The plan she described was great, but the advertisement featured a lazy white guy as the stereotypical representation of a welfare recipient, even though that is the group least likely to receive aid. Things are not looking great for Vivek Ramaswamy. Two polls released this week put Democrat Amy Acton ahead in the Ohio governor’s race. Marist has Acton leading 50% to 44% among registered voters, while a Suffolk poll has her ahead 50% to 41% among likely voters. Another survey has Ramaswamy narrowly ahead, so the race is hardly settled. But Ohio, a state Donald Trump carried comfortably in 2024, should not be producing this kind of anxiety for Republicans. Some of the explanation is national. Midterms punish incumbent parties. Trump’s approval has tanked, the war with Iran is unpopular, fuel prices have surged, and voters remain angry about affordability. Republicans still control Congress, but they have struggled to turn that control into accomplishments voters can see and feel. Ramaswamy presents an additional problem, one the party created for itself. All human institutions, customs, traditions, and ways of being originate to serve the needs of specific peoples. The collective experiences, struggles, and beliefs of a tribe create a pattern of being, or a code, that organically rises to meet their specific challenges and perpetuate their way of life. These institutions and systems are territorialized, meaning they are deeply embedded in the specific cultural context of the tribe and serve its unique needs. But the modern world is breaking those systems apart and creating new versions that only serve their own ends. The center-left academic Robert Putnam is well known for his research on social cohesion, but his research led to a discovery that he suppressed for years. When Putnam finally came forward with his data, he revealed that diversity has negative impact across almost all domains of social cohesion. People in diverse societies trust the government less, have fewer friends, participate less in civic organizations, and spend more time at home watching television. Over the last few decades, many industries discovered they could grow their customer base and profits by selling a cheaper, inferior version of their product while degrading the experience for everyone. Air travel and theme parks are obvious examples. Both learned that the advantages of scale could outweigh the obligation to deliver a high-quality experience. That philosophy did not remain in the realm of economics. It spread slowly but surely into American public life. The United States government increasingly treats the country the same way: expand the customer base, maximize throughput, then sell people a tiered version of the American experience as the baseline crumbles. Texas GOP candidate Bo French ignited a furious debate on the nature of American identity after posting a photo of a University of Texas game that showed one section of the stands dominated by foreigners. The mass migration of Indians into Texas has created a cultural shift that many residents find unsettling. Democrats rushed to accuse the candidate of racism, and they were joined by many Texas Republicans, but French stood firm. As Republicans head toward what looks like a perilous midterm election, affordability is on everyone’s lips. The Biden administration never convinced voters that it had brought food and housing costs under control. Some Republicans have tried to pretend the problem does not exist; others have acknowledged it without making meaningful progress. Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump made choices that worsened the pressure, from expanding federal spending to deepening costly foreign commitments. Neither party has a durable solution. The Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026, and debt held by the public now tops 101% of GDP. Spending and inflation are not accidents at the edge of mass democracy. Many Americans have heard the "melting pot" analogy used to explain the nature of our country's identity, but they don't know that term is relatively new. For most of the nation's history, the "Anglo-assimilation model" was considered the standard. Immigrants could come from all over Europe, but they were expected to conform to a predominantly British culture. The latest jobs report showed that 98% of new jobs in the month of August went to women, along with most of the raises and promotions. President Trump and other GOP politicians praised the news as a victory for women, but the implications for marriage in the U.S. are staggering. Women do not marry unemployed men, and they do not marry men who make less than they do. The Trump administration recently revealed it is drafting a proposal, championed by Vice President JD Vance, to change how the government distributes money already earmarked for child care. The plan would tap the roughly $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund and make some of that money available to married couples with a stay-at-home parent. No new appropriation is involved. After months of conservative outrage over fraud and abuse in child care programs, you might expect the Right to welcome a proposal that gives families another option. Instead, establishment conservatives attacked Vance with the usual charge: socialism.
