We both enjoy a bit of social psychology and this week we're exploring a psychological theory that helps with the understanding of personal identity within different contexts, and the challenges that individuals face in their social and work lives.  Supporting a coachee in working through their situation to find the outcome they would like to see is not always as simple as exploring the options and taking the next step, when that next step might challenge who they are, or who they perceive themself to be.    In this episode we dive into Social Identity and its component parts:  Social Categorisation, Social Identification and Social Comparison. We'll explore how an awareness of the theory can help us to support a coachee in examining difficult social situations and gaining an understanding of why they might be finding them difficult.   Enjoy the podcast? We often hear the phrase, 'Coach the person, not the problem.' and we don't disagree, but often people come to coaching precisely because something's not quite right. There's a problem, a difficulty, a decision, a frustration, something they don't want to be happening. So, of course they're going to talk about that problem.  But how much time should we spend facilitating that conversation about the problem? In this episode we are exploring, 'problem Talk' and asking, 'When does talking about the problem help, and when does it, in itself, become problematic. Join us as we explore the nuances between moving through the problem talk to get to a richer conversation and being stuck on the problem roundabout, unable to take an appropriate exit.    Enjoy the podcast? The marvellous Paul Molyneux is back in conversation with Tom in this episode where we explore a little more Stoic philosophy.    We're going back to the ancient Greeks and the Stoic wisdom of Epictetus, who introduced the concept of the Dichotomy of Control, a simple but powerful way of thinking about what is for us to be concerned about and what is not for us.    The conversation expands to take a look at the role of influencing in medical leadership as we explore when it is useful to be trying your very best to influence and when it is useful to recognise that you are wasting your time, energy and emotions on something that is not your responsibility.    Join Tom and Paul on this episode of the podcast as they both share their experiences of the Dichotomy of Control and the role of influence in their lives and reflect on the wisdom of the Stoics.      Enjoy the podcast? Stakeholder Management is a term usually reserved for management and leadership training and organisational development reviews. That said, it has its uses in all sorts of scenarios and is a great tool for identifying the stakeholders in any given situation that a coachee might bring to the coaching room.    In this episode we explore the Stakeholder Allegiance Model, a tool that allows coachees to recognise that there are a variety of stakeholders that they may need to consider, and influence, when implementing change or advocating for their own position in a given situation.   The tool also provides a visual map of a coachee's stakeholders and where they sit in relation to their understanding and agreement with a project or situation.    Join us on this podcast as we explore the world of Stakeholder Management and discover how mapping out your stakeholders might help you in thinking through your next moves in engaging with them.    Resources: Six Thinking Hats episode: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/episode-90-coaching-tools-six-thinking-hats/  SCARF model episode: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/episode-42-coaching-tools-the-scarf-model/    Stakeholder Allegiance Model can be found here:  https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/episode-180-stakeholder-management/  Enjoy the podcast? Episode 179: Coaching Tools - Strengths and Values Cards Strengths and values are both fantastic topics to discuss with your coaching clients. And we are often asked about the ways we might explore them in the coaching room.  While we have explored both strengths and values in previous podcast episodes, we haven't really talked about a rather brilliant tool Tom created to help explore both topics. Some time ago, Tom created a pack of strengths and values coaching cards that work splendidly to help coaching clients uncover their strengths and recognise their values. The cards allow for both the clarity of words and the creativity of images to come together to produce a whole brain response in clients as they work with the cards to explore either their strengths or values, or both.   Join us in this episode, as we chat about how the cards came to be and how you might use them in the coaching room. Resources: More on these cards, and some of the exercises you can use with them can be found here: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/discovery/  Enjoy the podcast? In episode 160 we introduced the Stoic philosophers and suggested that a few of the questions that stemmed from that group might be useful to ask in a coaching session.    Today we explore a couple of latin phrases that have their origins in stoic philosophy. One of the phrases that we discuss on this episode of the podcast reminds us of what it is to be human and to have a finite amount of time on the planet.    The other phrase reminds us that much of life is outside of our control, and that accepting the events that have occurred as we travel along our journey can serve us well and feed into a balanced sense of subjective well-being.    Join us as we explore some of the wisdom the Greeks and the Romans left behind for us.  Enjoy the podcast? Social media is an interesting place, isn't it? We often see posts, ideas, challenges, or just different perspectives that make us think. We regularly see people's take on what coaching is, and what is, or isn't, important when it comes to choosing a coach. In this episode, we share our thoughts on what someone might consider if they're thinking about hiring a coach. From checking their qualifications, insurance and professional memberships, to looking at their online presence, recommendations and testimonials. And perhaps most importantly, we talk about having a conversation with a potential coach before deciding whether they're the right coach and committing to working with them.  There are a few simple things that those looking for a coach might do to ensure they're making an informed choice. This means that, as coaches, we can also be thinking of these points ourselves to make the most of the opportunity to market our coaching. The same considerations are also useful for anyone looking for a therapist, so this is one episode that could be worth sharing with someone who is considering either.   Enjoy the podcast? In the past we have challenged the idea of accountability in the coaching room; how much can we really hold someone accountable? And we came to the conclusion that we couldn't really do that. And yet, having an accountability partner is still often cited as a reason for having coaching, by both coachees and coaches.   As ever, we learn and grow, and refine our thinking, and Tom has been considering this for some while.    In this episode we discuss a different idea of what a coach can provide that might look  a little like accountability, but is more nuanced and, arguably, more powerful. We also talk about how people are slippery with their own commitments and consider ways to counter this tendency to talk ourselves out of things we really want to do.    Tom also makes reference to Gabriele Oettingen, who is not actually a member of a Scandinavian royal family but is in fact part of the German noble house of Oettingen-Spielberg. She is also a psychologist and the creator of the WOOP model for working towards desired outcomes.    We hope you enjoy the conversation.  Enjoy the podcast? Here at Your Coaching Journey we believe that before you start working with any coachee, it is important to have an initial conversation. They're called different things by different coaches, so you might have a Discovery Call, or a Chemistry Session.   Whatever we choose to call them, these conversations help to ensure that both you and the coachee are on the same page when it comes to expectations around the coaching. They allow you to uncover the coachee's best hopes for the coaching and for you to explain your own individual approach.    They also allow you to start contracting with your potential future coachee around the boundaries for the coaching.    In this episode, we aim to de-mistify Discovery Calls and Chemistry Sessions and provide some ideas for engaging in them.   Resources:  As mentioned in this episode, here are couple of appointment booking apps: https://calendly.com/ https://tidycal.com/   Enjoy the podcast? It's been a little while since we interviewed one of our lovely coaching doctors, but we're remedying that situation with our latest episode, in which Tom is chatting with Dr Kate Davies.    Kate is a GP and Transformational Coach and focuses on supporting neurodivergent individuals, particularly around issues they may be having around their executive function and the emotional toll that comes with those issues.    Join Tom and Kate on this episode of the podcast as Kates shares how she is working as a coach in the neurodivergent space and also talks about the creativity and freedom of expression she has found in one of her fascinating new hobbies.    Kate will be joining us on October 14th 2026 for our online coaching conference around Neurodivergence and AI. We know our coaching doctors love a good read, as do we.    And there are some books that one or both of us have returned to several times, which is often a good indicator that it holds, not just a passing interest for us, but some deeper insights that are useful in our personal development and growth.    In this episode we discuss one of Tom's recommended reads, Who Moved My Cheese?' by Dr Spencer Johnson. WMMC is a short, easy to digest story that acts as a modern day parable and illustrates the different responses that people have towards change.    WMMC offers us a lesson around how complacency and a sense of entitlement can lead to inertia whilst change is going on all around us, and Tom reflects on how his own learnings from reading the story informed his response to the pandemic, back in 2020.    Join us in this episode as we seek to find out who did move the cheese and what happened once it was moved.  Enjoy the podcast? When a deeply held belief limits our choices, or our capacity for change or growth, coaching can be a wonderful space to explore and challenge it.   In this episode we talk about how to spot limiting beliefs and which tools we have in our transformational coaching toolkit to explore and unpick them in order to help our coachee find new ways to be. In this episode we are dissecting a concept that has quietly infiltrated the coaching space: Polyvagal Theory. Marketed as the ultimate framework to map our emotional reactions and "hack" the autonomic nervous system, understand stress, and work with trauma, it is often quoted as fact.    Listen in as we explore what the compelling vocabulary like "ventral vagal states" means, and whether  the scientific evidence backs up the theoretical claims?
