The science of play with Annette Henderson
2026/02/06
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda discuss what’s really happening in your child’s brain when they play. They’re joined by Dr Annette Henderson, a New Zealand child development expert and Professor at the University of Auckland. Specialising in how children develop communication, cooperation, and social understanding, Annette brings a deeply researched and reassuring perspective on why play is central to children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. She also offers easy tips for making the most of even a little bit of playtime with your kids, no matter how fast you’re juggling! They explore how children’s brains are shaped through everyday play experiences, from building and imagining to rough-and-tumble and solitary play. Annette explains how play supports problem-solving, language development, emotional regulation, empathy, and executive functioning. This conversation also tackles the things parents can worry most about:– Why children gravitate toward certain types of play– How preferences can be influenced by environment and experience– How to support play without over-directing– How to praise in ways that build confidence and curiosity Whether you’re sitting on the floor building with LEGO® bricks, watching your child disappear into their imagination, or simply being there, ‘playing rock’, this episode will help you understand what actually matters and why you’re probably better at playing than you think. Happy listening! This episode has been proudly brought to you by the LEGO® Group. SHE BUILT THAT – LEGO sets for creative storytellers. Best bits: Hamish Blake – “It’s just the time when your world mattered.”
2026/02/05
In this mini-episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah share highlights from their chat with podcaster, presenter and comedian, Hamish Blake. This Best Bits episode is for anyone who’s ever wondered what their kids will actually remember about growing up, and hope it’s the good stuff! Hamish talks about presence, rituals, and why parenting isn’t about the activity, the advice, or getting it “right” but about showing up so your child feels like their world matters. From shared rituals and side-by-side time, to letting kids lead and playing the long game so they come to you later when it really counts, this conversation is warm, funny, and casually profound. Boop-boop, The Beckhams, and Matty gets scammed
2026/01/30
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda cover a veritable feast of topics from the big mistake behind the Beckhams' family feud, the devastating decline of the roadside boop-boop, and the time Matilda and Art got properly and painfully scammed.  They have teenagers on the brink of independence, dogs on the brink of demise, and households descending into full renovation chaos, soon to be followed by Matty's sensibilities ...  Hannah lifts the lid on caravan politics, there's a firm toilet brush advisory, and the girls deliver a little cultural commentary, you know, for balance. Galloping forth, Santa’s Ghetto, and petty revenge!
2026/01/23
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are ready to swing open the stable door, be slapped on the rumps, and gallop forth into 2026 for the year of the horse! They share their theme words for the year, vaguely remember what they promised themselves for the previous year, and are off on an ambitious trajectory, considering they're but a few weeks in. Slightly overwhelmed by being in a real-life studio, they recover to tidy up a bit of salutations housekeeping, Matty shares her first rant for the year, and a new cosy crime investigation is launched. What do you have to say for yourselves Warkworth??? (Any tips, leads, suspects or evidence to report? Email [email protected] or DM us immediately.)  Hannah high-fives a fellow butt-hose enthusiast and shares a 'chef's kiss' listener story of her petty revenge. As always, thanks for being here. Fan Favourite Encore: Dr Stacy Sims
2026/01/16
In this fan favourite episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by internationally renowned exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr Stacy Sims — a trailblazer on a mission to revolutionise how women train, eat, and perform. Known for her viral TED Talk “Women Are Not Small Men”, bestselling book Roar, and over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Stacy has dedicated her career to closing the gender gap in sports science. In this conversation, she dives into the often-overlooked physiological and emotional challenges girls face during puberty — challenges that are too often misunderstood or ignored, causing many to lose confidence and drop out of sport. With her new course NEXT GEN, Stacy is focused on educating coaches and parents to better support developing girls. She explores how puberty impacts performance, confidence, and injury risk, and why it’s crucial to rethink how we train and talk to our daughters. From the damaging effects of language like “girl pushups” and “sissy squats,” to the ripple effects of diet culture and uniform design, Stacy highlights the changes we need to make — and how to do it. This episode is a rallying cry to shift the culture around girls’ health, sport, and self-image — and to give them the tools, language, and support they deserve. Expecting for the unsuspecting with Jacob Dawson
2026/01/09
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah chat with artist and filmmaker, Jacob Dawson, who flips the script and interviews the girls. So, what happens when a soon-to-be dad realises 2026 is officially ‘The Year of the Baby’… and decides to crowdsource his entire parenting education from two women who have conceived, birthed, and (at time of recording) successfully retained their children? Jacob everything he didn’t know he needed to know about conception, pregnancy, birth, and how not to completely lose the plot along the way. From fertile windows and freezer meals to pregnancy naps, hypnobirthing, and why vacuuming might be the sexiest pre-conception move of all, nothing is off limits. This is Expecting 101 for the blissfully naive, the quietly panicking, and anyone who enjoys learning about babies via equal parts warmth, wisdom, and absolute nonsense. No medical advice. Free yourself from the elf!
2025/12/26
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah make a final bid for efficiency to cover all the talking points that got lost in favour of alluring tangents. They unpack Hannah’s devastation of being emotionally manipulated by AI dog videos, debate whether a listener’s bush poo was a crime of public indecency or an approved solution, and offer inspiration for ridding yourself of Elf on a Shelf. Hannah’s driving out the neighbours and getting duped by the false promises of petty chores, while Matty is crying real, bona fide, genuine human tears. A huge thank you for all of your love, support and being part of the show for 2025! Do you wanna feel my foibles?
2025/12/19
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda get bum-clenchingly honest about relationships, emotional triggers, fear of failure, and the disappointing truth that doing “the work” doesn’t mean you’re finally “fixed”... (Wait ... what?!) It’s Matty’s turn to talk Hannah off the ledge this week! They talk hyper-vigilance, catching petty old patterns resurfacing, the pressure to get relationships right, and why knowing too much can sometimes make things harder. From breadcrumb conversations to the immensity of merging lives, they take a confronting look at the messy middle of building healthy relationships amongst an ocean of quirks, failings, foibles and feelings. Just when they thought they had it all together!  Earnest. Relatable. Slightly confronting. Very Untidy. In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are back together after Hannah’s pilgrimage in India to bring you a conversation covering all the HARD HITTING NEWS. Your Untidy chat is characterised by their consistency in offering you zero structure, maximum honesty, accidental wisdom, and altogether too much information, whether you wanted a discourse on butt hoses and glass bathrooms or not. Sex Ed Rescue with Cath Hakanson
2025/12/05
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah chat with the unshockable Cath Hakanson, a globally renowned sex educator and founder of Sex Ed Rescue, Sex Ed Shop, and the podcast Sex Ed for Tween Parents. Cath has helped over a million parents around the world talk to their kids about sex, bodies, gender, and relationships. Her mission is to make these conversations less cringey, more confident, and just a normal part of growing up. Cath unpacks how to move from the early “naming body parts” phase into the next chapter: helping tweens and teens navigate puberty, privacy, porn, pleasure, consent, and that glorious age where everything is “weird and embarrassing.” Cath’s advice is simple but golden: focus on tiny, everyday chats, drop the shame, and let your kids know you’re a safe person to ask anything. Because if they can talk to you about sex, they can talk to you about anything. Whether you’re at the start of the puberty rollercoaster or halfway up the climb, this conversation will leave you feeling better equipped, less squeamish, and seeing sausages in a whole new light. Do other people find this hard?
2025/11/28
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah discuss an experience every parent will relate to. When you love your kids to bits, but they’re pushing you to the edge of your coping capacity.   Hannah and Matilda unpack those big parenting moments: the ones that make you question if anyone else’s kids are losing it like this, or if it’s just yours, and what does that mean about you as a parent? They talk about handling everyone’s explosive emotions, the guilt and grief that comes with it, and how to hold space for both. There’s wisdom, laughter, and a bit of ugly-toilet-cry catharsis. From smashed rocks and frazzled nerves, to honesty, empathy, and the radical act of letting your tears come out, this episode is a reminder that love doesn’t need to look perfect, but it’s always doing its best. Plus, Hannah remembers holding a bus hostage in Peru, and decides to carry over ‘air fryer’ news for another time ...  Take care out there, people. Lie the f*ck down with Melody Thomas
2025/11/21
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by friend of the show, former co-producer, and fellow podcaster Melody Thomas. Melody is the co-creator and host of The Good Sex Project podcast and BANG!, among many other great shows. She joins the girls in bed, for a conversation about the radical act of lying the f*ck down.   Prompted by Melody’s viral Substack essay The Radical Act of Lying the F** Down, the trio explore what it means to step off the treadmill of productivity and listen to your body before it breaks. They talk about guilt, capitalism, motherhood, and why stopping to rest and nest can feel both terrifying and liberating. From the sign that read “Humans Resting: Do Not Disturb” above a Houghton Bay lodge, to rediscovering creativity through stillness, this conversation is both a permission slip and a challenge: an invitation to reclaim rest not as indulgence, but as a necessity and as resistance. “She went down like a dying swan”
2025/11/14
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are dealing with pet perils as visits to the vet become a family affair for Hannah, and Matty takes to the local community page in a desperate search for missing Buster. They address the present day question of what on earth is ‘6-7’? Not just breaking millennial brains nationwide, it’s even making a boomer out of ChatGPT. Have they all reached the age of irrelevancy? Matilda relives a school-gate parenting quandary, and Hannah gives her latest Medical Corner update. The man, the myth, the midnight messages
2025/11/07
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah pick up where they left off after Hannah rediscovers the long-lost screenshots from ‘Gareth the Weird Tinder Guy’ and his post-date text barrage. She reads them aloud to take Matty on a journey from polite ‘go wells’ to a spectacular ‘f*ck this’ emotional implosion. Matilda shares her own encounter with an unhinged Facebook messenger whose rants somehow didn’t “violate community standards,” and the pair ponder how rejection, the internet, and a few too many can send people right off the rails. The girls swap Halloween stories, debut their brand new Untidy T-shirts, and reminisce on Hannah’s Wanaka girls’ weekend that produced a full cup and a cracking ‘Car Cassettes’ playlist just for the millennials. Hannah also talks about a brand-new podcast she co-hosts with Vedic Meditation Teacher, Georgia Vavasour, called ‘Unbound’. All about finding your place in modern spirituality, Georgia helps listeners get unbound on all of the big life questions, like, relationships, astrology, manifestation, happiness, purpose, religion, consciousness and accessing your clarity. In a digestible, accessible, practical, and light-hearted way, Georgia helps listeners, (and Hannah), to help get through the bumpy road of personal growth.
