Two men. Two mysterious lead masks. A remote Brazilian hillside. And a case so bizarre that it still has people asking one very big question: were they trying to contact aliens? Welcome to Killers, Cults & Queens, where Cheryl and Nikki investigate one of the strangest unexplained deaths in true crime history: the infamous Lead Masks Case. On 20 August 1966, an 18-year-old boy went looking for his lost kite on Vintém Hill in Niterói, Brazil. Instead, he stumbled across the bodies of two men lying side by side in the grass. They were dressed in suits and raincoats, with two unusual metal masks beside them. There were no obvious injuries, no clear signs of a struggle, and absolutely no straightforward explanation for what had happened. The men were identified as Manuel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, two TV repairmen who had travelled from their hometown on what they described as a work trip. But what were they really doing on that remote hillside? As investigators examined their belongings, they uncovered cryptic handwritten instructions mentioning capsules, a specific time and location, and the instruction to await a signal while wearing masks. Unfortunately, delays meant that the post-mortem examinations provided few answers, and their deaths were eventually attributed to natural causes. But this is where things get REALLY strange. The men were reportedly involved in a group known as scientific spiritualists, who explored the possibility of communicating with spirits and otherworldly beings. There were also reports of strange lights and a mysterious object in the sky around the time of their deaths. Add in an earlier death involving another lead mask, and suddenly the theories become even more unsettling. Were Manuel and Miguel attempting a dangerous experiment? Did they take their own lives as part of a bizarre spiritual ritual? Or were they genuinely trying to make contact with extraterrestrial beings? More than six decades later, the Lead Masks Case remains unexplained, and the truth behind those strange masks may never be known. Imagine discovering that your wife has been secretly keeping her lover in the attic… for FOUR YEARS. In this episode of Killers, Cults & Queens, Nikki and Cheryl head back to the 1920s for one of the strangest true crime stories we've ever covered: the bizarre case of Dolly Oesterreich and Otto Sanhuber. In 1922, Fred Oesterreich was shot dead inside his Los Angeles home. His wife Dolly was discovered locked inside a pantry, apparently the terrified victim of a robbery gone wrong. But there was one problem: the evidence didn't quite add up. Because hidden above their heads was Dolly's secret lover, Otto Sanhuber — a young man who had been secretly living in the couple's attic for years. Otto had originally met Dolly while working at her husband's factory, and their relationship soon developed into a bizarre secret arrangement. After Fred discovered their affair, Otto was fired… but Dolly wasn't prepared to let him go. Instead, she found a way to keep him close — by hiding him in the attic. For years, Otto lived in secret above Fred's head, helping Dolly around the house, writing pulp fiction and waiting for the opportunity to escape his strange double life. Then Fred was murdered. The Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 — but what happened after the ship disappeared beneath the Atlantic? In the final part of our Titanic series, Nikki and Cheryl go beyond the famous sinking to uncover what happened to the survivors, the dead, and the wreckage left behind.
