Description

The Clearly Christian with Dr. Cy Smith podcast is designed to help to Know More about the way your children are being educated, so that you can say NO MORE to the same. Dr. Cy Smith interviews leaders in the Christian Education field in order to help you learn what is happening in our schools, and to our children. Today, after 16,000 hours of K-12 education, our kids come out of many government schools rolling their eyes at religion and showing disdain for our Christian history. Western culture is on the ropes. Kids are often bored and aimless, floundering for purpose in a system that says racial and gender identity is everything. This podcast will help you to realize that you are not alone, though many will make you feel that way. Or, it may serve to awaken you to what is happening in government education and to your family, and give you the conviction to do something about it.

Cultural Influence at University: A conversation with Dr. Rick Melson
2026/10/15
What happens in the university doesn't stay in the university. The ideas students encounter in college often follow them into their careers, families, churches, and communities. So how much influence does higher education have on American culture, and what can Christian parents and educators do about it? In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, welcomes Dr. Rick Melson, newly appointed president of Moody Bible Institute. Drawing on his experience in both secular and Christian higher education, Dr. Melson discusses how universities shape students' worldviews and why Christian education matters well beyond the classroom. Their conversation explores the influence of professors, textbooks, social media, and cultural movements on young adults. They also discuss the growing differences between generations, the importance of knowing why we believe what we believe, and the responsibility of Christian schools to prepare students to defend their faith. Takeaways — Universities Shape Culture. The ideas students learn in college influence how they think, work, and participate in society. — Worldview Matters. Every educational experience shapes how students understand truth, morality, and the world around them. — Know What You Believe and Why. Students need more than biblical knowledge; they need to understand and defend their faith. — Parents Must Stay Involved. Understanding what children are learning, including their textbooks and curriculum, is an important parental responsibility. — Education Should Form, Not Just Inform. Christian education should focus on who students are becoming, not simply what they know. — The Digital World Influences Beliefs. Social media, algorithms, and constant exposure to information contribute to the growing differences between generations. — Christians Must Engage Culture. Rather than retreat from cultural challenges, believers should be prepared to participate and influence society through a biblical worldview. Extra Credit - Reinforcing Segments of Fire: A Deeper Dive Into Christian Schools and Churches Working Together
2026/09/30
What happens when life gets difficult and the beliefs we thought were solid suddenly get tested? A worldview isn’t simply something we say we believe. It shapes how we understand suffering, truth, purpose, work and the culture around us. Without a strong foundation, it becomes easy to be pulled toward whatever explanation or ideology comes along next In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, dives deeper into teamwork and leadership and takes a closer look at why churches, Christian schools and families need to reinforce one another as they help people develop and live from a biblical worldview. Cy explains why simply identifying as a Christian does not necessarily mean someone approaches every part of life from a biblical perspective. He discusses Mansfield Christian School’s effort to return to foundational principles such as God’s sovereignty, being created in God’s image, and understanding history through creation, fall, redemption and restoration. Takeaways — A worldview is tested when life gets difficult. A biblical foundation provides a framework for understanding suffering, purpose and hope when circumstances don’t make sense. — Christian belief and biblical worldview aren’t automatically the same thing. Faith has to shape how people understand and respond to the issues they encounter in everyday life. — Churches, schools and families are stronger when they reinforce one another. Consistent biblical teaching across these influences can help young people develop convictions that last. — Sometimes returning to the basics is necessary. Foundational truths such as God’s sovereignty and humanity being created in God’s image provide a framework for understanding more complicated cultural questions. — Creation, fall, redemption and restoration provide a larger story. That framework helps Christians understand where brokenness comes from, what God is doing and where history is ultimately headed. — Christian education is intended to reach beyond graduation. The goal is to develop a worldview students can use years later when they encounter new ideas, circumstances and challenges. — There is no meaningful divide between sacred and secular work. Christians can live out their worldview as pastors, missionaries, accountants, business owners or in whatever work they are called to do. What If Christian Schools and Churches Worked Together? - A Conversation with Andrew Pacheco
2026/09/10
Faith was meant to be personal, but it was never meant to be private. A biblical worldview should influence how we work, lead, serve, raise families, respond to difficult circumstances, and engage the culture around us. But moving from belief to a faith that shapes everyday life requires intentional discipleship, biblical understanding, and the confidence to put that faith into practice. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, is joined by Andrew Pacheco, pastor at Crossroads Church and president of the Ministry Leadership Institute. They explore why biblical competence leads to missional confidence and why churches and Christian schools have an important shared role in preparing believers to live publicly from a biblical worldview. Homes, churches, and Christian schools each have an opportunity to reinforce a biblical worldview that prepares Christians to recognize truth, and to live it. When believers are deeply formed by Scripture and equipped to carry their faith into every area of life, cultural influence becomes a natural result of faithful discipleship. Takeaways — Biblical competence leads to missional confidence. The better we understand what we believe and why, the more prepared we are to live it outside the church. — Faith was meant to be personal, but never private. A biblical worldview should influence the way we work, lead, parent, serve, and engage the world around us. — Discipleship should move people from attendance to action. The goal isn't simply creating informed Christians, but forming Christians prepared to make disciples and influence others. — Knowledge alone isn't enough. Christian formation requires the head, heart, and hands—what we know, who we're becoming, and how we actually live. — A biblical worldview gives us a framework for the hard parts of life. Suffering, disappointment, competing beliefs, and cultural pressure are easier to navigate when truth is already deeply rooted. — Christian leadership belongs everywhere. The church needs strong Christian leaders, but so do businesses, schools, workplaces, communities, and every other sphere of influence. — Home, church, and school are stronger when they reinforce the same truth. When all three work together, young people repeatedly learn how to understand life through a biblical worldview. Extra Credit - Learning by Leading: A Deeper Dive into Creating a Thriving Christian School
2026/08/27
Christian schools have a mission that goes far beyond the bottom line. But without sound business practices, even the strongest mission can struggle to survive. For Christian school leaders, understanding that reality can be the difference between simply keeping the doors open and building a school positioned to serve families for generations. In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, takes a deeper look at Christian schools as educational institutions, ministries and businesses. Dr. Smith discusses the growing impact of school-choice scholarships and vouchers, and why increased funding brings increased expectations from parents. Ultimately, successful Christian school leadership is about building a sustainable organization capable of fulfilling its mission and helping transform the lives of students. Takeaways — Face reality honestly. Strong leadership begins with an accurate assessment of where your organization really stands. — Think like a CEO. Educational leaders also need to understand business, marketing, sales and organizational sustainability. — Lead with transparency. People can handle difficult news when leaders clearly explain the challenge and the path forward. — Keep the mission connected to the work. Christian education continually connects what educators do with why they are called to do it. — School choice changes expectations. More funding gives families more options—and raises the standard schools must meet. — Reinvest in excellence. Increased revenue should improve the educational experience rather than simply support the status quo. — Remember the real outcome. The ultimate measure is the transformation that takes place in students over the years they spend in your school. Creating a Thriving Christian School: A Conversation with Dr. Jason Rachels
2026/08/12
Christian schools are called to educate students, make a Kingdom impact, and operate as healthy organizations. But they can’t do any of those things if they can’t keep the doors open. Christian school leaders must focus on Christian Schools as a business, a ministry, and an educational institution. Neglect any one of those responsibilities, and the entire mission will suffer. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, talks with Dr. Jason Rachels, President of Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Calvary has grown to more than 2,500 students and 375 faculty and staff across four campuses, while Rachels has also helped create Schools United, whose annual conference now brings together thousands of Christian educators. The focus here is that Christian school leaders must understand exactly what they are leading and develop the competence to deliver academic excellence, demonstrate genuine life transformation, and operate a sustainable organization. Takeaways — Christian schools are hybrid organizations: schools, ministries, and businesses, and all three must be healthy. — A commitment to excellence has to be visible in the people you hire, the programs you offer, the facilities you provide, and the experience families receive. — Christian education's mission goes beyond academics; teachers are also ministers with an opportunity to build relationships and intentionally disciple students. — Strong peer networks help Christian school leaders and staff learn from others doing the same work and bring proven ideas back to their own schools. — Smaller schools can “punch above their weight” by sharing leadership expertise and resources with a larger school system. — Financial margin isn't separate from the mission. Creative revenue strategies can strengthen the organization and provide resources to pursue greater excellence. — Great leaders surround themselves with excellent people, maintain high standards, and are willing to make difficult personnel decisions when necessary for the students and the mission. Extra Credit - Integration vs Immersion
2026/07/29
Every philosophy, every educational model, and every decision about how we teach children begins with a starting point. Change that starting point, and everything built upon it begins to change as well. The challenge is making sure truth is the foundation from which everything else is taught. In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, expands on ideas introduced during Dr. Smith's recent interview with Roger Erdvig. He dives deeper into the difference between worldview integration and worldview immersion, why that distinction has reshaped Dr. Smith's thinking, and what it means for Christian educators who want students to see every subject through a biblical lens. Dr. Smith explains why Christian schools often struggle when they rely on curriculum written from a secular perspective and then ask teachers to add biblical truth afterward. He argues that Scripture should be the starting point for every discipline, allowing students to understand competing worldviews rather than building their education upon them. Takeaways — Worldview immersion begins with biblical truth instead of trying to add faith to a secular foundation. — Curriculum shapes the way students think long before individual lessons do. — Christian educators should teach students to recognize competing worldviews rather than adopting them. — Barna research reveals a widening gap between identifying as Christian and living with a biblical worldview. — Personal beliefs become meaningful only when they influence everyday decisions. — Pursuing virtue and serving others produces a richer life than simply pursuing happiness. — Christian education plays a vital role in preparing the next generation to think biblically. Connecting Beliefs and Behaviors: A Conversation with Roger Erdvig
2026/07/15
In today's culture that constantly shapes how we think, what we value, and how we live, knowing biblical facts is no longer enough. If the next generation is going to stand firm, they must learn to see every part of life, from history and science to work and relationships, through the lens of Scripture. You can’t just add Bible verses to lessons. It requires a completely different approach to education. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, welcomes Roger Erdvig, Director of the Center for Biblical Worldview Formation at Summit Ministries and author of Beyond Biblical Integration. Together they discuss alarming new research showing the rapid decline of biblical worldview in America and explore why Christian education may hold one of the greatest opportunities to reverse that trend. Roger challenges educators to think about who students are becoming. He explains why worldview formation is a lifelong process, why many Christian graduates still struggle to connect their faith with everyday life, and how schools often unintentionally reinforce the same compartmentalized thinking found throughout our culture. Takeaways — Information alone does not produce a biblical worldview; formation requires daily immersion. — Christian education should shape how students think before it teaches them what to think. — Every academic subject provides opportunities to reveal God's character, truth, and design. — Separating faith from everyday learning unintentionally prepares students to compartmentalize their Christianity. — Teachers must first develop their own biblical worldview if they hope to cultivate it in their students. — Preparing students for vocation means helping them understand that every calling can glorify God. — Christian schools have a unique opportunity to shape the next generation in ways no other educational system can. Extra Credit - Identity Rooted in Christ: A Deeper Dive into The Forces Driving Our Decisions
2026/06/23
How do you identify yourself? If someone says “Tell me about yourself”, where do you start? Careers, accomplishments, relationships, talents, and reputation all become part of the answer to the question, "Who am I?" The problem is that when those things change, fail, or disappear, the foundation underneath them often disappears too. In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, dives deeper into his recent conversation with Christian Leadership Coach Zachary Roberts about identity. He explains in more detail how so many people build their lives around accomplishments instead of truth, and how a biblical understanding of identity changes the way we view ourselves, our children, and the world around us. Dr. Smith challenges parents to examine their own identity before trying to shape the identity of their children. When adults place their value in performance, success, or status, that pressure often trickles down to the next generation. A healthier approach begins by understanding who we are in Christ and allowing that truth to guide both our ambitions and our relationships. Takeaways — Children often carry identity labels into adulthood, creating limitations that were never meant to define who they are. — A person can be gifted at something without making that talent the foundation of their identity. — Many adults continue searching for fulfillment because they were never given a stable source of truth on which to build their lives. — Social media magnifies identity pressure by turning personal expression into a constant cycle of evaluation and judgment. — Criticism carries extraordinary power when self-worth is based on the opinions of others. — Parents can unintentionally pass their own identity struggles to their children through expectations tied to performance and achievement. — A biblical identity provides stability because it is rooted in something greater than accomplishments, popularity, or circumstances. The Forces Driving Our Decisions: A Conversation with Zachary Roberts
2026/06/11
Even after reaching goals and checking boxes, many discover that the satisfaction is temporary. The deeper question remains: Who am I, really? God knows. He created us. All we have to do is live that out. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, welcomes leadership coach and entrepreneur Zachary Roberts for a conversation about identity, decision-making, and personal growth. Together, they explore how a biblical understanding of identity creates clarity, purpose, and confidence in both leadership and everyday life. Zachary shares how many clients come to him facing crises or ceilings of achievement, only to discover that the real issue is a question of identity. He explains how small daily decisions compound over time, why accountability matters, and how surrounding yourself with trusted voices can help you to overcome blind spots and make wiser decisions. Takeaways — Your identity is received from God, It is not created through achievement. — Finding worth in your work will always leave you searching for more. — Small daily decisions ultimately shape the course of your life. — Clarity about who you are creates confidence in where you're going. — Strong accountability helps expose blind spots and improve decision-making. — Lasting success is built through consistent habits, not quick wins. — A biblical worldview provides the foundation needed for purpose and direction. Extra Credit - Encouraging Natural Curiosity: A Deeper Dive into Kids, Curiosity and the Truth
2026/05/26
Somewhere along the way, many adults lose that sense of wonder we had when we were kids. We begin chasing answers more than curiosity itself. But maybe one of the greatest gifts we can recover is the willingness to keep learning, keep asking, and keep exploring the world God created. In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, dives deeper into his recent conversation with Mansfield Christian School teacher Josh Davis. The topic is the role of curiosity in education, why younger children naturally embrace discovery, and how Christian education helps connect learning to something deeper than grades or achievement. The discussion challenges adults not to lose that childlike desire to discover. Whether in the classroom, at work, or in everyday life, the willingness to keep learning may be one of the clearest reflections of how God designed us to think, create, and engage with the world around us. Takeaways — Children naturally connect learning with wonder and discovery — Christian education helps students understand what is true, AND why it matters — Curiosity is one of the driving forces behind learning and innovation — Students often learn best when they are allowed space to struggle and fail — The “aha moment” is powerful because it builds confidence and long-term understanding — Math and science are tools used to discover truths already established in creation — A biblical worldview gives meaning and purpose to education beyond grades and testing — Adults should continue asking questions and embracing lifelong learning — Some of society’s greatest breakthroughs come from people who refuse to stop searching for answers — Wonder, curiosity, and discovery are gifts that reflect the nature of God Chapters 00:13 Introduction 01:31The Impact of Passionate Teachers 02:37 The Curiosity of Children 04:30 The Deepest “A-Ha” Moments 08:08 Space to Fail 11:15 Rediscovering the Wonder of Youthful Curiosity Helpful Links: Josh Davis, Teacher at Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/ Dr. Cy Smith, Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/
Kids, Curiosity and the Truth: A Conversation with Joshua Davis
2026/05/12
Learning is about creating curiosity and the desire to do more learning! It’s about asking questions, trying and failing, and tying the answers back to the real world. And when those questions are grounded in biblical truth, students begin to see that faith isn’t disconnected from real life. It makes it real. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, sits down with elementary STEM educator Joshua Davis to discuss how curiosity, creativity, and biblical worldview work together inside the classroom at Mansfield Christian School. They talk about how curiosity is one of the most powerful motivators for learning and how allowing students to make mistakes often creates the greatest growth opportunities. STEM, combined with Christian education, helps students move beyond just gathering information and toward understanding how truth connects to God’s design, human dignity, and serving others. Takeaways – Curiosity is one of the strongest God-given motivators for learning and discovery – Children learn deeply when they are allowed to explore, create, and make mistakes – STEM and math naturally reveal order, design, and evidence of a Creator – Christian education connects academic subjects directly to biblical truth – Students are asking deeper questions about faith, truth, purpose, and identity at younger ages – Real-world STEM projects help students see how they can serve others through creativity and problem-solving – Parents play a critical role by encouraging questions and modeling humility, gentleness, and grace Chapters 00:13 Introduction 00:40 That A-Ha Moment 04:16 About Jerry Nelson 07:19 Curiosity as a Motivator for Children 11:46 Examples from the Classroom 22:23 Projects Kids are Curious About 27:15 Community Engagement 34:03 The Direct Impact of a Biblical Worldview 39:02 Advice for Parents to Foster Curiosity 43:03 Contact Information 43:41 Chalkboard Points Helpful Links: Joshua Davis, Teacher, Mansfield Christian School Dr. Cy Smith, Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/
Extra Credit - Activating Cultural Change: A Deeper Dive into Spiritual Engagement in Today’s Private Culture
2026/05/05
When passion fades in education, when engagement with culture feels overwhelming, and when adults begin to question whether they can actually make a difference…young people feel it. And if they don’t see conviction, purpose, and belief modeled in front of them, they’ll find it somewhere else. We can not afford to stay quiet when it comes to our faith. In this Extra Credit episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, dives deeper into his recent conversation with Dr. Cory Branham about what it really means to train young people to engage a culture that is increasingly shaped by a secular worldview, and why simply stepping back is not an option. If young people aren’t taught why human life has value, why truth matters, and why engagement is necessary, they won’t feel compelled to step in. That leads to drift. When students see authentic belief lived out, they’re drawn to it. Takeaways — Passion in education is declining, and that has real downstream impact on the next generation — A biblical worldview creates the foundation for caring, engaging, and taking action — Disengagement from culture doesn’t protect our young people. Actually, it leaves them unprepared — Technology is reshaping relationships, attention, and mental health in powerful ways — “Modeling the buy-in” is critical, as young people are drawn to authentic conviction — Students will follow belief systems that are lived out far more than those that are taught — Faith and work are not separate. Purpose is found in serving others through what you do — Influence starts small but can expand outward into broader cultural impact Chapters 00:13 Introduction 01:43 Passion in Education 04:15 Why We Need Hope 06:46 Future Ramifications of Being Idle 08:59 Modeling the Buy-IN 11:09 Engaging as Christians in the Workforce Helpful Links: Dr. Cory Branham, Teacher at Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/ Dr. Cy Smith, Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/
Spiritual Engagement in Today’s Private Culture: A Conversation with Dr. Cory Branham
2026/04/23
What happens when faith is kept quiet? In classrooms, workplaces, communities… even homes? It shrinks. Over time, what was once meant to shape everything becomes something people feel like they have to keep to themselves. The louder voices will influence the culture, making it all the more frightening if the Christian voice is kept private. In this episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School welcomes Dr. Cory Branham, a Bible teacher at Mansfield Christian School and leader of the growing Academy of Ministry and Missions program. Together, they talk about what it looks like to train students to live out a biblical worldview in a culture that treats faith as private and optional. If you agree that we can’t separate faith from life, then this episode will resonate with you. Whether it’s business, healthcare, education, or ministry…or for parents trying to raise their kids with a biblical worldview, it’s important to live out our faith in a way that others, especially our students, will see us doing it. Takeaways – Faith was never meant to stay private. It’s meant to shape how we live in public – Relevant curriculum connects biblical truth to current issues – Exposure to ministry helps students confirm and clarify their calling – Small, consistent conversations can shape long-term worldview – Students are already stepping into action at work, in school, and in their communities – There is no “sacred vs. secular” divide—every field needs strong Christian influence – Parents set the tone by modeling consistency, if not perfection – If students don’t see faith lived out, they won’t carry it forward Chapters 00:13 Introduction 00:42 Privatizing Faith 04:03 About Dr. Cory Branham 08:46 Getting Involved as a Christian 12:57 Relating Christianity to Real World Engagement 19:59 Academy of Ministry and Missions 30:35 The Sacred Secular Divide 40:30 Parental Modeling 44:38 Contact Dr. Cory Branham 47:11 Chalkboard Points Helpful Links: Dr. Cory Branham, Teacher at Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/ Dr. Cy Smith, Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/
Extra Credit - On the Same Page: A Deeper Dive into The Pursuit of Strategic Alignment
2026/04/02
You can feel it when something’s off. Not broken, not falling apart, just…not quite right. Conversations feel heavier. Decisions take longer. Small issues start showing up in bigger ways. It’s not always obvious, but underneath it all is usually the same problem—people aren’t thinking the same way anymore. In this “Extra Credit” episode of the Clearly Christian Podcast, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School takes a deeper look at their recent conversation with Andy Goodwin, principal and CEO of Covenant Christian High School about the idea of aligned thinking, why it matters so much for organizational health, and how shared beliefs and values shape culture at every level He digs into how leaders can recognize when alignment is slipping, even in large organizations where issues aren’t always visible, and challenges the idea that core values are only for messaging or branding. This podcast is essential for any organization that wants to move forward together with purpose. Takeaways – Misalignment often shows up first as patterns of “noise” – Core values must be lived daily – Alignment requires shared thinking – Core values should stay rooted but remain relevant – Every stakeholder shares responsibility for alignment – Charitable dialogue prioritizes truth and relationship together – Strong cultures are built through consistent reinforcement Chapters 00:13 — Introduction 01:41 — Realizing Misalignment 04:36 — Student Centered Core Values 06:12 — Core Values in Aligned Thinking 09:25 — Bible-Based Core Values 10:59 — Thinking Alike vs Thinking the Same 14:35 –– Conclusion Helpful Links: Dr. Andy Goodwin, Principal/CEO at Covenant Christian High School: https://covenantchristian.org/ Dr. Cy Smith, Mansfield Christian School: https://www.mcsflames.org/
In Pursuit of Strategic Alignment: A Conversation with Andy Goodwin
2026/03/10
When people see the world differently, they value different things. And when values diverge, behavior inevitably follows. Whether in schools, organizations, or families, lasting alignment begins with shaping how people think, what they believe, and ultimately what they love. In this episode of Clearly Christian, host Dr. Cy Smith, Superintendent of Mansfield Christian School, welcomes Dr. Andy Goodwin, principal and CEO of Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis. They discuss how leaders can move an organization toward deeper alignment by focusing not just on what people think, but how they think.
