We’re back this month to kick off the Halloween season with David Cronenberg’s 1981 cerebral “schizploitation” classic, Scanners—a tale of telepathy, pharmaceutical experimentation, and a shadowy plot to usher not just Canadians, but all of humanity, into the next stage of evolution. Needless to say, there’s plenty here for us to chew on. While asking the tough questions—Is the strangely stiff acting actually intentional? Is there a Trotskyesque subtext hiding beneath all the psychic warfare?—we dig into the film’s conspiratorial themes, Cronenberg’s notoriously rushed production, and our decidedly mixed reactions to the finished product. Is Scanners an underappreciated piece of paranoid science fiction, or a solid premise trapped inside a movie that never quite comes together? And then there’s that head explosion—a special-effects moment so iconic that it may be more memorable than the entire movie surrounding it. Does Scanners, flaws and all, still deserve its cult reputation?

Looking at a map of the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa or Yemen, zooming out will show you the epicenter of world trade: the Suez Canal. It's been inevitable from the start that any country that poses a threat to the trade between Europe and Asia via that canal must be neutralized. That is why anytime I see countries in the area make the news, especially "unrest" in Somalia & now Ethiopia, I look to the bigger picture. Today, the news out of Ethiopia downright triggered me as the Wall Street Journal (and no doubt the entire MSM) suggests the rebel uprising there was somehow organic. It wasn't.
