Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson home in February 2026. Days later, two ransom notes arrived at KOLD-TV: the first demanding $4 million in Bitcoin (rising to $6 million) and threatening to kill her; the second claiming she "perished" of heart-related causes and was "buried in nature." The notes contained non-public details (a white smartwatch on the floor, a destroyed backyard floodlight), and the Pima County Sheriff's Department fully released them in late July. Nine months later, there is still no arrest, no body, and no resolution. In this episode, we break down the exact wording of both notes, the linguistic and practical clues investigators are using, the Bitcoin ransom mechanics, the doorbell camera footage of the masked man, and why a high-profile media family's crisis has become an endless true-crime spectacle with almost no public progress. We also look at the tension between the family's public pleas, the sheriff's mixed statements, and the broader questions the case raises about crypto kidnappings, elderly vulnerability, and how unsolved cases of the rich and famous get consumed as content.🎙️ THE INTERVIEW ROOM | CHRIS & KAREN McDONOUGH**Real Cases. The man seen on Nancy Guthrie's doorbell camera may not have been the mastermind. This theory argues he was the "waiter" — the visible person who carried out the plan — while someone else (the "chef") orchestrated everything from behind the scenes. When someone dials 911, we assume they want help. Retired NYPD Lt. Commander Vernon J. Geberth — author of Practical Homicide Investigation, the book detectives still call the bible of death investigation — says that is not always true.In this interview, Geberth explains how some callers stage the phone call itself to cover a crime: they report an accident, or an unknown intruder, when the death was a homicide. He walks through what investigators listen for in that first recording — the official first statement in the case — and how a staged call often lines up with a staged scene. This episode is for the public, not a how-to. It is about why first responders and detectives treat unattended deaths as possible homicides until the facts say otherwise, and why the 911 tape can make or break that investigation.
