947. Run Your Own Race
2026/10/02
In this episode, Dr. Killeen uses an endurance racing lesson to explore why trying to change everything at once rarely works. You can start fast with a new system or idea, but if you burn through your energy and your team cannot sustain it, the change usually fades back to the way things were. Real change happens through repetition and patience. Instead of introducing five new systems at once, pick the most important one and commit to it for 30 days. Once it becomes a habit, build on it with the next one. Slow progress may not feel exciting at first, but over time those small changes compound into a stronger, more sustainable practice.
946. Brick by Brick
2026/10/01
Dr. Killeen shares two stories that illustrate the difference between simply doing the work and understanding what you are building. Whether it is a cathedral or a dental practice, the bigger vision matters, but so does the discipline of laying one brick at a time. For practice owners, systemizing a practice can feel overwhelming, especially when you expect big changes to happen overnight. Dr. Killeen explains why the real progress comes from defining the end goal, then steadily building toward it one process at a time. Pick one process, write it down, improve it, and keep laying bricks.
945. What's Right, Not Who's Right
2026/09/30
Dr. Killeen explores the idea that being willing to be wrong can be a powerful advantage. Dentists and practice owners are used to being the person with the right answer, but what works in one practice may not work in another. Experience can create useful patterns, but it can also make us too confident in assumptions that have not been tested in our own practice. The goal is not to prove that your decision was right. It is to find out what is actually right. He challenges you to revisit a recent decision, look at the numbers, ask your team what they have noticed, and be willing to change course based on what you learn. The real skill is caring more about what’s right than who’s right.
944. Choose Truth Over Comfort
2026/09/29
Today, Dr. Killeen explores several patterns commonly found in unhappy people and how those same habits can show up in dental practice owners. From choosing comfort over truth and avoiding situations that challenge our self-worth to resenting others’ success and confusing busyness with real progress, these patterns can quietly hold us back. Instead of looking for these traits in your team or the people around you, Dr. Killeen challenges you to look inward. Identify the pattern that sounds most like you, then intentionally practice the opposite. Choose truth over comfort, take ownership, ask the uncomfortable question, and be willing to learn.
943. What If You Hired a World-Class CEO?
2026/09/28
In today's episode, Dr. Killeen runs a thought experiment around, what would happen if you hired a world-class CEO to run your dental practice? What would they change? What risks would they take? As Dr. Killeen ponders this philosophical question, he will take you through the thought-experiment and help you realize that these decisions are one you can make in your own practice as well.
942. The Problems We Solve
2026/09/25
Dr. Killeen explores the idea that the value of a company is the sum of the problems it solves. In dentistry, that goes far beyond fixing teeth. Helping an anxious patient feel comfortable, finding an appointment time that works for a busy parent, or helping a team member handle a difficult situation are all problems worth solving. It is easy to focus on production, new patients, and other numbers, but those are often the result of something deeper: identifying what is difficult for people and finding better ways to solve it. Dr. Killeen shares examples from Capital Dental and challenges you to identify five problems your practice can solve, then pick one to start working on this week.
941. Bring the Energy
2026/09/24
Dr. Killeen explores the idea that opportunities expand or shrink in proportion to our enthusiasm. Rather than waiting for an exciting opportunity to appear, he suggests bringing energy and genuine interest to the ordinary moments already in front of us. In a dental practice, a routine hygiene appointment can become an opportunity for deeper connection and treatment planning when the hygienist is engaged and enthusiastic. The same is true for owners, whose energy sets the tone for the entire team. Lukewarm effort often leads to lukewarm results, while a little extra energy and follow-through can create meaningful momentum.
940. Part of the Solution
2026/09/23
Today, Dr. Killeen explores Jim Rohn’s reminder that much of life comes down to remaining part of the solution rather than becoming part of the problem. In any practice, challenges are inevitable, but the way we respond can either move things forward or add to the frustration. He discusses how strong team members bring a problem-solving mindset, while leaders must model that same attitude from the top. The goal is not to avoid complaints or difficult conversations, but to redirect them toward action, accountability, and improvement.
939. Handling Hardship
2026/09/22
Dr. Killeen explores Charlie Munger’s advice to assume life will be difficult, then ask whether you can handle what comes. Drawing on Munger and the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, he discusses how hardship is inevitable, but our response to it remains within our control. For dentists, business owners, and anyone building something meaningful, setbacks are part of the process. The question is not whether we will face difficult blows, but whether we will allow them to break us or use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and behave in a way we can respect.
938. More Than a Milestone
2026/09/21
Dr. Killeen reflects on a Cambridge graduate’s realization that his doctoral ceremony was far more than a formality. Surrounded by centuries of tradition, friends, and family, he discovered that certain moments do not simply mark change. They become passages that alter how we see ourselves and the lives we are building. It is easy to rush past milestones in our practices and personal lives while focusing on what comes next. This is a reminder to pause, recognize the significance of these thresholds, and be fully present for them. Some moments only have the power to change us if we slow down long enough to let them.
937. How Do They Need Help?
2026/09/18
Dr. Killeen shares a story about a family whose newborn spent weeks in the NICU. Although friends generously brought flowers, meals, and food for the house, the family was rarely home to use them. What they really needed was something much simpler: takeout gift cards and the flexibility to grab a meal at the hospital. The story captures the heart of the core value “Have Each Other’s Backs.” Real support begins by asking what someone actually needs, rather than offering what is easiest or most convenient to give. Dr. Killeen also explores how strong teams balance compassion with accountability by both catching people when they fall and telling them the truth so they can improve.
936. The Doorman Fallacy
2026/09/17
Dr. Killeen shares a story from Rory Sutherland’s Alchemy about a hotel that replaces its doorman with an automatic sliding door to save money. While the change looks efficient on paper, the hotel loses countless small but meaningful services that the spreadsheet never measured. The story offers a valuable lesson about ego, humility, and leadership. Before making a decision, ask, “What am I not seeing here?” Dr. Killeen explores how being hungry to grow, humble enough to keep learning, and confident enough to commit can lead to better decisions and stronger teams.
935. What Are You Really Chasing?
2026/09/16
Dr. Killeen explores what money really means to us beyond the practical needs it meets. While money can provide security, freedom, and opportunity, it can also become tied to deeper questions about worth, belonging, and whether we are doing enough. He discusses why dentists can fall into the trap of constantly producing and chasing a bigger number, even when their financial needs are already met. The challenge is to recognize what money can genuinely provide, what it never can, and whether the pursuit of more is helping you build the life you actually want.
934. The Danger of Coasting
2026/09/15
Dr. Killeen shares the story of a highly successful dental practice that slowly lost momentum after its owner decided to take his foot off the gas. He explains why great practices rarely decline overnight and how small lapses in focus can quietly compound into major setbacks over time. In this episode, you'll learn why the mindset of "Always Be Improving" is essential for long-term success. Dr. Killeen discusses the difference between relying on motivation and building systems that drive continuous improvement, helping your practice keep moving forward one intentional step at a time.
933. Create Space for Great Ideas
2026/09/14
Dr. Killeen shares an insightful lesson from advertising legend David Ogilvy, who believed that the best ideas don't come from forcing them, but from creating space for them to surface. He explores why creativity often appears during a walk, a bike ride, or a quiet moment away from the desk, and why stepping back can be just as productive as pushing harder. Learn why solving your biggest clinical, business, and leadership challenges requires both focused effort and intentional rest. Discover how giving your mind time to wander can unlock fresh ideas, better decisions, and a clearer vision for your practice.
