A major new study challenges key evidence used to convict Lucy Letby, the former nurse serving 15 whole-life sentences for the murder and attempted murder of infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The report, authored by international experts, states that there is "no scientific justification whatsoever" for the claim that Letby deliberately poisoned babies with insulin and highlights a "very strong level of reasonable doubt" about her convictions. Professor Geoff Chase, a world-leading expert on insulin’s effects on pre-term babies, said it was "very unlikely" that lethal doses were administered, contradicting the prosecution’s case. The trial hinged on blood test results showing low blood sugar, high insulin, and low C-peptide levels. However, a detailed review of the babies’ medical records by experts in neonatology and bioengineering found that the data was "inconsistent" with insulin poisoning. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is now formally reviewing the case after a panel of 14 experts found no evidence of murder or deliberate harm. Senior Conservative MP (member of parliament) Sir David Davis has called the case "one of the major injustices of modern times." During Letby’s trial, prosecutor Nick Johnson KC (kings court) told jurors the nurse "undoubtedly" poisoned two infants eight months apart by adding synthetic insulin to their feeding bags. However, the 100-page study, authored by Chase and chemical engineering expert Helen Shannon, points out that low blood sugar is "not uncommon" in premature infants. The babies also lacked symptoms typically associated with insulin poisoning, such as seizures or heart arrhythmia. The report, citing over 250 peer-reviewed papers, criticizes the reliability of the immunoassay test used to detect insulin. Shannon stated, "There is no scientific justification whatsoever for the prosecution’s claim that there was 'no doubt that these were poisonings.'" She argued that a more forensic test should have been used. The insulin charges were crucial to Letby’s conviction, as they were considered the strongest evidence of deliberate harm. Letby’s defense lawyer, Benjamin Myers KC, told jurors he could not dispute the test results because the original blood samples had been disposed of. A CPS spokesperson defended the verdicts, stating, "Two juries and three appeal court judges have reviewed a multitude of different strands of evidence against Lucy Letby." The Court of Appeal also rejected her request for an appeal in May 2024. Lucy Letby, the British neonatal nurse previously found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others, is back in court facing charges of attempted murder involving a baby girl known as Child K. Lucy Letby, 34, who was convicted last year of multiple counts of infant murder and attempted murder at the Countess of Chester Hospital, is on trial again for the alleged attempted murder of another infant, identified only as Child K. The incident reportedly took place in February 2016 while Letby was on shift in the hospital’s neonatal unit. During the court session on Tuesday, Judge Mr. Justice Goss addressed the jury, emphasizing the importance of basing their verdict solely on the evidence presented in court. He stated, “Your task is to determine on all the evidence placed before you, and on nothing else, whether [Letby] attempted to murder another baby called (Child K) during the period when she was found to have murdered or attempted to murder other babies.” Goss added, “You will try this case, I repeat, on the evidence that is placed before you. You are the sole judges of fact. You will decide what is and what is not truthful from the evidence and the conclusions and assessment you draw from the evidence.” He also reminded the jury of the fundamental legal principle that anyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty, stating, “It is for the prosecution to prove guilt by making you sure of the accused’s guilt.” Letby was removed from her position at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2016 after senior staff grew suspicious due to a series of unexplained infant deaths and near-deaths over the previous year. Following an extensive investigation, she was arrested in July 2018. During her 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors accused Letby of heinous acts including force-feeding milk to infants, poisoning them with insulin, and injecting air into their tiny bodies. Four months after being found guilty of murdering seven infants in a British hospital, former nurse Lucy Letby has officially been removed from the nursing registry, according to reports. The Nursing and Midwifery Council took this action after her conviction in August, where she received a life sentence for her heinous crimes.    Lucy Letby, who previously worked in the neonatal ward of the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, England, has had her nursing registration revoked by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This decision comes after her conviction for the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of six others. Despite the conviction, Letby continues to assert her innocence.    In a "tick-box exercise" conducted before the hearing, Letby acknowledged the convictions but maintained her innocence regarding the allegations, stating, "I accept the fact of the convictions. However, I do not accept that I am guilty of any of the allegations." She also expressed that she remained "innocent in respect of all of the convictions."    Lucy Letby's troubles began in 2016 when she was removed from the neonatal ward following suspicions raised by senior hospital staff. It wasn't hidden in plain sight, but on crammed Post-it notes filled with her minuscule, frantic scrawls. These scribblings have become crucial evidence, offering a stark window into Letby's deeply troubled psyche.   While detectives have posited that these notes were a cryptic way for Letby to end her sinister spree, a deeper analysis reveals more. These Post-its are not a confession, nor are they simple scribbles. They provide a raw, unfiltered look into the recesses of a disturbed mind.   As a forensic psychiatrist, delving into the minds of individuals who have committed grievous crimes is not new to me. In secure prisons, tightly locked hospital wards, and courtrooms, I've encountered many who tread the dark path. But Lucy Letby is distinct.   The notes are filled with expressions that exemplify 'negative cognitions'. Phrases such as "I don't deserve Mum + Dad", "Hate myself", and "The world is better off without me" resonate with overwhelming guilt, shame, and self-hatred. The inherent contradictions in her notes, with statements like "I haven't done anything wrong" juxtaposed against confessions of her evil nature, signify a tormented soul battling her own conscience. And although these notes give us a glimpse of this internal strife, her guilt, shame, and self-awareness were evidently not potent enough to halt her murderous actions or elicit a confession during the trial.   Interspersed in these scribbles, Letby frequently mentions her cats, Tigger and Smudge. Perhaps they were her solace, beings she could control and exhibit genuine affection towards, in stark contrast to the heinous crimes she committed.   Despite these profound revelations, classifying Letby under standard psychiatric conditions remains challenging. There's little evidence in these notes that hint towards her suffering from a severe mental illness. However, signs of anxiety and depression permeate her writings. The scribbled "HELP" and "HATE", coupled with the overwhelming intensity of her notes, all point towards a deeply troubled mind.   Yet, these symptoms did not impair her daily functions. Colleagues never reported any peculiar stress or abnormal behavior in her role at the hospital. This duality in her nature, of committing unimaginable crimes while outwardly maintaining a composed façade, is haunting.   The motivations behind Letby's actions are intricate. While one might be tempted to accept her statement, "I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough to care for them", as a genuine reflection of her motives, it might just be an expression of self-pity. The actual driving forces, it appears, were the desire for control, power, and a perverse thrill in being around the grieving process. Letby's morbid need to be present during moments of overwhelming parental grief, even when the babies were not her patients, underscores a deeper, more sinister craving.   Moreover, despite her crimes, Letby doesn't align neatly with the classical traits of psychopathy. She might have lied to shield her deeds, but she didn't fabricate an alternate reality. The key differentiator here is her emotional perception. While she might cognitively understand the repercussions of her actions, emotionally, she remains detached. The suffering of others doesn't cause her pain; instead, she draws a perverse pleasure from it.   Lucy Letby is an enigma. Her behavior before her heinous acts didn't raise alarms. She was perceived as amiable, diligent, and competent. Trying to reconcile this image with the one painted by her Post-it notes is unsettling. With Letby unlikely to ever leave prison, the chances of her receiving intensive psychiatric support, leading to a potential remorse or epiphany, are slim.   In conclusion, Lucy Letby remains one of the most perplexing clinical cases ever encountered. While we might never fully grasp the intricacies of her mind, these Post-it notes serve as a chilling testament, providing the only tangible insight into her twisted psyche.
