Bryan Kohberger named his former lawyers in his attempt to undo the guilty plea that spared him the death penalty. He claims Anne Taylor’s team misled him about prison conditions and withheld evidence he believes would have changed his decision. If a hearing eventually happens, those claims could be tested against records of the plea discussions. Kohberger alleges ineffective assistance from Taylor, Elisa Massoth and Bicka Barlow. Lawyers are generally required to protect private client communications. Prosecutor Bill Thompson summarized DNA evidence involving a knife sheath, records of a Ka-Bar knife purchase, cell-phone connections and a white Hyundai Elantra shown on surveillance. Kohberger’s attorneys would have been able to contest the state’s interpretation at trial. Instead, the plea ended that trial and removed the death penalty under the agreement. The October 14 court order canceled future hearings while the petition and prosecution’s effort to dismiss it remain unresolved. Bryan Kohberger wants another chance to challenge the guilty plea that sent him to prison for life. His new lawyer also wants the judge who took that plea off the case. On October 14, 2026, Judge Steven Hippler removed the October 15 recusal hearing from the schedule, along with the June 2027 dates set aside for a status conference and possible hearing on Kohberger's claims. Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to killing Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. He told Hippler he was guilty and later received four consecutive life sentences. The post-conviction petition he filed in 2026 alleges his former attorneys provided ineffective assistance and that the plea was not freely made. Prosecutors dispute his claims and seek dismissal without a hearing. Greg Rauch, the attorney representing him in the challenge, argues Hippler's own words are a problem. At sentencing, the judge sharply condemned Kohberger, and Rauch says those remarks could impair an objective assessment of Kohberger's credibility. He also points to a refused request for more time shortly before the plea. His motion seeks disqualification and a transfer of the proceedings back to Latah County. Hippler's new calendar does not decide the request to remove him. It gives Kohberger until January 13, 2027, to file an amended petition and sets a July 7 deadline for evidence gathering. Kohberger's team was set to argue that Judge Hippler should be removed from the post-conviction case. Hippler vacated the hearing the night before  —  and took every other date with it. Bryan Kohberger’s post-conviction fight now turns in part on what Judge Steven Hippler knew before accepting the plea that ended the University of Idaho murder case without a trial. A May 20, 2025 defense filing told Hippler that Kohberger was having difficulty comprehending adverse rulings and understanding their effect on the case as a whole.  Anne Taylor’s team did not tell the court Kohberger was legally incompetent. The lawyers expressly denied that conclusion. They wanted more time to investigate his ability to rationally assess the case, make consequential choices, and receive expert help communicating about a possible resolution. Hippler denied the continuance on June 26. Kohberger pleaded guilty six days later.  At the July 2 hearing, Kohberger admitted killing Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. He also pleaded guilty to burglary, told Hippler he understood the agreement, denied coercion, and said he was pleading guilty because he was guilty. He is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole plus a ten-year burglary sentence.  Kohberger now alleges ineffective assistance, pressure, false promises, and withheld evidence. One example he raised was hair from Ethan Chapin’s hand. On July 2, 2025, Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder in the killings of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin at the University of Idaho. Weeks earlier, his defense attorney Anne Taylor had filed a sealed memo telling Judge Hippler that Kohberger was struggling to rationally understand what was happening to him. She wrote that he couldn’t comprehend adverse rulings or make consequential decisions about his defense. Hippler denied Taylor’s request for more time on June 26, six days before the plea. At the hearing, Taylor told the judge she was satisfied she’d had enough time, and Kohberger answered every safeguard question the court put to him. The sealed memo is now public. Kohberger has filed a post-conviction petition arguing the plea should be vacated. He claims Taylor and his defense team concealed evidence and pushed him toward a deal he didn’t grasp. He specifically alleges hair evidence pointing to an unknown attacker was withheld. His own defense expert, Ruth Ballard, examined that hair and found it physically matched Ethan Chapin. Her report was completed a month before the plea deal was signed. Taylor’s team explicitly denied concluding Kohberger was incompetent, saying they needed more time to investigate. Forensic criminologist Brent Turvey, who served on Kohberger’s defense team, has said Taylor and co-counsel will need to answer “very difficult questions.” Disqualification arguments are set for October 15. Bryan Kohberger's post-conviction case now includes a document the public did not have when he pleaded guilty. The newly unsealed filing says his former defense lawyers told Judge Steven Hippler that Kohberger was having trouble rationally processing adverse rulings and understanding how those rulings changed the risk of going to trial.  His lawyers asked for additional time and expert assistance so they could communicate with him about major case decisions, including whether to testify or resolve the case with a plea. They expressly denied that Kohberger was legally incompetent. Hippler denied the additional time, and six days later Kohberger admitted guilt to four first-degree murders and burglary.  Kohberger's new attorney Greg Rauch is now using that sequence as part of a broader effort to remove Hippler from the post-conviction case and challenge the plea. Rauch says the timeline does not automatically prove the plea was invalid. His argument is that it raises a factual issue about whether Kohberger had enough time and expert assistance to meaningfully participate in the decision.  Kohberger's family has now entered that fight publicly. His parents and sisters say they support his effort to obtain post-conviction relief and want the full truth aired through a trial. Bryan Kohberger says his guilty plea was coerced while investigators warn that unredacted crime-scene photographs from the University of Idaho murders were allegedly passed to journalists and online creators. The plea challenge and the photo leak are separate legal problems, but both now center on access to information and what happened after that access was granted.  A YouTube creator with more than 9,000 subscribers said she possessed unredacted images and told followers she was waiting to obtain more. On September 15, 2026, the Latah County Prosecutor's Office, Moscow Police and Idaho State Police said sensitive material had allegedly come from an unknown source and urged against further distribution.  The state had already limited public release. Judge Megan Marshall ordered the City of Moscow to black out bodies and immediately surrounding blood. Idaho State Police then released nearly 2,800 crime-scene images in January 2026 and removed them the same day.  The Goncalves family said the images were live by the end of a 12-minute warning call. Senate Bill 1250 later exempted death-investigation photographs from public disclosure.  Kohberger's family entered the public fight on September 17 and said it supports his effort to withdraw the plea. His petition alleges ineffective counsel, false promises, threats tied to prison conditions and failures to disclose evidence he believes supports innocence. His plea transcript cuts directly across those allegations. Kohberger told Judge Steven Hippler that no one threatened him, no one promised anything beyond the agreement, no one told him to lie, and he was pleading guilty freely because he was guilty.  The petition also points to hair from Ethan Chapin's right hand. Bryan Kohberger's family has entered the fight. In a statement exclusive to ABC News, the Kohbergers declared their full support for Bryan's bid to withdraw his guilty plea in the murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. They said they want "the complete and unvarnished truth" told through a proper trial. Kohberger himself claimed in his petition that his former attorneys coerced him into confessing falsely. He's written that his parents and sisters were present for many of the discussions with his legal team before the plea.
