─────────────
Today's theme is paid leave in Japan.
In Japan, if you work at the same company for six months and show up for at least 80% of your working days, you receive ten days of paid leave. You don't need to give a reason for taking it, and part-time workers get it too if they meet the conditions. Since 2019, companies have even been legally obliged to make workers take at least five days a year.
So do people in Japan actually use all of it?
The take-up rate for 2024 was 66.9% — the highest on record. But of the 18.1 days granted, only 12.1 were taken.
Let's listen to the news and find out how time off works in Japan🌿
📝Today's words
有給休暇 (paid leave) /付与 (to grant) /取得 (to obtain) /取得率 (take-up rate) /業種 (industry) /義務 (obligation)
💬How many days of paid leave do you get in a year? Do you use them all, or leave some behind? Tell me in the comments!
─────────────

ちょうど3,000字に|The Law Behind Japanese Names: Now Exactly 3,000|「能用於取名的漢字」有法律規定?
2026/09/16
▶︎ Japanese lessonshttps://www.italki.com/en/teacher/8512356
Hello, I'm Sayuri! In this episode I introduce a news story about the kanji you're allowed to use in a Japanese name. In Japan, the characters parents may choose for their child are actually fixed by law. This June the Ministry of Justice added one more character, 勒 (roku), bringing the total to exactly 3,000. The change came out of a court decision over one family's birth notification. Let's learn the news words 改正 (kaisei / revising a law) and 受理 (juri / formally accepting a document), and take a look at the rules behind Japanese names!

Hello, I'm Sayuri! In this episode, I share a rare piece of "price cut" news from a Japan that's full of price increases. Lawson, one of Japan's biggest convenience store chains, announced that from September 29th it will lower the price of all its hand-wrapped onigiri by a flat 10 yen — and the reason is that the price of rice has come down. Let's learn the news words 値上げ (neage / price increase) and 値下げ (nesage / price cut), and also the difference between temaki and jikamaki onigiri!
