Suffering and tragedy are a regular part of life. Natural disasters claim the lives of thousands each year. Diseases leave death and disability in their wake. Crime and cruelty bring grief and pain. Accidents result in untold suffering. These leave us with profound questions of faith: Are tragedy and suffering God’s will? If not, why doesn’t God stop them? Why do our prayers for help seem to go unanswered? In this sermon series, we’ll spend four weeks considering these questions and more as we explore the topics theologians call “theodicy” and “providence” – how we reconcile God’s goodness with suffering and pain, and how God is at work in our world. If you’ve ever struggled with these questions, or have a friend or family member who has, join us for, "What is God Thinking?"

The books of Proverbs and James are considered Wisdom Literature. Proverbs is filled with short saying that are meant to speak big truths into our lives based on lived experiences. James, who tradition identifies as the half-brother of Jesus, writes about the struggles real Christians faced in the first century and they are many of the same struggles we face today. James and Proverbs both focus on wisdom and guidance for a life of faith in the midst of the ups and downs of life. They guide, and, at times, challenge in the hope of helping us live our faith in a difficult world.
