booth preached his famous sermon against English slavery, another pastor, usually classified as a Particular Baptist, Robert Robinson, preached his own widely admired sermon on the topic. In his home church in Cambridge, on Sunday, February 10, 1788, Robinson delivered a message entitled “Slavery Inconsistent with the Spirit of Christianity.”

Abraham Booth and Slavery
2026/08/20
"The title of Booth’s sermon made his position very clear: the Bible condemned the enslavement of and commerce in human beings in the practices then collectively known as the African slave trade. He sought to prove this both from the Old and New Testaments and used Exodus 21:16 as his foundational text."Ron MillerFor more information, visit CBTSeminary.org
The Early History of the Name “Baptist”
2026/08/06
"One remarkable fact that strikes readers of early Baptist history is that occurrences of the term 'baptist' are scarce. There is no evidence that the first generation of the people we call 'English Particular Baptists' used it to label themselves." -Ron Miller

Lessons from Early Baptist General Meetings
2026/07/30
"Joint prayer was prominent in the meetings. Requests for Christ’s blessing on their preaching, church planting, and holiness of life were common. Days were appointed in the churches for prayer when special needs arose." -Ron Miller

Early Baptist General Meetings
2026/07/23
"Shortly after being initially formed, Particular Baptist churches were widely practicing associational meetings. This habit was rooted in their individual confessional statements and the specific teaching of article 47 of the 1644 London Baptist Confession of Faith." -Ron Miller

Elizabeth Gaunt Pt. 2
2026/07/15
"In the aftermath of Elizabeth Gaunt’s unforgettable execution, numerous accounts of her life and death appeared in the press. These generally painted a sympathetic picture of her as a gentle religious woman who cared for the needy in the area around Wapping."

Elizabeth Gaunt
2026/07/09
"In this episode, we return to London in the 1680s, where the inextricably linked politics and religion of the day resulted in the burning alive of a Baptist woman for treason." -Ron Miller

Christmas Evans Pt.5
2026/06/25
"God’s grace can overcome every obstacle, not only for salvation but for usefulness in his church. Lack of education, loss of an eye, and poverty are no impediments for God." -Ron Miller

Christmas Evans Pt.4
2026/05/21
"One result of Christmas Evans’ renewed spiritual vitality was a desire to recommit himself to God. The common way to do this in the 17th and 18th century reformed churches was to covenant with God. These were usually written and signed after occasions of mercy or felt need." -Ron Miller

Christmas Evans Pt.3
2026/05/14
"Sandemanian conversion didn’t result in remaking the whole man - mind, emotions and will. It was the bare belief of the bare truth as one man said. It was not dissimilar in this respect to the modern Free Grace movement and various other forms of easy-believism." - Ron Miller

Christmas Evans Pt. 2
2026/05/07
"Christmas Evans was helped by a few books written by four Johns. There was John Owen, his favorite author. There were John Bunyan and Jonathan Edwards. Finally, there was John Gill, who Evans so appreciated that he translated his commentary into Welsh."
