Safety, Health and Injury Mitigation in Firefighter Training
2026/10/23
In this episode of NATA-Cast, hosts Mollie Pillman, MS, MBA, CAE, and Katie Scott, MS, ATC, CAE, welcome University of Kentucky researchers Phillip Gribble, PhD, ATC, FNATA, and Tim Uhl, PhD, PT, ATC, FNATA, to discuss the SHIFT (Safety, Health, and Injury Mitigation in Firefighter Training) study and the impact of providing firefighters with direct access to athletic trainers and physical therapists. Funded by FEMA, the study examines the prevalence and financial impact of musculoskeletal injuries among firefighters and explores how early intervention and access to healthcare professionals can improve outcomes. Gribble and Uhl share findings showing that departments with direct access to athletic trainers and physical therapists experienced fewer injuries, lower treatment costs and significantly less time lost from work. The conversation also explores common causes of firefighter injuries, challenges to implementing these programs, and how successful models can help departments make the case for investing in proactive injury prevention and care.
