72. “Choral Singing in America,” with Brian Gaukel and Matt Workman
2026/08/25
Today I am joined by Brian Gaul and Matt Workman, the filmmaker and producer behind the recent documentary film Choral Singing in America, which is now available for viewing through Amazon, YouTube, and Apple TV. It's a beautiful film that showcases the many different types of choral singing in the United States. It was really great to unpack the film with them and I hope after listening you are excited to watch it for yourself.
71. Navigating Cody Fry's "Symphony No. 1: The Unlikely Mariner"
2026/07/14
Today's guest is one of my favorite artists, singer, songwriter, fellow "Nashvillain", and French Horn enthusiast Cody Fry, whose unique blend of songwriting and classical music has created a passionate fan base and helped bridge the gap between pop and classical music for millions of people. He's been on a hot streak lately with three Grammy nominations for best arrangement, a busy travel schedule performing with top symphony orchestras all over the country, and most recently the premiere of his "Symphony no.1: The Unlikely Mariner", a 16-minute multimedia work recorded in a 2,000-gallon water tank in front of a 130 ft LED wall. Longtime listeners of the show will know that I've long been an advocate for artists to release their own sheet music, and Cody is one of the best at that. There's so much that we cover in this episode and I think you'll really be blown away by Cody. Garrett's arrangements of Cody's music: Go What If Photograph Want Me Back Pictures of Mountains
70. Embracing the Modern Band Movement, with Tom Zlabinger
2026/06/30
Today's show takes a look at the modern band movement, an increasingly popular force in music education that brings modern styles of music like pop, rock, and hip-hop into the classroom. My guest is Dr. Tom Zlabinger, associate professor of music at New York College, a board member of the Association for Popular Music Education, and the creator of Dr. Tom's Charts, his unique method of notation for modern band ensembles. We talk about his scores, the modern band movement, and the organizations that support it. If you're a music educator interested in bringing these tools into your classroom, then this episode is a great place to start. Mentioned in this episode: Dr. Tom's Charts Music Will Association for Popular Music Education
69. Getting Your String Writing "In Gear" with Katie O'Hara LaBrie
2026/02/24
Katie O'Hara LaBrie is a cellist, music educator, and a prolific composer for educational string orchestra, having published with Alfred Music and Randall Standridge Music, where she also serves as the orchestral division editor. She's also the author of a new warmup method "Getting in Gear." We had a great conversation about the basics of writing for strings as well as how to adjust your compositional style to fit the grade level of the perfomring ensemble. At the end of the show we'll also share two recent compositions of hers for string orchestra: "Atoms" and "Unbridled Spirit."
68. Brian Balmages: Finding Success in Educational Music
2026/02/03
Brian Balmages is a world-renowned composer and conductor, as well as the director of Make Music Publications and Digital Education for Alfred Music. Today we are taking a deep dive into his compositional process as well as the world of Concert Band Music. His approach to the role of a composer and his philosophy of music is very refreshing and I think composers and music educators especially will get a lot out of this episode. He also introduces two of his works for us to listen to, "Sunset Suspended" and "Love and Light." --- Check out sellingsheetmusic.com for episode transcripts and more! 67. Tommee Profitt’s “The Birth of a King” and the Composer as Producer
2025/12/02
Today's guest has been on my interview "wish list" since day one! He's racked over 100 BILLION streams of his cinematic music, as well as 17 platinum and 26 gold certifications as a producer for artists such as Migos, Avril Lavigne, Josh Groban, and NF. His Christmas Album "Birth of a King," plays nonstop in my house from Thanksgiving to New Year's and the live concert version featuring 20 artists, a 60 piece orchestra, and a 100 voice choir will be playing this weekend to a sold out crowd at Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville. Please welcome to the show, the one and only, Tommee Profitt!
[REBROADCAST] AI and the End of Physical Sheet Music: Enote CEO Boian Videnoff
2025/10/22
It seemed the perfect time to revisit this interview from last year with Boian Videnoff, the co-CEO and co-founder of Enote, a music technology startup in Berlin developing powerful AI-technology capable of digitizing sheet music into fully interactive musical scores.
66. ScoreCloud: Bridging the Gap Between A.I. and Live Performance, with Johan Ronström

Today's episode highlights another company working on developing AI sheet music capabilities. My guest is Johan Ronström, the project manager of ScoreCloud, which has been described as "Google Translate for Sheet Music."

We had a fantastic conversation about the underlying technology and swell as an honest conversation about what the future of the music industry might look like.
64. Building “Shazam for Sheet Music”: Songscription CEO Andrew Carlins
2025/09/02
Andrew Carlins is the CEO and Co-Founder of Songscription, a company that uses AI models to automate music transcription from audio recordings.  The company is still in the early stages, having launched only a few months ago at the time of this interview, but they’ve got big ideas about how to use technology to revolutionize music education.
63. Adrian Holovaty on Soundslice, Chat GPT Hallucination, and the Future of Interactive Scores
2025/08/26
Adrian Holovaty is the founder and CEO of Soundslice, a web-based application for learning music that combines audio, video, and music notation. We recorded this conversation in July of 2025, a few weeks after Soundslice was in the news because Chat GPT was directing its users to Soundslice promising a feature that did not exist. What makes the story even more insane is that in response Adrian decided to quickly develop and implement that feature, making Soundslice arguably the first company in history forced to add a feature to its product because of an AI hallucination. 62. Musicnotes’ Michael Sinshack and Joe Harris on the Human Touch Behind Digital Sheet Music
2025/08/05
Today's episode is part two of my visit to Musicnotes Headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin and it features Michael Sinshack, a publications administrator, and Joe Harris, a music specialist for Musicnotes.com. Both are experienced editors and engravers who've been working in digital sheet music since the very beginning and they have a lot of really great insight about music notation, quality control, and the human effort that is still required in this increasingly digital world. 60. Dan Forrest: Composing and Marketing Major Works
2025/06/10
I'm very excited for today's episode! Joining me is composer Dan Forrest to talk about everything that goes into composing and marketing a major or multi-movement work a.k.a. one that's much longer than a typical composition or arrangement. We tend to focus on those shorter pieces of music on this show, because that's normally the place for aspiring composers to start. But, as you'll soon hear, those larger works have their place and there's a lot to be gained from writing them. We of course got into publishing as well. Dan has a fantastic perspective as someone who's both a composer and an editor and also as someone who's chosen both traditional and self publishing for his works, making him the perfect type of guest for this show!
59. Breaking Down Jake Runestad's "Earth Symphony"
2025/04/22

My guest is Jake Runestad, the featured composer of the Finale Concert, who conducted his Earth Symphony for choir and orchestra. Afterwards he came on the show to talk about the performance, share about the piece, and discuss his compositional process. There's a lot of great advice in this episode, including insights on working with a lyricist, writing music about difficult subjects, and navigating the business of composing.
