2026/10/01
This week I'm joined by Ilya Chaiken, the director of Pretty Ugly: The Story Of The Lunachicks & Theo Kogan & Sydney 'Squid' Silver of The Lunachicks!!! We discuss the experience of having not only a movie about your lives come to fruition but a book as well, their dreams of each having solo albums like Kiss when the band first started, the incredible story of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon trying to get the band to play worse when they offered to record them, their jaw-dropping first UK tour and Lunachick-mania, Ilya befriending the band early on and witnessing their very first show, going to the high school that Fame was based on, Ilya's filmmaking background, how The Lunachicks reaction to the 80s was essential to the band forming, having to travel in packs in 80s NYC, Theo & Gina's pus-filled artwork and translating that to a live look, Alice Cooper, GWAR, their hour long XXX VHS tape, how the film took over 10 years to make, their Nowhere Fast short film inspired by their love of John Waters, L7, their song Insomnia, the band having to navigate being told that a club already had booked enough female bands that month, gaining the trust of the band to make the film & more! "YELLOW SUBMARINE" w/ Roger Clark Miller
2026/09/24
Yes! It took a member of Mission of Burma to finally pick a Beatles film to discuss, three years into the podcast! Totally honored to have the person behind so much of my favorite sonic wizardry, Roger Clark Miller, on Revolutions Per Movie. We discuss the mysterious lore behind the Horrible Truth About Burma live LP and how it might be the high water mark of their tape manipulator (Martin Swope), the moment when Roger first heard the elements of Burma come together, the journey to get Peter Prescott a microphone so he could also sing in the band, Sproton Layer--Roger’s band he started in 1969 with his brothers when they were barely teenagers, playing Sun Ra records to weed out the drummers who auditioned for Burma, the influences on the chaos inside the beauty of their songs, why Roger thinks Sproton Layer was Burma through a psychedelic lens rather than a post-punk one (and how they interconnected artistically), the hope baked within The Summer Of Love, Roger's first band Factor and why he had to leave them behind, Silver Apples, recording an improv session with your brothers while your parents go square dancing, how a 70 year old modern dancer heard Sproton Layer and decided their music needed to be published in score format, how Roger felt he finally became a good guitar player by the time they recorded Burma's VS, the making of the Vacu Trem and Vacu Fuzz guitar pedals, the Vacuheads, Roger's scientific family and living with monkeys in their backyard, how Roger writes lyrics and Syd Barrett’s influence on him, how frustratingly great Yellow Submarine is (of course The Beatles have a fantastic animated film in them!), how George Harrison's drone pop tracks were often the highlight for us, Roger seeing the film on acid in the theater, The Beatles' animated shows, George's song "Blue Jay Way" and its lyrical influence on Roger’s new record (The Green Man), getting off the Beatles train and the butcher cover, how different The Stones are versus The Beatles in dealing with their legacy and more! ENCORE PRESENTATION: THE COCKETTES w/ David Weissman
2026/09/22
Welcome to an ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vaults. This was an early episode of Revolutions Per Movie with one of my favorite documentary filmmakers, David Weissman. Through his hard work and artistry, he made the story of The Cockettes available to future generations of free-spirited weirdos to drink from forever. (Episode 12 originally aired on Dec. 9th 2023) ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: This week, we talked to David Weissman (the co-director of ‘The Cockettes’ & ‘We Were Here’) about the amazing documentary ‘The Cockettes’—documenting the trailblazing, avant-garde drag & music ensemble from the late 60s. We discussed the origin stories of The Cockettes, John Waters’ passion for the troupe and his involvement with the documentary, the difference in the ways the 60s played out for The East Coast vs. The West Coast, the emerging SF punk scene & brushing your teeth with drugs. So let down your hair and put on a show with this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!! THE 3RD ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - "BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH & NOTHING BUTT" w/ King Coffee & Tom Stern
2026/09/17
I'm honored to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Revolutions Per Movie with two legends--King Coffey of Butthole Surfers & filmmaker Tom Stern (Freaked, The Idiot Box), who directed the new documentary BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH & NOTHING BUTT. We discuss the complicated relationship with Texas and what about that push/pull creates singular artistic statements, how Tom met the band and how he started filming the "Cherub" music video that same day, the Texas mythos, King's experience of seeing Butthole Surfers for the first time, Tom losing his house in the LA fires and using it to great dramatic effect in the documentary, what was the first song King felt like he added his stamp to, creating their iconic drum sound with Teresa Nervosa, how they got the puppetry in the documentary to mimic the band's movements so perfectly, the live Blind Eye Sees All VHS tape, King's other amazing band USA/Mexico, the story behind Tom's super 8mm Butthole Surfers epic The Bar-B-Que Movie starring a pre-Deadwood John Hawkes, putting melons on your head at flyswatting parties, building Gibby's flapping hair contraption, what it felt like for King being on stage in Butthole Surfers, King's thoughts on being interviewed about your trauma but having to make it entertaining, why the band thought Tom was the only person who could make a documentary about them, burning words into the audiences' retinas, scream therapy, the creation of their album Rembrandt Pussyhorse, how frank Johnny Depp is in the film about his and Gibby's addictions, how the first three albums were complete studio creations and how that changed later on, the Celebrity Club in Atlanta, their communal life styles and more! Thank you to everyone who has listened to Revolutions Per Movie Patreon these last three years. And a giant thank-you to anyone who supports the RPM Patreon — the show would not exist without your kindness. "THE WRECKING CREW" plus an obsessive's look at the music of Richard Davies w/ Richard Davies
2026/09/10
Robert Pollard: "Richard Davies is one of the last great songwriters on planet Earth." Alright…this is a big one for me, as one of my long-time musical heroes, Richard Davies of The Moles & Cardinal, joins me on this week's episode to let me discuss his body of work as well as his music film pick, The Wrecking Crew!!!! We discuss why no two of his albums are the same (down to multiple re-issues of the same album, with different versions of the songs!), coming from Wales to Australia to form The Moles, their John Peel session, pulling stressed out bagpipe players and unknown trumpet players into his recordings, how writing lyrics got easier for him as he got older, both of us writing original songs for Robert Pollard (Richard with Cosmos and myself with The Takeovers), how the album Instinct was about being alone and afraid in NYC, working with Poison Idea’s Slayer Hippie and Heatmiser’s Tony Lash on the Cardinal record, being inspired by Ban Roll-on jingles of the 60s, The Beatles' Christmas flexidisc, the majesty of Flying Nun bands, Brian Wilson’s experiences with The Wrecking Crew, the hell or high water attitude of Richard's songwriting, our situations of being courted iin the 90s and the sinister vibe in it, T. Rex and Flo & Eddie’s backing vocals, the professionalism and experimentaliism of The Wrecking Crew and how they played on The Byrds' Mr. Tamboruine Man, Carole Kaye’s bass and the freedom in her bass playing, Cher and more! 2026/09/08
Welcome to an ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vaults. There may have been no more cut-through-the-b******t guest than Perla Batalla!!! Getting to discuss her legacy as well as her lovely creative partnership with Leonard Cohen was sparky as hell...and I loved her critical eye and honesty on a film she's a part of (LEONARD COHEN: I'M YOUR MAN). Anyone who is critical of U2's awkward performance in this film with Leonard is always going to be a lifelong friend of mine! Perla forever!!! (Episode 86 originally aired on April 24th, 2025). ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: On this week’s episode, we are joined by Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and collaborator with LEONARD COHEN, PERLA BATALLA, who discusses her good friend/creative muse and her thoughts on the film 'LEONARD COHEN: I'M YOUR MAN.' We discuss Perla’s childhood and escape from her family into a life in music, her Mom’s record store, working for T.V. legend Norman Lear documenting The Jeffersons & One Day At A Time, her surprisingly frantic introduction to Leonard Cohen’s music and the man himself, musician Julie Christensen, working with Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright & Beth Orton, being fired from the rock n’ roll world, how Leonard’s lyrics cracked Perla open emotionally, the pressures of being Leonard Cohen and what audiences expected from him, being a superstar in Europe, his album The Future, Cohen’s work discipline, the flexibilty of Cohen’s work leading artistic interruptations by others, how the concerts for Leonard Cohen came about through legendary producer Hal Wilner, why Leonard did not want to be in the film, the emotions of touring, how Perla worked her magic to get certain songs in the concert, why U2 is so prominent in the film even thought they were not in the concert itself, the problems we both have with this film, how the hell did Mel Gibson become a produer on the film, Laurie Anderson being involved in the prerfomrances originally, Leonard writing songs critizing his record company and more... So join us for a very insightful look into the depths of Cohen's life and music on this week's Revolutions Per Movie! "JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR" w/ Mike Sacks
2026/09/03
My guest this week is Mike Sacks (NY Times bestselling author and creator of weirdo audio projects featuring Jon Hamm, John Waters, Bob Odenkirk, and Laraine Newman) who picked Jesus Christ Superstar! We also talk about misremembering scenes from movies we watched as kids, trucker films of the 70s, Paul Williams, Mike's novelizations of "movies" such as the grunge classic Slouchers, working on his audio novelization of Stinker Lets Loose with Jon Hamm, our mutual obsession with Chris Elliott (PLUS Mike gives us a world premiere scoop on the plot of his new audio project with Mr. Elliott!), Bad Ronald, why Bob Odenkirk sent my video store Mr. Show VHS tapes, how we each discovered Jesus Chris Superstar, seeing the Afghan Whigs perform "39 Lashes" as their opening number in the early 90s, how Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice couldn't get the funding to stage JCS, Mike renting the film and why he hid it from his parents, Carl Anderson's haunting performance as Judas, the polarizing performance by Ted Neely as Jesus, the newer documentary Superstars, Bee Gees and their collaborations with Yvonne Elliman, and Mike lays a bunch of knowledge and myths about JCS from his proposed 33 1/3 book on the musicial! "ONE TRICK PONY" w/ Emil Amos
2026/08/27
My guest this week is Emil Amos (musician: Grails, Holy Sons, Om, Jandek & podcast: Drifter's Sympathy) who surprised me by picking the Paul Simon narrative film One Trick Pony (which also features the mind-bending acting debut of Lou Reed). We also discuss the naivety of thinking certain artists were bigger culturally than they were, Lou Barlow 7"s and Guided By Voices, how Emil goes about creating his vast & epic podcast, Emil's gateway into the world of soundtracks, Sam Coomes of Quasi being an employee at my video store, Flower Travelin' Band, the experiences of Emil performing with Jandek, Dexter Romweber, Wolf Eyes, cheap guitar powers, how One Trick Pony is a surprising look at Paul Simon feeling out of step with the times, The B-52s performing Rock Lobster in the film, films set in late 70s New York, Street Hassle & Bruce Springsteen, labels wanting to mold you into something you're not, the flex of casting Lou Reed to play a producer who is asking Paul Simon make a more commercial album, the Siskel & Ebert's review of the film and much more! ENCORE PRESENTATION: "VOX LUX" by Logan Lynn
2026/08/25
Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! I love this episode because my initial experience of seeing this upsetting, darkly funny film (by the director of The Brutalist) was completely thrown overboard due to my guest Logan Lynn's harmful experience within the music industry when he was younger (which is the subject of his new documentary, The Pain And The Power). A fantastic discussion on a polarizing film that's a hard watch, but never leaves you. (Episode 25 originally aired on Feb 29th 2024). ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: This week, we talk to indie pop dance legend and Kill Rock Stars recording artist, Logan Lynn, who picked the extremely intense music narrative film, Vox Lux, to discuss. We discussed the realities and tropes of music films, Lynn’s early years as a teenager on a major label, the lack of protection for young artists within creative industries, addressing addiction and trauma in your art, the notion of selling out, backstage rituals, making fun of ‘The Devil’, the Swedish Pop Mafia, how music gets taken out of context, whether or not Natalie Portman a convincing pop icon in the movie and so much more. So get ready to dance through the pain on this week’s Revolutions Per Movie. "THE UV RACE: AUTONOMY AND DELIBERATION" w/ Evan Minsker
2026/08/20
My guest this week is Evan Minsker (Critic/Journalist for Pitchfork & the heart behind the amazing punk newsletter See/Saw) who (...wait for it...) picked a very punk film: Autonomy And Deliberation, by a very Australian AND very punk band The UV Race. And although it has never been publicly released, the director and the band let us watch it so we can discuss it for you! Got it yet?!?!? We talk about why the finished film never reached eyes outside of a few friends in Australia, Evan’s early punk rock roots, the fear of being reviewed on Pitchfork, not being able to get into the venue to see Fugazi and Scratch Acid (so you listen to them outside), the amazing punk scenes and punk labels happening all around the world right now, alternative DIY spaces, being the oldest person at the show (at age 27), Turnstile, how The UV Race has no wikipedia page/follows no one back on social media/embraces broken web links, the poetry of front man Marcus, the mystery surrounding the director Johann Rashid and his film inluences as a child which influenced his filmmaking, Courtney Barnett, the self-depricating tone of the film, the cameos from members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Dick Diver & Total Control, the soundtrack for the unreleased film, blowing the band money at the Greyhound Track, how the structure of the film is bascially The Blues Brothers ("I’ve got to get the band back together"), how the film is built upon the band’s inner workings/language and sense of humor, Marcus' other band Hot Tubs Time Machine, their also unseen Sci-Fi followup: THE UV RACE DISGRACE SPACE, and we pitch a new film to complete their filmic trilogy. EXPLORING THE AXIS: THE ORAL HISTORY OF FRONTIER RECORDS with Lisa Fancher, Chapter 3: FLP1001: Flyboys S/T 12” EP (A Patreon Complete Club Exclusive)
2026/08/16
Hello and welcome to this bonus episode of Revolutions Per Movie.  Thank you for supporting what we’re doing…it means a lot. We were in the process of releasing our recent conversation about John Curry and his band Flyboys this week when we heard from Lisa Fancher about his passing. So we've decided to make this episode of EXPLORING THE AXIS: THE ORAL HISTORY OF FRONTIER RECORDS w/ Lisa Fancher available to everyone. Much love to John, his family, and his bandmates. SHOW NOTES: Welcome to Chapter 3 of Exploring the Axis, where we freak out about the genesis of Lisa’s first vinyl release for Frontier Records, the iconic Flyboys S/T 12” EP, an incredible pinnacle of L.A. power-pop-driven punk/garage songwriting. We discuss why the timing was right to release her first record, what the label was originally going to be called, how she first met Flyboys by interviewing them in her parent's living room, why Flyboys won’t let their debut 7” be re-issued, how their 2nd 7” Crayon World is considered a classic of the era & how the sleeves came back in the wrong size, telling Slash to f**k off, why the look of Flyboys was different than other bands in the scene, the long journey to get the S/T EP recorded, recording at Leon Russell’s recording studio, Disneyland vs. hardcore punk, starting to think about putting out a Circle Jerks LP, JFA covering the Flyboys without credit and more! "THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS" w/ Josh Kantor
2026/08/06
My guest this week is Josh Kantor (Organist for The Boston Red Sox; keyboardists w/ The Dream Syndicate, The Split Squad & The Baseball Project), who picked the Stevie Wonder LP, film score and theatrical film, The Secret Life Of Plants. We discuss Josh playing with Mavis Staples and Peter Buck, his mentorship from the legendary Clem Burke and playing in a band with him, the influence of Nancy Faust (the White Sox organist) on him, transforming the endless musical requests he gets while playing organ at the ball park (ranging from Black Sabbath to Maceo Parker), our experiences as children with Stevie Wonder’s Journey Through "The Secret Life Of Plants" double lp, the strange tale of how this film and album got made, albums made specifically for plants, the head-scratching un-released sequel to the book The Secret Life Of Plants, how the film's director (Walon Green) also wrote the screenplays for Sorcerer & The Wild Bunch and created the freaky tunnel scene in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, how the film's producer would describe the film to Stevie Wonder as he created the soundtrack, how this was the first time sampling was used on a commercial recording, using animals sounds throughout the record, the floral-scented first pressing of the LP, screaming vegetables and boiling shrimp experiments shown in the film, how the real science in the film gets dwarfed by pseudo science, Josh's high school recording of "Come Back As A Flower", the incredible trilogy of Stevie Wonder songs at the end of the film, how and why the LP and tour flopped on its intial release, the shock of Stevie Wonder showing up within the actual film and more!
