A Personal Update from Dana Kay: Why I’m Pressing Pause After 225+ Episodes
2026/10/14
After more than four years and more than 225 episodes, Dana Kay is pressing pause on The Soaring Child Podcast - but she is clear that this is not goodbye forever. In this heartfelt solo episode, Dana reflects on why the show began, what the community has built together, and why stepping back now will allow her to give more of her energy to the families supported inside ADHD Thrive Institute. For parents who have listened through school drop-offs, dog walks, laundry, and late-night worries, this message is both a thank-you and a reminder of how far the conversation around ADHD has come. Dana looks back at the shift from simply trying to stop behaviors to asking deeper questions about what a child's body, brain, and nervous system may be communicating. Dana shares the heart behind the podcast: her own experience as a mom whose son's ADHD diagnosis turned family life upside down, her determination to keep asking questions, and her belief that every child deserves the opportunity to soar. She also reflects on the many topics explored over the years, including nutrition, the gut-brain connection, inflammation, sleep, blood sugar, mouth breathing, screen time, supplements, parenting, picky eating, and functional lab testing. Listeners will hear why Dana has chosen to pause new recordings, what is staying the same at ADHD Thrive Institute, and the message she most wants parents to carry forward: stay curious, keep looking beneath the surface, trust your instincts, and remember that every small step toward understanding your child's biology, behavior, and unique needs matters. LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW ADHD Thrive Institute: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS [00:09] Dana shares that this episode is bittersweet: after more than four years and more than 220 episodes, she is pressing pause on The Soaring Child Podcast - while reassuring listeners that this is goodbye for now, not goodbye forever. [01:02] Dana reflects on why she started the podcast, first as a mom whose life was turned upside down by her son's ADHD diagnosis and then as a practitioner who discovered there was another way of looking at ADHD. [02:10] She looks back at the wide range of topics explored on the show, including nutrition, the gut-brain connection, inflammation, sleep, blood sugar, mouth breathing, screen time, supplements, parenting, picky eating, and functional lab testing. [02:38] Dana explains the deeper shift she hoped the podcast would create: moving parents from asking only how to stop a behavior to asking what a child's body, brain, and nervous system may be trying to communicate underneath the symptoms. [04:15] Dana reflects on how far the podcast has grown, with more than 220 episodes, listeners around the world, and thousands of families who have walked this journey alongside her. [05:32] She explains why she is taking a break: ADHD Thrive Institute has continued to grow, and she wants to give her best energy to the families inside the program rather than squeeze in or rush new podcast episodes. [06:25] Dana reassures listeners that she is not stepping away from helping families. ADHD Thrive Institute is still supporting, teaching, and helping children with ADHD thrive; only new podcast recordings are pausing. [08:14] Dana closes with the message she most wants parents to carry forward: stay curious, keep asking why, look beneath the surface, trust your instincts, and remember that every small step toward understanding your child's biology, behavior, and unique needs matters. MEMORABLE MOMENTS [00:48] “This isn't goodbye forever. It's simply goodbye for now.” [01:54] “With ADHD, or any child deserves the opportunity to soar.” [03:22] “I truly believe that when we ask better questions, we find better answers.” [04:01] “Every single conversation had the same goal, and that was to give you hope, to help you feel less alone, and to remind you that there is always another question worth asking.” [05:26] “It has probably been one of the greatest privileges of my entire career.” [07:26] “So rather than calling this an ending, I'm simply calling it a pause.” [08:23] “Never stop being curious, never stop asking why. Keep looking beneath the surface. Trust your instincts. You know your child best.” [09:08] “So for now, this isn't goodbye. It's simply see you later.” DANA KAY RESOURCES 🔗 WEBSITES: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ https://dana-kay.com/ 👋 SOCIALS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute 📕 INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLING BOOK: Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ 💻 FREE MASTERCLASS: Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ⭐ COURSES & PROGRAMS: ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
229: How Can I Help My ADHD Child When I Have ADHD Too?
2026/10/07
Your child doesn't need a perfectly regulated parent. They need a parent who knows how to reconnect after things go wrong. For parents who begin recognizing their own ADHD while trying to support a child with ADHD, that shift can take a tremendous amount of pressure off parenting. In this episode of The Soaring Child podcast, Dana Kay talks with ADHD coach, I Have ADHD Podcast host, FOCUSED founder, and author Kristen Carder about why a child's ADHD diagnosis so often becomes a mirror for a parent. Kristen explains how executive functioning challenges, emotional dysregulation, shame, and the feeling of always being "in trouble" can show up in parenthood, especially when a parent is trying to teach skills she may struggle with herself. They also walk through what healthy repair can look like after yelling, losing patience, or handling a moment in a way you wish you had not. Kristen shares a simple process for naming what happened, apologizing, taking accountability, asking what your child needs, and reconnecting without expecting immediate forgiveness or closeness. Listeners will hear practical ways to interrupt escalation in the moment, regulate themselves before trying to regulate their child, adjust unrealistic expectations, and build more support around their own ADHD. Kristen also shares why learning about adult ADHD can replace harsh self-judgment with clearer next steps, plus one small practice parents can begin today: apologizing and taking accountability for something every day. LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Kristen Carder's Website - https://www.ihaveadhd.com/ Kristen Carder's FOCUSED Program - https://www.ihaveadhd.com/focused Kristen Carder on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/i.have.adhd.podcast/ You're Not in Trouble by Kristen Carder - https://www.ihaveadhd.com/book I Have ADHD Podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/6t1VWB5kU1QgCPCLypBuMt KEY TAKEAWAYS [04:34] Many adults first recognize their own ADHD while completing forms, noticing symptoms, and learning about ADHD after their child is diagnosed. [06:57] When a mother with ADHD is expected to organize, remember, regulate, and teach the same executive functioning skills she struggles with, shame, self-judgment, and a sense of failure can build quickly. [09:53] Kristen describes the recurring feeling of being one mistake away from upsetting someone and explains why the message "you're not in trouble" can help adults move from shame toward accountability and repair. [12:43] Kristen shares research from her book process suggesting parent-child relationships are not built on perfection; they are strengthened by the ability to reconnect after ruptures. [18:12] Healthy repair starts by clearly naming what happened, acknowledging the parent's responsibility, saying "I'm sorry," and asking the child what they need to rebuild connection. [20:03] Parents should not tire of repairing with their children. Kristen emphasizes that repair can still matter with teenagers and adult children and that it is never too late to reconnect. [21:42] When both parent and child are escalating, Kristen recommends interrupting the momentum out loud, changing body position, pausing, and recognizing that the current approach is not working. [22:39] Parents often wait for their child to become calm before calming themselves, but Kristen says the order needs to be reversed: the parent regulates first so the child can borrow a calmer nervous system. [24:37] Realistic expectations can prevent avoidable escalation. Kristen describes giving herself more time, expecting normal child behavior, breathing, and choosing not to yell even when she does not feel calm inside. [27:13] For a mother who recognizes herself in the conversation, Kristen's first step is to learn specifically about adult ADHD rather than relying only on what she has learned through the lens of childhood ADHD. [29:11] Understanding procrastination, time management problems, impulsivity, and other struggles as areas that need support can replace the belief that a person is simply lazy or flawed. [32:02] Kristen's small action for parents is to practice apologizing every day so children can learn that people can make mistakes, take accountability, repair, and stay connected. MEMORABLE MOMENTS [11:17] "But I don't consent to being in trouble." [12:43] "Our relationships with our kids are not built on perfection or getting it right all the time. They're built on how well can we reconnect?" [18:12] "Repair involves a couple of things. We want to make sure that we're acknowledging what we did and really naming it." [20:03] "What's so important for us as parents is to never tire of repairing with our kids." [20:05] "It's never too late to repair with your kids." [21:42] "In the moment, in the moment, you have to use your ADHD to your advantage and interrupt yourself." [22:39] "So many of us are wanting our kids to be calm so that we can be calm. And that is backwards." [23:12] "It is our job to learn how to regulate ourselves, and then our kids borrow our calm-ish nervous system." [29:11] "You're not lazy. You're struggling with something that needs attention and you clearly need more support." [32:02] "Practice apologizing every day. Find something that you can apologize and take accountability for today."   DANA KAY RESOURCES 🔗 WEBSITES:https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ https://dana-kay.com/ 👋 SOCIALS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute 📕 INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLING BOOK: Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ 💻 FREE MASTERCLASS: Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ⭐ COURSES & PROGRAMS: ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
228: Why Don’t ADHD Kids Listen? with Luba Patlakh
2026/10/01
When a child repeatedly fails to follow instructions, gives one-word answers, or has an intense reaction to a small request, it may look like defiance. But the real challenge may be how their brain is processing, organizing, and communicating information after they hear it. In this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, Dana Kay speaks with speech-language pathologist and myofunctional therapist Luba Patlakh about one of the most overlooked areas of ADHD: communication. They explore how executive functioning, hearing, language processing, sensory needs, airway health, sleep, and emotional regulation can all influence a child's ability to listen and respond. Luba also explains why parents should be cautious about being told to simply "wait and see" when they notice developmental or communication concerns. She shares the signs that may warrant a professional evaluation, how speech therapy differs from occupational and physical therapy, and why a multidisciplinary approach can help families better understand what is happening beneath a child's behavior. Parents will also learn practical strategies they can begin using immediately, including how to pause before reacting, gather meaningful observations, model language, and use Luba's "field of two" technique to encourage children to communicate their needs more clearly. This conversation is a supportive reminder that behavior is often communication, and that understanding the reason behind a child's struggle can lead to more compassionate and effective support. LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Luba Patlakh's Website - https://lubapatlakh.com/ Luba Patlakh on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=18908878 Luba Patlakh on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lubapatlakh/ Luba Patlakh on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lubapatlakh The Growth Lab Podcast on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@thegrowthlabpodcast KEY TAKEAWAYS [00:00] A child may hear a parent's instruction but struggle with what happens next, including processing, organizing, remembering, and responding to the information. [03:53] Parents should examine when and where communication breakdowns occur rather than immediately assuming a child is ignoring them or behaving badly. [05:10] A lack of response can be useful information. Luba encourages parents to collect observations and consider executive functioning, hearing, cognition, and language processing. [06:34] Formal assessments from qualified professionals can help distinguish attention difficulties from speech, language, communication, or cognitive delays. [08:55] Speech-language pathologists may address articulation, language, comprehension, vocabulary, feeding, swallowing, airway health, and communication. [10:14] Occupational therapy focuses on sensory processing, fine-motor skills, grasping, writing, feeding skills, and functioning in daily environments. [13:04] Myofunctional therapy examines how the mouth, tongue, lips, nose, breathing, posture, and airway are working together. [13:41] Chronic mouth breathing and difficulty maintaining a full lip seal may affect sleep, regulation, attention, and behavior. [16:37] Parents should not automatically accept "wait and see" when they have ongoing concerns about communication, development, behavior, or regulation. [19:22] Luba's story of a three-year-old illustrates how speech, movement, eating, digestion, sleep, medication side effects, and development can be interconnected. [22:00] Pausing before solving and observing before reacting can help parents recognize patterns and bring clearer information to professionals. [25:54] The "field of two" technique encourages communication by presenting two choices, allowing the child to select one, and then modeling the language needed to express that choice. MEMORABLE MOMENTS [05:10] "That lack of communication at that moment is your data." [13:41] "If a child cannot have a full lip seal, it dysregulates the body." [15:57] "So it's called a recipe for disaster." [16:37] "I am a firm believer and I'm always going to be an advocate of begin yesterday." [17:56] "Why are we waiting for it to be worse? Like, what are we waiting for?" [20:45] "And that's so, imagine she would have waited and seen. What was she waiting and seeing?" [22:00] "You need to pause before you solve the situation and observe before you react." [23:18] "It's a process. So my advice is just slow down, really take a look at what's happening." [24:33] "If they're overreacting, throwing a fit somewhere in the store, you know, you wanna take a closer look at what's happening." [25:54] "You do wanna start doing what I call a field of two." From why manufacturers prefer them over natural options to their significant impact on kids with ADHD, we’re uncovering it all in this week’s episode. This is a conversation every family navigating ADHD needs to hear. We also explore the types of products most likely to contain these additives, arming you with the knowledge to make informed choices at the grocery store. To watch this episode on YouTube, go here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUK3TLDop-I    KEY TAKEAWAYS [3:52] What are artificial flavors and colors, and why are they so prevalent in our food? [9:54] How artificial flavors & colors can affect kids with ADHD [16:40] What types of products have artificial flavors and colors in them? [24:07] How to avoid artificial flavors and colors [25:01] Brands that often avoid artificial flavors and colors   MEMORABLE MOMENTS “For families of kids with ADHD, understanding the potential impact of these artificial ingredients is crucial in managing symptoms and promoting a more balanced and focused state of mind.” ”Artificial colors, also known as food dyes, are chemical substances developed in laboratories. They’re used in a wide array of foods to enhance appearance, making them more visually appealing.” ”Artificial flavors, similar to artificial colors, are chemical compounds created in laboratories.” “Unlike natural flavors that are derived from actual food sources, artificial flavors are synthesized to mimic natural tastes. These flavors are engineered to replicate the taste of fruits, nuts, spices, and other natural foods.” “Artificial flavors are often complex mixtures of numerous chemicals.” ”Here are some common terms indicating artificial flavors or colors: Artificial Flavors, Artificial Colors, Synthetic Flavors, Artificial Flavoring Substances, Synthetic Food Coloring.” ”Studies have illuminated a concerning link between artificial additives and ADHD symptoms.” ”In Britain, food is made with real ingredients, while in America, chemicals are often added with no warning label. This needs to change. American consumers deserve the same consideration as those outside the USA.” ”When chemicals are added to food, we should be informed. It’s baffling that the United States continues to allow ingredients that are not even food, contributing to staggering health issues.” ”Artificial flavors and colors are everywhere. Even a lot of things that are clear or white in color have dyes or flavors in them.” ”My best tip is to eat fewer processed foods as these additives are always in processed foods and to read those labels.” “My rule of thumb is, if you can’t pronounce an item, put that item back on the shelf. In this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, we are continuing our Summer Series by sharing another fan favorite episode. Tune in as  Dana Kay shares how to have a non-toxic summer. Summer is full of outdoor activities and memorable adventures. But it's also a time when our children are more exposed to various environmental toxins, like chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals in sunscreens, etc. These toxins can add a significant load to their bodies, exacerbating ADHD symptoms. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, discover how to have a non-toxic summer (and how to safely and effectively detox from any toxins your child might be exposed to). "Because children's bodies are still developing, they are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of chemical exposures. Their smaller size, higher rates of metabolism, and the fact that they're closer to the ground (where some toxins settle) further increase their risk." "Though chlorine isn't ideal, there are things you can do to help your  kids detox those chemicals before and after swimming." "You can still use sunscreen but choose a cleaner brand and this will go a long way in reducing your child's overall toxic load!" "It's much easier to limit a child's toxic exposure when they're at home with us under our supervision, but many of our kids will also be going to summer camps so we need to think about this too." "The goal is to support the body's natural detoxification processes, which include the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin, in a gentle and supportive way." 217: Eczema & ADHD Explained - Experts Answer with Andra McHugh
2026/07/16
Most parents assume ADHD and eczema are completely separate. One is the brain. One is the skin. But what if both are signs that the body is overloaded? In this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, Dana Kay sits down with Andra McHugh, founder of Eczema Kids and creator of the Eczema Elimination Method, to explore the powerful connection between the gut, immune system, inflammation, skin, environment, nervous system, and brain. After watching two of her own children struggle with severe eczema as a baby and toddler, Andra stopped asking, "What cream do I use next?" and started asking, "Why does this keep happening?" That one question changed everything. Through years of research, trial and error, and hands-on experience with families, Andra developed a whole-body approach to eczema that looks beyond symptom management and starts addressing the deeper stressors underneath. In this conversation, Dana and Andra discuss why eczema is not just a skin issue, how gut dysfunction and inflammation can show up through both skin and behavior, why food triggers are only one piece of the puzzle, and how hidden environmental stressors like mold, off-gassing, and EMFs can contribute to flare-ups. Parents will also learn practical first steps they can take right away, including whole foods, opening windows, reducing toxic exposures, and using Epsom salt baths to support detoxification, mineral levels, and nervous system regulation. [0:28] Dana explains that eczema often overlaps with gut issues, allergies, sensory sensitivity, sleep problems, anxiety, big emotions, and inflammation. [1:53] Dana introduces the idea that chronic symptoms are often the body's way of communicating that something deeper is overloaded. [3:50] Andra shares the moment conventional advice failed her family, when she was told to use steroid creams and hope her children grew out of eczema. [4:17] Andra explains that she knew this could not be the ceiling of her children's health or the story they were meant to live. [5:43] Andra reminds parents that they are often the true drivers of their child's outcomes because they shape food, home environment, and daily routines. [7:07] Andra explains that eczema is not really a skin condition at its root, even though the rash and itching show up on the skin. [7:32] Andra describes eczema as something that can spread like a wildfire and explains that the outside skin can mirror what is happening inside the gut. [8:43] Dana connects eczema and ADHD by explaining that both are often treated as isolated conditions instead of signs of deeper stress in the body. [12:23] Andra explains that she often saves testing for later and starts by reducing systemic inflammation through food and lifestyle changes first. [14:40] Andra connects eczema to the total load concept, explaining that some children's inflammation buckets seem full from the very beginning. [16:20] Andra names hidden environmental stressors that may contribute to eczema, including mold, new furniture, new cars, renovated homes, drywall, flooring, adhesives, and off-gassing. [19:50] Andra explains why she was concerned about both conventional steroid creams and many natural skincare products that still contained ingredients not ideal for eczema-prone skin. [24:39] Andra shares that real whole foods are one of the best first steps parents can take to reduce inflammation and support healing. [25:39] Andra's final practical tip is Epsom salt baths, which may help with inflammation, mineral support, detoxification, and nervous system regulation. MEMORABLE MOMENTS "What if the skin is actually another way the body communicates overload?" "It's almost like the body is waving little red flags everywhere saying, hey, something deeper is going on here." "so often the body is trying to communicate that something underneath the surface is overloaded." "the best you can do is really slather on these steroid creams and know, hope in a prayer, hope they grow out of it." "this just can't be the ceiling of their health." "This cannot be their story. This is not what my children are here for." "my kids were so uncomfortable and itchy and their skin was just literally falling off." "You're the buyer and the server of the food. You're the CEO of the home and the creator of the environment." "It's not really a skin condition at all." "It feels like a wildfire that you just like cannot get, can't get a handle on it." "your outside skin is a mirror of your intestinal lining." "how are they born with just their inflammation buckets already overflowing?" "They're already full. And now you have to take these extra measures to take some things out of their bucket" "they're just little sponges." 216: Stop Taking ADHD Meltdowns Personally. Do This Instead.
2026/07/08
When a child screams, "I hate you," "You're the worst mom ever," or "I wish you weren't my parent," it can feel deeply personal. But in this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, child and family therapist Ashley Gobeil explains that these explosive moments are often not signs of defiance, manipulation, or bad parenting. They are often signs of a dysregulated nervous system, emotional overwhelm, and a child who does not yet have the language or tools to express what is really going on inside. In this powerful conversation, Dana Kay and Ashley unpack what is really happening underneath intense ADHD-related meltdowns, why shame can keep both parents and children stuck in painful cycles, and how parents can respond in a way that calms the storm instead of feeding it. Ashley shares practical language parents can use in the moment, how to hold boundaries without escalating the situation, and why repair after a rupture is so important for building emotional regulation, connection, and long-term accountability. This episode is a compassionate reminder that parents do not have to get it perfect. They simply need to keep showing up, one moment at a time. When a child says things like "I hate you," Ashley explains that there is usually something much deeper happening underneath the behavior. [04:44] In the moment, it is not deliberate disrespect. Ashley emphasizes that these moments are often intense overwhelm, not a conscious choice to attack the parent. [05:42] Kids with ADHD often have very few tools available when dysregulated. When their nervous system is overwhelmed, the tools they may have learned often "go out the window." [06:39] Their nervous system can experience ordinary requests as threats. Even something as simple as being asked to put shoes away can trigger fight, flight, or freeze when a child is already overwhelmed. [07:35] "I hate you" may really mean "I feel out of control." Ashley explains that hurtful words often point to feelings like fear, shame, grief, lack of control, or not feeling understood. [09:15] Parents can shift their response by changing the lens. Instead of seeing the child as disrespectful or defiant, parents can view the behavior as a window into distress. [10:28] Shame can create a painful loop for both parent and child. The child may feel ashamed after losing control, and the parent may spiral into thoughts like "Have I failed?" or "What am I doing wrong?" [15:44] The parent's internal response comes first. Ashley encourages parents to remind themselves: "My child is not giving me a hard time. They're having a hard time." [17:35] Naming the feeling can help deescalate the moment. Parents can say things like, "You're really angry with me right now," or "Something really big must have happened for you to say that." [22:43] Repair is essential, and it is never too late. Ashley explains that repair after rupture helps rebuild connection, reduce shame, and teach emotional accountability over time. MEMORABLE MOMENTS "Have you ever had one of those moments where your child looks straight at you and says, I hate you. You're the worst mom ever. I wish you weren't my parent." "children's behaviors are a form of communication." "it is not a deliberate defiant moment or a deliberate disrespect." "they just go straight into the survival nervous system response." "There's just like tons of stuff happening at once and like their nervous system's on fire." "I feel really out of control. I feel like I don't get to make choice. I don't feel understood." "So so many of them actually feel terrible by themselves." "every single child has this deep innate desire to have a positive, loving relationship with their parent." "These are just words. This is not an emergency. This is not a reflection of my parenting." "It is never too late to go back and have a repair conversation."
