Matthew Farwell helped train Detective Daniel Barber in 2013 and shared the detective office with him on the four-to-midnight shift. Barber testified that in eight years, Farwell never once reached out off duty to ask what was happening overnight. Then, from his wife's hospital room, hours after prosecutors say he walked into Sandra Birchmore's building in a mask, Farwell texted him asking if anything was going on. A three-minute phone call to the Stoughton Police Department on January 20th, 2021, should have ended Matthew Farwell's career. Instead, prosecutors say, it ended Sandra Birchmore's life. The caller reported Sandra's relationship with Farwell. She was put on hold twice. The recording was later auto-deleted. A department employee allegedly tipped Farwell off, and twelve days later Sandra was dead. Farwell's twin brother William worked in that building. He admitted his own relationship with Sandra, gave state police a false account, ran unauthorized database searches on her, and was permanently decertified in September 2024. The first murder case against Barry Morphew collapsed in April 2022. The prosecution’s tranquilizer theory had no body to support it. Seventeen months later, Suzanne Morphew’s remains were recovered in Saguache County — roughly fifty miles south of the family home, in a county outside the original search. Bone testing revealed butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine — the three compounds that form BAM, a wildlife tranquilizer used on elk and deer. The cause of death was ruled homicide. Barry Morphew had access to BAM through his Indiana deer operation. His last prescription was filled in March 2018. He acknowledged using BAM on deer in Colorado in April 2020, one month before Suzanne disappeared — then told investigators he hadn’t used tranquilizers in Colorado at all. In June 2025, a grand jury indicted him on first-degree murder after deliberation. He was arrested in Arizona, where he’d been living under the name Lee Moore. Sgt. John Fanning supervised the Massachusetts State Police unit that ruled Sandra Birchmore's death a suicide. Prosecutors told the jury that when Fanning interviewed Matthew Farwell's twin brother William on February 11th, 2021, he said they needed an investigation like they needed a bullet in the head. Nothing criminal. Not investigating. That's the prosecution's account of what William Farwell later told the FBI. Sandra Birchmore’s doctor screened her for depression on January 21. She scored high. The last question asked whether she’d had any thoughts of hurting herself in the past seven days. Sandra scored a zero. Eight days later, at her last appointment, she reported no bleeding and nothing worse than jitters from her medication. Her doctor expected to see her February 17. She learned Sandra was dead from a staff member. The defense built Sandra a reason. A 2017 journal entry. The Zoloft black-box warning. About two dollars in her account. Sandra’s doctor had one answer: “She’s more likely to commit suicide if she’s left untreated.” Meanwhile Sandra had ordered custom onesies for a Valentine’s Day baby announcement. The one shown to the jury said “made with love.” She asked a friend she’d known since second grade to take pictures on February 13. The judge sent the jury home on it. Eight days after Sandra Birchmore died, he searched whether consent can be revoked in Massachusetts and whether deleted iMessages are recoverable through Cellebrite. The FBI examiner laid out the digital timeline from the night of February 1st: Sandra's phone captured six steps at 9:10 PM, locked at 9:13, moved eight more steps at 9:40, then went permanently still.
