REVISITED - Episode 32: Setting Boundaries and Dealing with Internalized Shame with Dr. Megan
2026/09/30
Special Re-Release:Today, Physician Empowerment is bringing back a previous episode with an important message. ____ Dr. Kevin Mailo welcomes board-certified family physician and obesity medicine specialist Dr. Megan Melo to the show. Megan has a coaching business, Healthier For Good, focused on transforming the lives of physicians through one-on-one or group coaching. Megan and Kevin talk about burnout, shame, and how physicians can learn to set boundaries and overcome perfectionism.  Dr. Melo explains how perfectionism sounds benign and hardworking but is actually often shame avoidance. If we are perfect enough, we can avoid being shamed or called out. She talks about how that plays out in affecting the day-to-day lives of physicians. Megan and Dr. Mailo share stories from their own experiences and discuss what steps physicians can take to start pulling out of perfectionism and shame cycles. They address setting boundaries for self-care and why taking care of ourselves is such a vital aspect of being a physician. Megan offers coaching for physicians to help them achieve these goals, and this episode highlights some of the insights she has that can change lives for the better.   About Dr. Megan Melo Megan Melo is a physician, board-certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine, as well as a Certified Life Coach for physicians. She helps physicians struggling with burnout and overwhelm to feel better, including those who have been labelled "toxic" or "difficult" by their employers. Megan is on a mission to help physicians and other healthcare professionals heal from burnout and change their lives for the better. She does this through one-on-one and group coaching, as well as podcasting, blogging, and speaking to groups.  Resources discussed in this episode: Ending Physician Overwhelm podcast-- Physician Empowerment:  Attend an upcoming Empowerment RetreatJoin the Physician Empowerment Masterclass nowWebsite: PhysEmpowerment.caDr. Megan Melo:  website: HealthierForGood.com linkedin instagram Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. John explains the role of donor-advised funds, how they allow donors to separate the timing of charitable donations from grant decisions, and why they can be an effective tool for long-term philanthropy, tax planning, and legacy building. Dr. Lim and John discuss how donor-advised funds can help Canadians become more intentional, strategic, and effective in their charitable giving. John shares his perspective that philanthropy should be approached with the same thoughtfulness as any other aspect of financial planning, allowing donors to maximize both their community impact and available tax advantages. He explains how charitable giving can become a long-term tool for legacy building and personal values alignment, while emphasizing the importance of working with knowledgeable advisors who understand the opportunities available. Physicians interested in philanthropy, tax-efficient giving, and creating a lasting charitable legacy will find practical insights throughout this conversation. About John Bromley: John Bromley grew up with charity at the core of his family’s values. He started his career in corporate finance working with PwC and RBC Capital Markets, and then went to work with world-renowned experts in charity law. Its mission? Nurture the generosity within each person, and bring the resources for creating change in the world to everyone. To date, Charitable Impact has facilitated more than $1.8 billion in donations and is helping more and more people build the brighter future they imagine. They unpack the difference between inspiration and motivation, exploring the importance of clarifying your internal “why”. Internal motivation, comprised of values, meaning, and identity, tends to outlast external motivation, which focuses on validation, status, and expectations. Michelle Jackman explains that this is especially true during setbacks. Dr. Mailo and Dr. Jackman examine how physicians are often driven by fear-based motivation and perfectionism, and how that can undermine performance and joy over time. Dr. Jackman shares practical strategies for shifting from harsh self-criticism to constructive self-coaching, a process that includes naming the “inner critic” and building self-awareness through curiosity, as well as practicing self-compassion. She highlights the often-missed performance tool of rest and recovery; practices like micro-meditations, journaling prompts, breathwork, yoga, and somatic awareness. They discuss resilience through setback planning and the value of building an “elite team” around oneself through support systems, such as mentors and coaching, that help sustain a meaningful long game. About Michelle Jackman, MSc, MD, FRCPC, Pediatrics, Certified Executive Coach: Over the past 25 years, Michelle Jackman has taken a few “scenic trips” on her path to a gratifying career in clinical Pediatrics—most notably a transition from General Surgery residency and a more recent move into Executive Coaching. In 2020, Michelle worked with a physician executive coach. The experience was transformative and inspired her to pursue formal coaching training. She went on to complete her Executive Coach certification through Erickson International. Michelle integrates coaching techniques into her clinical work as a practicing Pediatrician, collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and serving as a medical leader and educator. She finds this blend of coaching and clinical practice deeply gratifying and credits it as a catalyst for strengthening the effectiveness of care delivery for patients and their families. Her Executive Coaching training has also supported greater satisfaction and alignment in her personal life—as a parent, competitive athlete, partner, and friend. In addition, Michelle is a Pediatric Obesity specialist and researcher with an MSc in exercise physiology, and she is qualified to support clients navigating decisions related to physical and mental performance goals. Nicolas has had an international career ranging from journalism for Bloomberg News in Paris and Tokyo to working with a Canadian investment fund focused on resource exploration. He explains to Wing why the government established the Flow-Through Share Program to encourage private investment in exploration for critical minerals like copper, nickel, lithium, and uranium, all of which are essential for the low-carbon economy, AI, electric vehicles, and more.  Tax benefits of investment in resource exploration include a 100% income deduction for the invested amount, a 30% Critical Mineral Exploration Tax Credit on eligible investments, as well as potential returns from high-performing exploration companies. Though it’s high risk due to the speculative nature of mining startups, for incorporated professionals and high-income earners, flow-through shares can be a valuable year-end tax planning tool. Nicolas advises investors to understand the risks, eligibility requirements, and importance of professional fund management but also highlights the patriotic and economic significance of investing in Canadian critical mineral projects. Jason focuses specifically on what Canadian physicians and incorporated professionals should consider and prepare for with their professional finance and tax partners. Jason states that with the Canada Revenue Agency becoming more sophisticated, well-staffed, and equipped with AI-driven mining tools, the chance of an audit has never been higher.  Wing and Jason explore common audit triggers: anything from expense deductions like travel, car, and professional dues to Employment Insurance audits that target owner-operator corporations. The CRA has new powers, which Jason outlines, and they include the ability to compel oral interviews. There is a dispute resolution process as well, but it goes from initial audit through appeals to potential court action. Maintaining accurate corporate records, bookkeeping, and compliance documents is essential, and having the right team - general accountants, tax specialists, and lawyers - is important. The bottom line, as Wing and Jason emphasize, is to expect an audit, keep strong records, and don’t face the CRA without professional representation.  About Jason Pisesky: Jason is a tax lawyer, whose practice background is extensive and includes personal and corporate tax planning as well as litigation and dispute resolution. Self-awareness about our own blind spots is something that physicians need to avoid the single-minded productivity focus that leads to emotional numbing, siloed thinking, and a lack of overall well-being. They talk about people pleasing and recognizing our humanness, wellness habits, lifestyle practices that allow for reflection, and how to identify both skills and blind spots to achieve balance in our needs. The conversation delves into the often-overlooked need for physicians to care for their own wellness as much as they care for patients.
