Join Lars, Shay, and Rob as they examine Bradley Robert Edwards, the man convicted of the Claremont serial killings, through a forensic psychology and schema therapy lens. They explore Edwards’ outwardly ordinary life alongside the concealed fantasy world and escalating sexual violence that characterised his offending. The episode traces Edwards’ offending history from early fetishistic behaviour through to the 1988 Huntingdale home invasion, the 1990 hospital assault, the 1995 abduction and rape, and the murders of Sarah Spiers, Jane Rimmer, and Ciara Glennon. They discuss how DNA and fingerprint evidence ultimately connected Edwards to earlier offences and contributed to the breakthrough in the investigation. The hosts explore the role of fantasy, paraphilic behaviour, rejection, emotional distress, and control, while considering possible schema modes including detached protector, compliant surrenderer, bullying attack, and perfectionistic overcontroller. They also examine the apparent contrast between Edwards’ highly controlled public persona and his concealed deviant behaviour, and consider why his offending may have stopped after 1997. The episode offers a psychological exploration of one of Australia’s most notorious serial killing cases, while considering the complexities of understanding offending behaviour through a schema therapy and forensic psychology framework. Dr Lisa Warren - clinical and forensic psychologist and co-founder of Code Black Psychology - joins Dr Lars Madsen to explore the complex psychology behind threats to kill and coercive control. Drawing on years of clinical experience and groundbreaking research, Lisa shares insights into the motivations behind repeated threats, the chilling dynamics of coercive control, and the often-overlooked emotional distress underlying these behaviors. We dive deep into the profile of individuals who make threats, including their risk for future violence and even suicide, and the clinical challenges in treating them. Lisa also sheds light on the architecture of coercive control, comparing it to tactics used on prisoners of war and cult members, and reveals how these dynamics trap victims in an “invisible cage.” This episode is a must-listen for mental health professionals, forensic practitioners, and anyone interested in the psychology of threat, control, and harm.
