165. Struggling Reader? 3 Things We Do Every Week (Including a 190-Year-Old Reader)
2026/10/13
Is your child a "good reader" who can't actually tell you what they just read? A distressed mama asked me in the comments how we handle struggling readers, so in Episode 165 I'm walking through the 3 things we do in our homeschool for reading comprehension: 1. Read-alouds — chosen by me, read purely for the joy of the story (no worksheets!) 2. Quiet Reading Time (QRT) — 30 minutes a day, at the level where your child can actually succeed, even if that means dropping back to Frog and Toad 3. The McGuffey Readers — the 190-year-old readers we use for oral reading, spelling, vocabulary, narration and comprehension questions in 10–15 minutes I also share how my "best reader in the class" son broke down in tears over a chapter book, and what I learned about meeting kids where they are. 📚 Vintage curriculum (free downloads + McGuffey Reader links): CLICK HERE ✏️ Free copy of With Pencil and Pen (1906): https://schooltohomeschool.com/with-pencil-and-pen SCHOOL TO HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:  Janae's Links for Vintage Books Sign Up for the School to Homeschool Newsletter School to Homeschool YouTube Channel CONNECT WITH US! 164. Have We Confused Schooling With Learning? with Dr. Pablo Riboldi
2026/10/06
What happens when an instructional-science PhD decides grades and tests may be getting in the way of real learning? Dr. Pablo Riboldi joins me to explain why he built a homeschool program without traditional grades or tests, why he returned to classical texts like Euclid's Elements, and why students should become responsible for their own education. We talk about vintage textbooks, the flipped classroom, intellectual honesty, teaching children to think, and a radically different definition of what it means to be educated. And if you've ever worried that you're not qualified to homeschool your children, stay until the end. His message to parents is one you need to hear. https://loveoflearninginstitute.com/ Buy Euclid's Elements HERE: https://link.amazon/B04guqQKI SCHOOL TO HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:  Janae's Links for Vintage Books Sign Up for the School to Homeschool Newsletter School to Homeschool YouTube Channel CONNECT WITH US! 2026/09/15
In this episode, I talk with pediatric occupational therapist and homeschool consultant Sarah Collins about the clues parents often see before they know what those clues mean. We discuss sensory processing, handwriting and reading struggles, movement, interoception, proprioception, outdoor and risky play, occupational therapy, and how to tell when a child may need more than a different curriculum. Sarah also shares practical ways homeschool parents can observe their children, work with their strengths, build a support team, and recognize when the parent may need support too. 160. What About the Girls? A Path Beyond College with Rachel
2026/08/21
In this episode, I speak with Rachel about building an education around real skills rather than simply collecting credentials. As a second-generation homeschooler, she explored homemaking, business, herbology, doula work, midwifery, fitness, and lifelong learning before ultimately choosing motherhood and homeschooling. 158. Why we should NEVER stop reading aloud to children.
2026/08/11
Why do families stop reading aloud once children learn to read for themselves? In this episode, we make the case that we may be stopping far too soon. We explore the history of reading aloud, oral recitation, Charles Dickens' public readings, the McGuffey Readers, and modern research on vocabulary, language development, story listening, and shared reading. You'll also hear why reading aloud should complement—not replace—phonics and independent reading, how it can become a bridge into books children aren't ready to tackle alone, and why shared stories naturally lead to conversations about courage, loyalty, justice, sacrifice, forgiveness, and human nature. Plus, you'll get practical read-aloud recommendations for children from preschool through the teenage years and simple advice for creating a family reading culture without turning every book into another school assignment. Your child may be able to read the book alone. But that doesn't necessarily mean you should stop reading it together.
