Trump Seeks to Boost Iowa Republicans, Musk Midterm Giving Tops $445 Million
2026/10/23
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) President Trump traveled to Iowa on Thursday to boost Ashley Hinson, the Republican Senate candidate locked in a tight race with Democrat Josh Turek. Trump’s visit is the first of two he is expected to make to the state before Election Day on November 3rd. After reliably voting Republican for the past decade, Iowa has become competitive territory once again thanks to high fertilizer and fuel costs wrought by Trump’s war on Iran and shrinking export markets for farmers due to his tariffs.2) With a fresh infusion of cash to his super political action committee in the first two weeks of October, Elon Musk has now given more than $445 million in the current election cycle and become one of the biggest-ever contributors to such groups. The world’s richest person put $77 million into America PAC, Federal Election Commission filings show, in an effort to elect Republicans in November midterm contests.3) Stocks steadied at the start of the European session, offering global investors some respite after a rout in the artificial intelligence trade, while further gains in oil prices kept sentiment cautious. Meantime, a gauge of the inverse relationship between US government bonds and AI-focused stocks has strengthened to levels last seen a year ago. It’s a sign the deepening tech selloff is sending investors back into bonds for safety, reviving a haven role that had faded as inflation worries and higher interest rates weighed on Treasuries. Midterms Enter Final Stretch, US Pulls Some Saudi Diplomats
2026/10/22
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) President Trump returned to South Carolina on Wednesday to bolster Darline Graham, whose campaign for a 6-year US Senate term representing the conservative state has become unexpectedly tight ahead of US midterm elections on November 3rd. Elsewhere, final debates were held in two of tighest Senate contests - Michigan and Kansas. Meantime, the Senate contest in the historically Republican state of Mississippi is drawing fresh attention in the final stretch of the election cycle, with Trump planning a rally to boost the GOP candidate and control of the chamber.2) The US ordered some diplomats and their families to leave Saudi Arabia because of the threat from Houthi militants, as the Iran-backed group carried out more strikes from Yemen. At least four people were killed by attacks on an Aramco oil site and an eastern airport on Wednesday. The moves come as tensions escalate across the Middle East, with the US and Israel drawing up plans for renewed strikes on the Islamic Republic, according to the New York Times, and Tehran saying it struck more tankers going through the Strait of Hormuz.3) Barclays Plc said it’s cutting 5,000 jobs, or about 5% of total headcount, as part of a “technology-enabled” effort to reduce costs as it adopts artificial intelligence across the bank. The bank reported third-quarter earnings Thursday that missed several key estimates. Barclays’ bond traders suffered the biggest slump on Wall Street during the quarter, taking the shine off a strong performance on the equities desk. Starlink Ukraine Controversy; SpaceX and Tesla Study Merger
2026/10/21
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) A recent slowdown of the SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system that enables Ukraine to fend off deadly Russian aerial assaults came from an order by Elon Musk, the company’s chief executive officer, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Musk restricted the speed of Ukraine’s access to the satellite system, which hampered the ability of the country’s drones to carry out defensive and offensive missions, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed American officials and others. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have been carrying out relentless attacks on Ukraine, including striking civilian targets.2) Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the Trump administration’s support for Ukraine, saying the nation “would not exist” without US backing. “If it were not for the assistance of the United States, including under the Trump administration, there would be no Ukraine right now,” Rubio told reporters on Wednesday during a visit to India. “Ukraine as a sovereign state would not exist.” Rubio made the remarks while responding to questions about a Wall Street Journal report that said Elon Musk, chief executive officer of SpaceX, ordered a recent slowdown of the Starlink satellite system that helps Ukraine to fend off deadly Russian aerial assaults.3) Elon Musk openly endorsed the prospect of combining SpaceX with Tesla Inc., in what would be the biggest-ever corporate merger uniting assets from electric cars to AI data centers to rocket and satellite capabilities. The world’s richest man said Tuesday the boards of both companies had formed special committees of independent directors to consider the idea of a combination. “There’s a lot of merit to combining the companies,” Musk said on a conference call after SpaceX announced earnings that beat estimates. Zelenskyy-Trump War Of Words, President Uses Antisemitic Slur
2026/10/20
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is traveling to Norway for new peace talks as US pressure mounts for concessions from Kyiv to reach a deal with Russia. US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to take part in the talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, while Jared Kushner will participate online. Relations between President Trump and Zelenskyy have soured, with Trump criticizing Zelenskyy and saying he should have settled the war a long time ago.2) President Trump used an antisemitic term during a rally in Kansas as he defended Republican Senator Roger Marshall, saying Marshall was portrayed as "some kind of a Shylock-type guy." Trump said Marshall had received a "bum rap" and was mandated by law to request money owed from patients, and that if he didn't make these requests, he would be breaking the law. Trump faced criticism for using the term, which has long been considered antisemitic, and has a history of using stereotypes about Jewish people, including telling a gathering of the Republican Jewish Committee that they wanted to "control" politicians.3) A measure of French bond risk breached a key level on Tuesday, underscoring the challenges facing the government as it struggles to tame the budget deficit and defuse cost-of-living protests. The extra yield investors demand to hold French 10-year bonds over safer German debt rose two basis points to 150 basis points, a closely watched level that was last seen on Oct. 5. The spread hit a peak of 159 basis points earlier this month as political and fiscal pressures intensified, prompting many investors to liquidate their positions in the nation’s debt. Putin Wants Summit with US and China; Protests Flare Across Europe
2026/10/19
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes.   On today's podcast:   1) Russia’s Vladimir Putin proposed a meeting with President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping next month to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.Trump’s recent overtures to Putin, including a deal on diesel exports and a decision to waive a new sanctions law, have been widely criticized by Ukraine and its allies in Europe and Washington.   2) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Donald Trump of trying to pressure Kyiv into surrendering to Russia, escalating a week-long row with the US president. In an interview with Bloomberg in Kyiv, Zelenskyy also offered a new proposal to accede to Trump’s request to stop targeting Russian refineries, which was aimed at combating high diesel prices, in exchange for deliveries of more Patriot air-defense missiles.   3) The violence that rocked France this weekend as cost-of-living protests degenerated into looting and burning nationwide is raising alert levels across Europe, where elections will be held in at least half a dozen countries next year. While France has a long history of street demonstrations, the intensity of attacks on public buildings, shops and restaurants raised fears of repeat action during a campaign featuring both the far left and far right. President Emmanuel Macron promised a “hard line,” yet even as he made a televised address Sunday night, tensions were still flaring between rioters and police in Paris. Warsh Boosts Rate Hold Expectations; Midterm Debates Ramp Up Nationwide
2026/10/16
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh did nothing to dispel market expectations that the US central bank will hold interest rates steady when it meets at the end of the month. In a moderated discussion Friday morning in Bangkok at the International Monetary Fund’s annual meetings, Warsh made no remarks on monetary policy or his outlook for the US economy, apart from reiterating that the Fed will deliver price stability.2) Republican Senator Dan Sullivan emphasized where he differs from Donald Trump, just days after the president headlined an Alaska rally for his embattled reelection campaign. At a debate Thursday with Democratic challenger Mary Peltola, Sullivan distanced himself from Trump on issues including Ukraine and healthcare, showing how even Republicans with strong White House ties are navigating voter dissatisfaction with some administration policies.3) President Donald Trump declined to rule out using a weapon known as the “Mother of all Bombs” on Iran after the US midterm elections.“Well the mother of all bombs is not nuclear,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax broadcast on Thursday night. “It’s not nuclear at all, just an extremely large bomb. It’s like a tiny nuclear bomb. But the mother of all bombs is one big bomb, but it’s not nuclear,” Trump said. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Zelenskyy Defies Trump; Leakers 'Should Be Shot' Says President
2026/10/15
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered attacks on Russian oil refineries to resume in a spiraling confrontation with Donald Trump over restrictions on US intelligence assistance.Zelenskyy said he’s ending a three-day pause on strikes in response to the US president’s call last week for an “energy ceasefire” after he accused Trump and billionaire Elon Musk of restraining Kyiv’s ability to defend itself against Russian missile and drone attacks.2) President Donald Trump called for executing individuals who leak information to the media during a campaign rally as he railed against what he cast as critical coverage of the war in Iran. “In my opinion, leakers should be shot. They should be shot. In the old days, we used to shoot leakers,” Trump said at the campaign event in Bullhead City, Arizona. “Leakers should be dealt with very, very strongly. They’re real. To me, they’re the scum of the earth.”3) Global equities fell as a selloff in the artificial-intelligence trade gathered speed and pushed investors toward the safety of bonds.S&P 500 futures were down 0.3% while Nasdaq 100 contracts retreated 1.2%. The leg lower came as Anthropic PBC disclosed $16.8 billion in third-quarter growth to prospective investors, figures that suggested the pace of growth had slowed even as it remained robust. An exchange-traded fund tracking chipmakers signaled the sector’s six-day selloff was set to continue. CoreWeave Inc. fell a further 6% in premarket trading after Wednesday’s 15% rout when its bonds also dropped to levels that typically show distress. Midterm Debates Heat Up; Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire in Limbo
2026/10/14
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes.   On today's podcast:   1) A series of Midterm debates took place Tuesday night across the country, with Election Day just weeks away. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul faced off with her Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman. Senate debates took place in Massachusetts, Maine, Georgia, and Iowa. Along with partisan barbs, the economy was a central theme across all of the conversations, and it comes as investors get a slew of economic news this week and this morning with the September CPI due out.   2) Russia said it attacked Ukrainian electricity plants in a "massive strike" overnight, targeting six thermal plants and a substation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strike was "entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale" and targeted "the very infrastructure covered by the ceasefire announced by the American President." Three people were killed and 25 injured in the attack, which also caused water and power cuts in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi.   3) An employee at OpenAI, Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested and charged with using a hidden recording device in one of the company's San Francisco offices. The device was discovered by OpenAI's security team on Sept. 30 in an executive conference room, and Alfozan is alleged to have placed it there around Sept. 28. OpenAI said it has no indications that Alfozan inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data, and that the investigation is still ongoing. Trump Dismisses Iran Aid Concerns; Houthis Continue Saudi Attacks
2026/10/13
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes.   On today's podcast:   1) President Trump dismissed concerns that Russia and China might be helping Iran in its war with the US, adding that the two countries would have “too much to lose” in aiding the Islamic Republic. China and Russia have maintained close ties with Iran for decades but have denied providing arms assistance to Tehran in its conflict with the US that began in late February. There have, however, been reports of military cooperation. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese entities shipped components used in Iran’s drones and missiles, while US officials linked satellite imagery obtained from Chinese sources to an Iranian strike that killed three American troops.   2) Saudi Arabia intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Yemen's Houthis, targeting Riyadh and Khamis Mushait. The attacks pose a challenge to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's efforts to transform the kingdom's economy, with recent strikes suspending operations at Riyadh's main airport. The US is assisting Riyadh with intelligence and aerial refueling, and US President Donald Trump said he is considering joining in the fight against the Iran-backed militant group.   3) Global investors chasing the AI-powered equity rally are the most exposed to technology stocks since the rebound from the Covid pandemic six years ago, according to a poll by Bank of America Corp. The proportion of fund managers who are overweight the tech sector has risen to 37% from 30% last month, the highest since August 2020, the survey shows. About 45% of respondents agreed that there will be an AI bubble in 2027, with 42% saying no.Artificial intelligence has been the hottest trade in equities, driving gains of almost 120% in the S&P 500 Index during a four-year bull run. But some of the enthusiasm around AI is fading as investors question whether returns will justify the heavy spending on the technology. Respondents in the October BofA survey said global semiconductor stocks were the market’s most crowded trade.Eric Mollo See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Deadly Houthi Strike Raises War Risks; Judge Halts Trump TV Ads
2026/10/12
Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes.   On today's podcast:   1) Houthi militants targeted airports across Saudi Arabia, killing at least 14 people and wounding hundreds in two separate incidents at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The Saudi-led military coalition intercepted missiles and drones aimed at the kingdom overnight, including areas that are home to some of Saudi Arabia’s key oil and gas facilities, and vowed a “decisive” response. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the kingdom remained committed to providing energy security, stating “There is no way that somebody will break our back. We are like a phoenix. We come out of the ashes all the time and every time.”   2) A federal judge in New York ordered the Trump administration to stop running taxpayer-funded television ads and to halt any payments of public money related to airing them. The judge wrote that the challengers had shown they’d suffer “irreparable harm” without immediate court action and that a temporary halt “serves the public interest." The challengers accused the White House of violating a congressional prohibition against using taxpayer dollars for unapproved “publicity and propaganda."   3) Ukraine will continue to respond with long-range strikes against Russia unless Moscow agrees to an energy ceasefire that still hasn’t happened, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday.Speaking via a video link at Warsaw Security Conference, the president said he learned from the media about the truce announced by US President Trump on the Truth Social platform on Sunday. Since then, Ukrainian energy infrastructure has continued to be hit by Moscow’s air strikes, according to Zelenskyy. Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t read Truth Social,” the Ukrainian president said. “If Russia doesn’t agree to energy ceasefire - we will respond.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
