Navigating Adventures and Elevation: Insights from Justin and Robbie
Join Justin and Robbie as they share tales from their travels and running experiences.
Welcome to another edition of Golden Hour Adventures, where we dive into the adventures of Justin and Robbie, and share insights from their journeys.
Life on the Road
Justin kicks things off from his travel trailer in Texas, where he’s battling the heat. He humorously notes that while the audio might be a bit compromised due to the AC, it’s a small price to pay to avoid melting in the Texas sun.
Meanwhile, Robbie is still unpacking from his trip to Steamboat, where the rains caught him off guard. He reflects on the chaos of returning home in a downpour and the looming task of repacking for his next adventure in Utah.
Running and Acclimation
The conversation shifts to running, with Justin sharing his experience of acclimating to the humid Texas climate. He highlights a feature on his Garmin watch that measures acclimatization to elevation, revealing he’s adjusted to about 5,000 feet despite being at a lower elevation. This sparks a discussion about how heat training can mimic the effects of elevation training, a topic they have explored in previous episodes.
Robbie shares his own experiences of working out in higher altitudes, noting how his heart rate spiked during his workouts in Steamboat. The duo reflects on how they both managed to handle elevation changes during their recent adventures, with Justin surprised by his ability to run at higher altitudes without feeling the effects.
Rattlesnake Fear and Full Moon Runs
Justin expresses some apprehension about running trails in Texas due to rattlesnakes, humorously questioning the number of snakes lurking in the overgrown trails. He plans to attend a full moon run, showcasing his adventurous spirit despite his fears.
Current Events in the Running Community
The conversation takes a lighthearted turn as they discuss a buzz in the running community involving Camille, a well-known figure. Justin and Robbie dive into the peculiarities of her recent career moves, reflecting on the unexpected twists and turns that can happen in the public eye.
"Camille, are what are you going through? Like what what's happening here?" — Justin
They share a laugh over the comments surrounding her latest endeavors, showcasing the humorous side of the running community.
As always, Justin and Robbie provide a mix of humor, insight, and camaraderie that make their discussions feel personal and engaging.

Caribou, Honey, and the $600 Mistake Every Runner Makes
2026/08/17
Golden Hours Adventures — Episode Show Notes
Wilderness, Honey, and the Business of Racing
This episode covers a lot of ground — literally. Justin takes us into the Alaskan backcountry for a non-motorized caribou hunt, then straight into honey harvest season, before sitting down with Robbie Pike to unpack the messy realities of race cancellations, deferrals, and what athletes actually deserve from race directors.
In This Episode
A non-motorized caribou hunt deep into remote Alaska
The physical toll (and payoff) of a 13-mile pack-in hike
Preserving meat in warm weather after a successful harvest
The shift from hunting season straight into honey harvest
Why local honey matters — for flavor and for allergies
A candid conversation with Robbie Pike on race cancellations, refunds, and trust
What good race-director communication looks like in practice
The case for race insurance
Deferrals, distance changes, and race-day flexibility
Segment One: Caribou Hunting in the Alaskan Backcountry
Justin walks through a non-motorized hunt — no four-wheelers, just boots on the ground into an area known for minimal human traffic. The solitude was the point as much as the hunt itself.
"I could see miles and I didn't see a single person the entire time other than the group of people that I was with."
After a grueling 13-mile hike to camp, the trip became a full-circle moment for all the gym work leading up to it.
"Thinking back to all those times of just in the gym doing heavy squats... it's like, man, this is what we trained for."
The hunt ended in a successful harvest, with Justin walking through the real logistics of keeping meat preserved in warm weather — and reflecting on why this style of hunting feels more meaningful than a motorized approach.
"I really, really like hunts like that. It's a lot more fun than just riding a four-wheeler and pulling it up to the animal."
Segment Two: Honey Harvest Season
Fresh off the mountain, Justin heads straight into beekeeping season, sharing what makes harvesting your own honey different from anything you'd grab off a store shelf.
"There's something special about the honey that you harvest versus the honey you go buy at the store."
He also touches on the case for sourcing honey locally — particularly the reputed benefits for seasonal allergy relief.
Segment Three: Race Cancellations, Deferrals, and Athlete Trust (feat. Robbie Pike)
Robbie Pike joins Justin to dig into a topic that hits close to home for every endurance athlete: what happens when a race gets cancelled, and whether race directors are handling it fairly.
On the transparency problem. Robbie points to the A100 as a case where cancellation left runners with refunds that didn't come close to covering their loss — and the trust damage that follows.
"Those people that didn't get their money back this year, I guarantee you they're not signing up the next year to go run the race. They're probably done with that race."
A better way to handle it. On the flip side, Robbie shares a race director who proactively rolled his entry into the next year's race after he had to bow out.
"I got an email in July saying that I was signed up for next year already. I didn't have to do anything besides send him the email saying..."
The case for race insurance. Justin makes the practical argument for treating race insurance as a default, not an afterthought.
"I'd rather pay the twenty bucks and lose out on twenty bucks than lose out on five, six hundred bucks."
Deferrals and distance changes. The two get into the gray areas — dropping down a distance for health or training reasons, or even deciding race-morning to go longer than planned.
"If you're feeling good that morning and you're like, well, I might as well just do the fifty mile..."
Their conversation makes the case for race policies with more built-in flexibility, and for race directors who treat communication as part of the job, not an afterthought.
Final Thoughts
From a silent Alaskan ridge line to the honey harvest to the fine print of race deferral policies, this episode is a reminder that the outdoor and endurance communities run on the same currency: trust, preparation, and respect — for the land, the animals, and each other.
Listen to the full episode for the complete conversation and all the personal anecdotes that didn't make it into these notes.
Happy adventuring.
Training Up Heat Acclimation vs. High-Altitude Grind
2026/08/12
Training for Elevation: Heat vs. Altitude
Exploring the best methods for altitude training and more.
In this week’s episode of *Golden Hour Adventures*, Justin and Robbie dive into the nuances of training for elevation. With Justin preparing for a move to West Texas, the conversation naturally shifts to how athletes adapt to different environments, particularly when it comes to heat training versus altitude training.
Training for Elevation: Heat vs. Altitude
The episode kicks off with a light-hearted banter between Justin and Robbie about their recent activities, including Robbie's pacing duties at Lean Horse 100 and Justin’s mountain hikes. As they transition into their main topic, they explore a critical question for athletes: Is it better to get heat trained for elevation, or is it better to just go up into elevation to get elevation trained? This dilemma is particularly relevant as both hosts prepare for their upcoming challenges.
Experiences and Recovery
Robbie shares his recovery journey after a recent race, humorously noting his typical lack of training and his busy work life during the Sturgis rally. He reflects on the chaos of the rally and his first experience attending a Megadeth concert, revealing how these events play a role in balancing work and personal pursuits.
Justin engages with Robbie’s experiences, providing insights into his own recent hikes and the physical challenges they present. He humorously describes his struggle with steep trails and the inevitable slips, emphasizing the importance of getting outside and enjoying nature despite the risks.
The WNBA Discussion
In a more serious vein, the duo also touches on the current discussions surrounding the inclusion of trans athletes in sports, particularly the WNBA. Justin expresses his concerns as a father about the implications for young female athletes, sharing his support for individual choices while advocating for fairness in competition.
"As a father of a daughter, I would hate for my daughter to work her butt off only to have to play against a biological man." – Justin
Closing Thoughts
As this episode wraps up, it’s clear that both Justin and Robbie are navigating their athletic journeys with humor and introspection. They remind listeners of the importance of adapting to their environments, whether through heat or elevation training, and staying engaged in the broader conversations around sports.
If you’re interested in more discussions about athletic training, environment, and the challenges athletes face, stay tuned for future episodes with Justin and Robbie!
