With this discussion, Robin and I begin a new weekly series entitled "Braiding Bread". Unlike our series "Bread Crumbs", in which we discuss various and sundry issues that we feel are worth talking about, this series takes the weekly Torah portion and braids together with a passage from the Apostolic (or "Greek") Scriptures. So join us for a lively discussion that we hope will provide some nourishment for your soul. This is the only psalm by David found in the 3rd book (the "Leviticus" book) of Psalms, and it appears in the middle of four psalms by the Sons of Korah. Why this unusual arrangement? This moving psalm also contains other unusual and unique features. Why does it refer to God as "Master" (adon) seven times? How can David call himself a "chasid" (a pious man)? What is required for a person to be truly "pious"? What did David mean by "unite my heart"? Join us for an insightful journey through this beautiful and unusual psalm. If you ask most Christians where 'communion' is found in the Scriptures, they will turn to the Gospels, point to the "last supper" and say, "There it is right there!" But a close examination of these passages reveal quite a different event from the ritual of 'communion' practiced in today's church. Take a journey with us back through history and let's see what this ancient tradition was - and should be - all about. (And don't be afraid. It's all good.) The furnishings of the Tabernacle are arranged in pairs: the Ark & the Cover; the Table of Showbread & the Menorah; and now the Altar & the Laver. These last two (rather simple) furnishings contain important lessons into the way we are to approach God, i.e. the path of Fire and Water. We will look at how Solomon made himself a living sacrifice and how the bronze laver reflects God's Word. But we conclude this lesson with a fascinating spiritual discovery: how Fire and Water are depicted in all three areas of the Tabernacle, and what that means for us!
