Four days out from the October 19 referendum, the headlines are all saying the same thing: 75% of Albertans voted to stay in Canada.
That’s not what happened.
The question on the ballot wasn’t whether to leave. It was whether Albertans would be allowed to hold a referendum on that question at all. A yes vote wouldn’t have taken us out of Canada. It would have given Alberta some footing — something to bring to Ottawa when we ask for a fair deal. Instead, we’re saddled with the status quo for a while.
And here’s the part I can’t get past. If you voted option one, you voted for more of the same. Equalization. Cost of living. Mass immigration. Federal overreach. Then the same week, the news runs stories about grocery prices. Give your head a shake.
Then there’s question five. 863,036 people said they do not support requiring proof of citizenship — a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card — to vote in an Alberta provincial election. I still can’t believe it.
**I’m compiling the referendum information.** If you worked a poll, had trouble getting a ballot, or were told something at your voting station that made you think “what the heck?” — write to me at [email protected]. Everything is kept confidential. I’ll put it all together in a report.
Closer to home: I went down to Chinook C-Train Station this week. Unkempt trees, graffiti, about a dozen people camped inside for the afternoon, and the businesses across the street gone. No wonder nobody is taking the train. Meanwhile the City of Calgary has added roughly 3,000 positions in about six years, while you’re scrimping to pay your mortgage and your taxes. City Hall works for us. Fix the roads. Take care of the trash. Make the city safe. Stop the waste.
Also on the episode: the Emergencies Act case is heading to the Supreme Court, and the CCF needs support for the fight. And the UCP AGM is coming up November 27–29 at the BMO Centre in Calgary. Be there if you can.
Last thing. Don’t get discouraged, and don’t decide your neighbours are terrible people because they voted differently than you. They divide us on purpose, so we’re not watching what they’re up to.

7:11 Oct 16 26 Ep# 317 | Zuzana Janosova-Den Boer | We Are in Psychological War in Pretense of Peacetime
2026/10/17
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Zuzana Janosova-Den Boer is back.
When we left off in Part 1, she had taken us through the split of Czechoslovakia. Tonight we came home — to Canada, and to what she sees happening under our feet right now.
Some background for anyone new. Zuzana was born into communist Czechoslovakia, a country that by then had been under communist rule for decades. Communism fell there in 1989, the country split in 1993, and she came to Canada in 1997 — not as a refugee, but as a skilled worker who had to earn her points, prove her education and language, and show she had no criminal record. She didn’t trust her old homeland not to vote socialism back in. She finished at the University of Calgary, earned her professional engineering designation, and worked in Alberta oil and gas for more than 20 years. She and her employer parted ways over mandatory injections.
THE CANADA SHE ARRIVED IN
The first thing that shocked her here was a TV debate. Two men disagreed hard. At the end, one told the other he disagreed with him but would make sure he always had the right to say it. Where she grew up, the slogan was “who is not with us is against us.”
She says she felt truly free. She says that started to change after 2015 — not because the Liberals won, but because of who led them.
THE FOUR STAGES
In 2018 she found the interviews of KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, and the unease she had been feeling finally had a structure. She published her article “I Survived Communism — Are You Ready for Your Turn?” in January 2019. Her framework:
1. Polarization — divide people and keep them divided, usually by casting one group as victims and another as oppressors, and running it on fear.
2. Demoralization — take control of education, erase history, sideline parents, discredit faith, break down family values.
3. Destabilization — wreck the economy through debt and inflation, let crime run, catch and release, open the doors without control.
4. Revolution — once enough control is in place, stop pretending.
Her claim is that these don’t arrive one after another. They overlap. And she says Canada has all four in play.
WHY CANADIANS DON’T SEE IT
Canada has no history of a totalitarian state. When she asks people whether communism could happen here, the answer is always Eastern Europe, Russia, Venezuela — somewhere else. So she offers a swap: drop the word communism and say total government control. Then compare what we called normal ten years ago with what we accept now.
It doesn’t come by invasion, she says. It comes over a generation or two, from your own countrymen, one bill at a time, with a pause after each one for people to adjust and justify it. Denial supplies the most important thing any dictator needs: time.
She also named who gets recruited first — not the cynics, but good-hearted people who are easy to move with a victim story.
THE RECORDER ON THE TABLE
The darkest part of the conversation was about trust. In Czechoslovakia, you didn’t talk politics over dinner, because you didn’t know who was listening or what was mounted under the table. She sees the early version here in the recent police visits over social media posts — with one difference that matters: those Canadians could film it and post it. In her words, “It’s literally we are in psychological war in pretense of peacetime.”
WHERE ALBERTA STANDS
Her read: roughly 30% of Albertans see what’s happening, 30% are in denial, and 30–40% are on the fence. She believes Alberta still has a critical mass that is awake, and she says the work is talking to the fence-sitters first.
Her closing message was for parents and grandparents. Her own family believed they were building social justice for their children. She grew up in a totalitarian state. Think about what you’re handing down.
We’re doing Part 3: what happens to people once the state controls everything — what she calls the lots of things that happen before the gulag.

Deanna McLeod | The Fear Propaganda Was the Pre-Marketing Campaign
2026/10/16
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Deanna McLeod doesn’t come to this as an outsider. She spent close to a decade inside the pharmaceutical industry — research, sales, marketing — and left because she was uncomfortable with the pressure to emphasize a drug’s benefits and minimize its safety. She told me there were training sessions on how to do exactly that.
A McMaster grad, she founded Kaleidoscope Strategic in 2000. For 26 years her firm has reviewed clinical evidence and worked with clinicians across Canada to build national cancer treatment guidelines. Her job, as she describes it, is knowing where pharma’s bias lives and correcting for it.
I sat down with her at the Allison Inquiry in Ottawa on September 10.
**The pre-marketing campaign**
Every drug launch, McLeod says, has two phases. Before the product arrives, you spend months making people painfully aware of the problem. Fear does the work. With vaccines, you emphasize the worst-case outcome and generalize that risk onto a healthy population.
Her read on COVID: “the fear propaganda was the pre-marketing campaign.” Lockdowns and masking, she says, pulled the elastic back — so that when the vaccine arrived, people were desperate for a way out.
**What Alberta’s records showed**
McLeod says she went through Alberta’s public health documentation. By her account, records from summer 2020 noted a 20% false negative rate from improper sampling, and that PCR could detect mRNA 90 days after infection. Her conclusion: the test couldn’t distinguish an active infection from an old one, and the more you tested, the more cases you found.
“So they knew that in the summer of 2020.”
She also explains how restricting testing to very sick people produces a high case rate — which is what triggers emergency frameworks in the first place.
**One office, total control**
Once Alberta’s Public Health Emergency was triggered, McLeod says, the Chief Medical Officer of Health became the quarterback: directing institutions, regulatory colleges and government, with no legal recourse if those powers were abused.
“It’s a single point of failure.”
**The liability shift**
One of the more unusual points she raised: with a conventional drug, the manufacturer makes the product and carries the burden of showing how it behaves in the body. With mRNA, she argues, you’re given instructions and your body makes the product — shifting where liability sits.
**What she wants changed**
McLeod’s fixes are specific. Close the emergency regulatory “back door” that allows rolling review and approval on limited data. Build accountability into public health. End the centralization of power in a single office.
She also offered a rule she says anyone can use: if someone has to use fear or coercion — loss of job, travel, family, mobility — to convince you, “they’re not your friend and you shouldn’t listen to them.”
She has spent, by her own count, at least $100,000 of her own money on this research. When I asked what she hopes comes out of the Inquiry, she said she does what’s right regardless of results — and that the results are in the hands of somebody with a higher pay grade.

7:11 Oct 13 26 Ep# 316 | Dr. Tau Braun | "Fear Is a Weapon"
2026/10/14
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
When the plague story broke out of Irkutsk, it came with the full 2020 kit: a mystery illness, a lab, a dead young woman, WHO officials on camera, and wall-to-wall coverage. Dr. Tau Braun’s first move was to put up a website called plagueupdates.com with one message: don’t fall for the b******t.
Dr. Braun spent a decade training law enforcement, emergency management and public health teams on active attacks. In 2019 he testified before the Texas Senate on mass violence. When COVID hit, he was in New York City and turned the same threat-assessment lens on the pandemic.
**The Irkutsk death.** Braun’s read is that the 28-year-old wasn’t killed by plague. She tested negative for plague, tularemia and COVID. She was ventilated the day she arrived and died of what was called a pneumonia of unknown origin. His argument: once the hospital knew she worked at a plague institute, a simple illness triggered an over-response — and the over-response killed her.
**Fear is the product.** “A tragedy can get milked, but it is a short cycle,” he says. The real money is in anticipatory stress — fear of something that hasn’t happened yet. Stress leads to disease, disease leads to death. Used on purpose, Braun calls it cognitive warfare.
**Convergence.** From his active-attacker work: after the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, thousands of officers converged. Abandoned cars blocked ambulances, people were locked down for hours without their medication, and the response itself started creating casualties. He sees the pandemic as the same pattern at global scale.
**The threat nobody’s watching.** Braun says the real biothreat isn’t the big, famous labs. It’s the small, hedge-funded biotech shop down the street, with a desktop printer that turns yeast and bacteria into proteins, no oversight, and one person who stays late.
We also get into plague vaccine pipelines and what he calls the “concession stand speech” on efficacy, the minus-90 vaccine trucks (”it was for a show”), Fauci branding himself as “the science,” his view of COVID as a fungal disease, his claim that SARS-CoV-2 doesn’t exist as described, and his work on copper and the nasopharynx.
His closing line is the one to keep: “fear is a weapon.” Don’t let anyone use it on you or your family.
These are Dr. Braun’s views; nothing here is medical advice.

7:11 Oct 8 26 Ep# 315 | Zuzana | Total Government Control
2026/10/09
Zuzana Janosova den Boer came to Canada in 1997 with two small children. She didn't flee communism — she lived through it, then watched what came after. What drove her out was the way her country was broken up. Czechoslovakia's constitution required a referendum if either side wanted to leave. Early polls showed most people didn't want to split. So, she says, politicians passed a different law and dissolved the country on January 1, 1993. In her words: "They made decision about us, without us."
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Asked why nobody protested, she gave an answer worth sitting with: "When you are ruled by totalitarian regime for 40 years, you learn to obey and be silent." What surprised me most was how she described the split itself. Within six months, 95% of assets, liabilities and responsibilities had been divided. The rest — the border villages, transit revenue from the gas pipeline, the gold — took until the end of the decade. And the whole time, people went to work, hospitals ran and pensions were paid. "We haven't been involved or impacted by those negotiations." She is blunt that her country started from a far worse position than Alberta: no private businesses on the day communism fell, no business law, no real banking system, and a currency that couldn't be exchanged abroad. So when she hears the price tags floated for Alberta independence, her reaction is simple: "Those numbers which I'm hearing here are absurd, literally absurd." Her bigger concern isn't the transition.
It's where she believes Canada is heading. She describes a moment in 2016 when she and a coworker who grew up in communist Romania admitted to each other that the old feelings were coming back. She walks through what she sees as the pattern — polarization, demoralization, destruction — and why she now prefers the phrase "total government control" to "communism." I asked her what happens if Alberta doesn't vote to leave. Her answer: "This movement is not going away." And if Ottawa doesn't change course, "it's not a question if Alberta will separate, but when it will separate." Zuzana has agreed to come back before October 19. Until then, watch the full conversation, read her article "I Survived Communism" https://unscrewthenews.substack.com/p/i-survived-communism-are-you-ready, and follow her on X at @DenZuzana.

2026/10/07
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Jeff Rath had to bump to tonight, so last night was just me. There was plenty to cover. Start with your water bill. Under the city's proposed rate plan, a typical Calgary bill goes from $119.21 a month to $206.94 by 2030. That's a 73.6% increase, or $1,053 more a year per household. In the same stretch, $870 million is moving from the water and wastewater utilities to City Hall as "return on equity," which used to be called a dividend. So where's the $3.61 billion ratepayers paid for maintenance?
Wouldn't we love to know? The day after the hike was unveiled, Calgary Transit posted two admin assistant jobs at up to $83,000 each before benefits and pensions. The hiring machine rolls on. Councillor Sonya Sharp put it to Mayor Farkas plainly. He seconded the November 2020 report that flagged rising water loss in the system. Where has he been for four years? The mayor also pledged to freeze property taxes for four years. I'd like your read on whether a recall belongs on the table.
On Alberta: if independence support is only 20%, as CBC and CTV keep telling us, why is so much energy going into it? Why the Carney–Smith pipeline announcement? And to be clear about October 19th, option two is not a vote to leave Canada. It's about taking power back from Ottawa and getting a fair shake.
On the plague story, Dr. Tal Braun has been asking the questions nobody else is. His advice is to follow the money. BARDA's Project BioShield has awarded up to $482 million for an antibiotic covering plague and melioidosis. He's worth following. The thread through all of it is accountability. At every level, from city council to Ottawa to the unelected bureaucrats above them, there's so little of it, and no shame.
Citizens have to get active.
Tell me what you think: [email protected]. Jeff Rath, tonight at 7:11.

2026/09/29

Dr. David Cartland trained for ten years and practised as a GP, A&E and urgent care doctor in rural Cornwall. In his words: "Never had a patient complaint." Then he started calling out doctors online who were telling the public the COVID jab was "100% safe" long term in pregnancy. He says 265 complaints landed at the General Medical Council in short order, and he believes it was organised. By his account, the process that followed was decided before it began.
The GMC wrote to every surgery he'd worked at, listing the allegations and inviting more concerns. At the tribunal, his accusers got anonymity and he got a public hearing. All six of his witnesses were ruled inadmissible, two-thirds of his statement was redacted, and 300 character references were thrown out. He was erased from the register for serious misconduct, with no patient involved. Then came the Disclosure and Barring Service, a list he describes as being for criminals and predators. He was placed on the children's and vulnerable adults' barred lists for life, with no arrest and no charge. The reasoning, as he recalls it, is that he might someday disagree with a safeguarding policy. "This is what we call pre-crime." We ran out of time before the police and the FA. That's Part 2. His warning to everyone watching: "If it can happen to me, it can happen to absolutely anyone."

UTN Allison Inquiry Interview Sept 9, 26 | Dr. Thorp & Dr. Hoffe | "Coward Weasels"
2026/09/23
Dr. James Thorp testified as an expert witness at Dr. Charles Hoffe’s hearing. He helped save the man’s career. Until this week in Ottawa, the two of them had never been in the same room.
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
That’s how this one opens — two physicians calling each other heroes, having a conversation that should have happened years ago. I caught them between sittings at the Allison Inquiry and asked them to give me fifteen minutes.
Thorp is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist with more than forty-five years in obstetrics. He believes he’s the only MFM physician anywhere who publicly opposed pushing the COVID shot on pregnant women, and he was fired for it. Since then he and his wife have published sixteen medical-legal white papers, including a Freedom of Information request into communications between the US Department of Health and Human Services and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists — the body that governs 62,000 OB-GYNs. They got back more than 1,400 pages. Over half were redacted. What survived the black marker, Thorp argues, shows a relationship he characterizes as pay-to-play, wrapped in non-disclosure agreements.
He walks through the timeline: concerns raised privately in the first months of 2021, including work on inflammation in pregnant animals, followed by a very public assurance in the pages of the most influential medical journal in the world that the shot was safe and necessary. He alleges a $426,000 transfer from HHS to that journal. He’s careful to call the interpretation his opinion. He is not careful about much else.
Hoffe comes at it from the other end — a rural practice, a batch of vaccine, and patients who got sick. He was charged with spreading misinformation. He describes what the biodistribution data showed about where the lipid nanoparticles ended up, why that made mandates for university students, young athletes and children indefensible in his view, and where he thinks the falling birth rate fits. When I put the word sterilization to him, he declined it and chose a narrower one: reduced fertility.
The sharpest moment is Thorp on his own profession. The inquiry had spent part of the day discussing how to protect physicians who don’t want to come forward. He wasn’t having it. A doctor’s duty runs to the patient, he said, not to the paycheque — and the ones who stayed silent are weasels.
Hoffe’s closing is quieter and lands harder. Two days of listening to people who were made to take something they didn’t want, didn’t trust and didn’t need, and who haven’t worked since. Heart-wrenching, he called it. Then: there needs to be some accountability there.
That’s the whole reason the inquiry exists. And it’s the whole reason I got on a plane.
The views expressed are those of my guests.

7:11 Sept 22 26 Ep #312 | Stéphanie Giguère | "I Was the Data"
2026/09/23
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
I met Stéphanie Giguère at the Allison Inquiry in Ottawa, and I knew I had to get her on the show. Stéphanie is a psychotherapist in small-town BC. For eight years the local doctors leaned on her clinical judgment. In January 2021 she rolled up her sleeve voluntarily, before any mandate. By the time she got back from lunch, her hands didn't work. She finished her report typing with her elbows. What followed was a systemic neurological collapse that hit her speech, motor control, memory, vision and heart. At the time everyone was being told not to overrun the ER, and her judgment was gone anyway, so she kept trying to go back to work.
She got to the ER on day eight, could barely speak, and was sent home to wait three weeks for her GP. That GP gave her a mental disorder diagnosis over the phone. Nine mental health professionals told her to get the second shot, get her passport and get out of her head. Stéphanie calls this "sanctuary trauma": you go to the place that's supposed to care for you, and you get gaslighting instead. "I was the data," she told me. Science starts with someone noticing something in the real world and saying we should study it. Nobody did. When she called the Montreal Neurological Institute, her McGill alma mater, and asked if they'd study her, the receptionist hung up.
Her neurology referral took 18 months, and then she learned the doctor had retired five years earlier. So she rebuilt herself. She started with children's cardboard books ("Bear likes food"), moved up to Fancy Nancy, and eventually got back to neurology journals. She's back in private practice today, working about 20 client hours a week with ongoing pain and fatigue. She lost her public health career for refusing the second dose. Friends have walked away, and some clients left after she testified. We also got into how the therapy room has turned into a room of activism, why the vaccine injured, the unvaccinated and the regretful vaccinated are all finding their way to her, and what comes next. Her answer is to keep filing FOIs, keep reading the emails, and keep supporting independent media. The Allison Inquiry opened a wound. Now it needs sunlight.

7:11 Sept 21 26 Ep# 311 | Dallas Brodie | "We Allowed Enemy Troops Into Our Army"
2026/09/22
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned as leader of the BC Conservatives on Sunday. Fourteen MLAs gone in under four months. I reached out to Dallas Brodie the minute I heard, because she’s been saying for over a year that something was rotten in that party.
She didn’t hold back.
Brodie calls Findlay’s time as leader a four-month political hit job — NDP smears out of the gate, then attacks from inside the conservative movement itself, including an anonymous X account called the “Findlay Files” that asked people to send in anything that could embarrass her. Leaks. Recordings. And then the departures, one a day, timed to stay on the six o’clock news.
Her diagnosis goes deeper than one leader. Brodie says the caucus was stitched together with people who didn’t share conservative views on the key issues — and that the same explosion would have happened no matter who won the race. In her words, they “allowed enemy troops into our army.”
We also get into:
* Why she won’t call herself vindicated after her own expulsion in March 2025
* The reconciliation industry, the Kamloops 215 claims, and why she says there has to be a reckoning
* Whether a split right hands Eby a majority — and his $82M snap election on top of a $14B deficit
* Treaty land, foreign influence, and what “nation to nation” really means
* Who the establishment actually is: US NGOs, the WEF, the old guard, and the backroom operatives who move between parties
* The legacy media blackout — why CKNW and CBC won’t say her name
* Her pitch to Conservatives who feel homeless tonight
This is the kind of conversation you won’t get from the legacy outlets. Watch it, share it, and get more eyeballs on it.

7:11 Sep 18 26 Ep# 310 | Avery Hnatuk | "A Citizen Adds. A Citizen Doesn't Take."
2026/09/19
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Every so often you meet a young person who makes you rethink what the next generation is capable of. Avery Hnatuk is one of them.
I met Avery at Capitalism & Morality last weekend. She’s just out of high school, homeschooled, and a committed Christian. She won the Youth UCP debate in 2025, and she’s now one of the youth speakers at WeUnify, October 3–4 in Calgary.
Family first. Avery credits her confidence to her parents rather than the curriculum. Their rule was that your immediate family is the most important unit you’ll ever have. Your siblings will stand beside you at your parents’ funerals, and home is a safe place to mess up. When your identity is anchored there, it doesn’t disappear when the basketball season ends.
Homeschool kids spend their days with people older and younger than them, not just same-age peers. That’s why they can hold a real conversation with adults. Sometimes that reads as awkward, and her answer to that was one of the best lines of the night: “I’d rather be weird and right than normal and wrong.”
What a citizen actually is. Avery’s WeUnify talk takes citizenship back to its roots in Sparta, Athens, the Magna Carta, Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. Her definition isn’t the Carney or EU version. A citizen isn’t a consumer of whatever the government feeds them. A citizen produces and adds value, and leaves the city, the province and the country better than they found them. We still care for the widow, the orphan and the elderly, but we don’t build a life on handouts.
That’s the Alberta I want to live in: we build, we’re generous, and we take care of each other as a community, not by government decree. It ties directly to my recent series, No One Is Coming to Make You a Man.
Affordability. Her generation is scared it will never afford a place without three roommates. A firefighter’s salary used to support a whole family. Avery blames Ottawa for much of it. She also says the individual still has power: live like no one else now so you can live like no one else later.
The EU and Carney. Avery calls the EU socialist and poisonous to the way she lives. Europe is broke, Volkswagen is shutting down, and France is riddled with crime. She contrasts that with Poland, where MEP Dominik Tarczyński is making waves by refusing illegal entry. Why hand Canada’s problems to people thousands of kilometres away who are creating more problems of their own? And she says Carney, a finance guy, has never once explained why any of this benefits Canadians. It’s just Orange Man bad, EU good.
We wrapped on Friday’s news that the US and Denmark reached a security deal on Greenland. It’s going to get spicy.
Avery’s closing thought: whether Alberta stays in Canada or goes sovereign, Alberta is a unicorn, and it has enough productive citizens to make itself succeed.

Elaine Ellinger doesn’t have a publisher, and she says she never will. After Charlie Hebdo and Salman Rushdie, she says no one will touch her work, so she prints it herself and sells it cheap because she wants people to read it.
Her latest project took her through nearly 5,000 pages of Islamic school curriculum. Her finding: children are taught to love Muhammad before they’re taught his history, taught to pray at seven under rules they don’t know come from Sharia, and taught that Islam abolished slavery and leads the world in human rights. She says Sharia isn’t named until grades 10 to 12, long after it has been practiced.
That led to The Deen Fallacy. Ellinger traces the problem back to Elizabethan trading companies and John Locke’s principle of toleration. Western observers saw mosques and prayer and filed Islam under “religion.” Ellinger argues the doctrine itself rejects that word in favour of deen, a system governing everything from law and finance to which hand you eat with. Her remedy is a legal threshold: no system gets legal status unless its doctrine is consistent with the Charter.
Then the Alberta angle. Ellinger says a former Deputy Premier co-founding a halal finance corporation cannot be unaware of what these products require: a fatwa to create them and a Sharia board to approve every application. She cites Muslim banker Muhammad Saleem’s Islamic Banking: A $300 Billion Deception and Patrick Sookhdeo’s work on Sharia finance, both arguing that “Islamic” mortgages are conventional interest in different clothing.
She also says she mailed 120 copies of her book to Canadian politicians at her own expense. Her read on why so few listen: they rely on advisors, and the advisors ask the wrong people.
Her books are on Amazon. Ask your library to stock them.

7:11 Sep 14 26 Ep# 308 | Xi Van Fleet | Canada Is a Colony of Communist China
2026/09/15
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Xi Van Fleet was a schoolgirl during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. She was sent to the countryside at sixteen. She came to the United States in 1986, and in 2021 she stood up at a Loudoun County school board meeting to oppose critical race theory — and the clip went around the world. She’s now the author of Mao’s America and, with dissident Yu Jie, Made in America.
This is her sixth time on Unscrew the News, and she opened with a warning aimed squarely at people who think the fight is over: too many conservatives declared victory after 2024. Woke is not dead. DEI is not gone. It took decades of patient institutional capture to get here, and one election does not undo it.
From there we went to the students filming themselves celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Xi’s concern isn’t the politics of it — it’s that a generation has been raised without the ability to tell right from wrong. She traces that to two failures: a school system that pushes ideology instead of history, and a church that stopped holding the moral floor. Her line: Christianity is upstream of culture, and culture is upstream of politics. Pull the root and everything above it rots.
Then the part that will get argued about. Xi says feminism isn’t worse than communism — it is communism. Same oppressor-versus-oppressed frame, different label. She walked me through how the CCP mobilized Chinese women with the promise of liberation, then delivered them into the fields as “human resources,” attacked femininity itself as bourgeois, and turned a generation of girls into “iron girls.” Look at the photos of China’s leadership today, she said. Count the women.
And that’s the pattern she says Westerners keep missing: every new marginalized category is a new division, and every group that helps them take power becomes expendable the moment power is secured. Her warning to anyone counting up their victimhood checkmarks — you are not at the top of the handout list. You’re useful. That’s all.
We spent the back half on Canada.
Municipal, provincial, federal — nobody answers a question anymore. Xi says that’s not incompetence, that’s what a bureaucracy big enough to be unaccountable looks like, and it’s the road to the rest of it. I raised Toronto’s plan for city-run grocery stores and she laughed, because she grew up shopping in them: rotting produce nobody cared about, rationing, and police smashing the stalls of peasants who dared sell their own vegetables in the city.
On Mark Carney: a globalist whose family, schools, property and former employer are all American, running an artificial hate campaign against the country he loves. On the EU: yesterday’s USSR, built so nations surrender sovereignty. And when I asked whether Canada is a danger to the United States the way we’re going, she didn’t hedge — you’re a colony of communist China now, and Washington is not going to let Canada become the next Iran on its border.
She’s working on a third book. Deeper than the first two, she says, going all the way back to the root.

7:11 Aug 30 26 | Ep# 307 | Marco Pfeiffer |"Middle Class Financial Advice Is Designed to Keep You in the Middle Class."
2026/08/31
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Marco Pfeiffer grew up lower middle class in Germany and heard the same things you heard in Canada. Money doesn’t grow on trees. A penny saved is a penny earned. He came to the United States at 26 for what was supposed to be a two-year posting — a line on the resume, a chance to learn real English. He stayed. Within ten years, with no American work history and a shaky command of the language, he was Chief Financial Officer of a $150-million company, working sixty, eighty, ninety hours a week.
He had the title he’d wanted his whole life. And, in his own words, corporate had killed his spirit.
Then in 2016 he lost the job. Two or three months out of work, on a salary well above average, he discovered something that rattled him: he was completely dependent on that paycheque. He owned one rental house at the time — a place he used to live in and decided to rent out rather than sell. An accidental landlord.
That was the hinge. He went back to work in finance, but from that point on he bought every rental property he could and learned how to scale. By 2020 he owned 25 single-family homes generating $400 to $500 a month each at roughly a 10% cash-on-cash return. That replaced the CFO salary. He walked away from a career he’d poured tens of thousands of hours into and never looked back.
The advice that’s supposed to keep you there
Marco’s central claim is one worth sitting with:
Middle class financial advice is designed to keep you in the middle class.
Not accidentally. By design. As he put it on the show — the system is not broken, the system works exactly as it is designed.
Consider what you were taught. Save. Live within your means. Get out of debt. Pay the house off early. There’s nothing wrong with living within your means, Marco says, and he isn’t preaching recklessness. But nobody ever taught you that debt comes in two kinds. Bad debt sits on things that lose value — your car, your credit card. Pay those off fast. Good debt sits on appreciating assets that cash flow, ideally enough to cover the debt itself.
So why does a billionaire take out a mortgage? Because long-term fixed debt is a bet against your own currency. Your $2,000 payment ten years from now isn’t $2,000 today. Inflation shreds your purchasing power — and it shreds the real value of your debt right alongside it. That’s how Washington carries forty trillion dollars without the roof falling in. Forty trillion isn’t what it was thirty years ago. Tell someone in 1996 that number and they’d have told you to get off the crack pipe.
Which brings us to the friendly little chart your bank hands you at signing. Make one or two extra payments a year and you’ll clear that thirty-year mortgage in twenty-two. How thoughtful. Marco’s response: do you really believe they’re telling you that because they want less of your interest?
The middle class is a tax trap
Here’s the part that stings for anyone on a T-4.
When you get paid, the money is gone before you see it. Say the cheque is $10,000 and the rate is forty percent. You see $6,000, and you build your entire life around $6,000 — the car you can’t afford, the mortgage you can’t carry, the restaurants you don’t go to. The other four thousand never existed as far as your daily life is concerned.
Marco pays tax on what’s left at the end of the year. You pay tax before you’re allowed to live. Same country, same rules, entirely different game. There’s a saying in the States he’s fond of: there are two tax codes, one for the educated and one for the uneducated, and both of them are legal.
None of this is taught in school. Not how the tax code works, not how to keep more of what you earn, not how compounding works, not how to open a chequing account. You learn plenty of other things. Marco’s read: the foundation of the whole arrangement is to keep us financially and economically illiterate, because people on the hamster wheel don’t leave the hamster wheel.
Nineteen forty-three
If you want a single date that explains the modern taxpayer, it’s 1943.
Before that, an American who earned $10,000 was handed $10,000 and then wrote a cheque to the government. People hated it — visibly, viscerally, every single year. So during the war a senator had a glorious idea: take it out of the paycheque so they never see it. Temporary, of course. Wartime measure.
Three or four generations later we don’t merely tolerate it. We can’t imagine any other arrangement. And when a portion comes back the following spring, we say thank you — for the return of our own money.
The same trick, Marco notes, that took the dollar off gold for a few months. Fifty-odd years and counting.
And it’s worth remembering what came before all of it. For roughly 140 years — until 1913 — the United States had no income tax at all. It went from a handful of colonies to one of the most prosperous nations on earth funded by tariffs and by bonds that citizens chose to buy when they agreed the bridge was worth building. Marco is a free-market man and no great fan of tariffs. But he’ll say this much: used properly, with no income tax on the other side of the ledger, it is not a bad way to run a country.
Which is precisely the argument we’re making in Alberta. Let the resources and the businesses fund the roads, the schools and the hospitals. Keep a small consumption tax on what people actually use. Keep government to the few things government is for. That’s not a fantasy. That’s a description of North America for most of its history.
The Canadian problem — and the way around it
Marco is straight with us, and I appreciate it: what he did in the US is close to impossible to replicate here.
We don’t have thirty-year fixed mortgages. Our access to credit is tighter. And the ratio that matters — rent to home value — simply doesn’t work. He can buy a solid $200,000 house in Mississippi or Alabama and rent it for $2,000 a month. Try that on a $700,000 Calgary property renting at $2,000. You aren’t even covering the mortgage. He’ll say it plainly: Calgary is a fine real estate market and a poor rental market.
So his philosophy is this — go where your money is treated best. Americans in New York and California do exactly the same thing, investing in states where the numbers work.
Can a Canadian do it? He’s already helped Canadians, a Brit and an Australian do it. You won’t get the best rate and you’ll put more down. After two or three deals, the terms improve because the lenders know you. And he doesn’t use banks at all — he uses private lenders, which in the US is a multi-billion-dollar industry of institutions that simply aren’t banks. He hasn’t taken a bank loan in about eight years.
His view of the banks, on why you’d hand them your savings in the first place: whatever you give them, they lend out ten or twelve times over.
Why a house beats a screen
One last thing, and it’s the part I liked best.
Real estate isn’t fashionable right now. Everyone wants the stock that’s up twenty percent. Marco owns stocks and trades them, so this isn’t purism. But take a run-down house that’s an eyesore on the street, renovate it, and hand a family a home they’re happy in — you have built something. It’s hard to tell that story about a click on a screen. Shares used to come with a certificate you put in the safe and were proud of. Now it’s numbers and clicks and nothing to hold.
Same reason I keep telling you to get some silver. If the machines go dark tomorrow, a hundred Maple Leafs in your hand is a different feeling than a balance you can’t reach. Tangible. Dirt, or metal, or a roof over a family.
He’s coming to Alberta
Marco already had a ticket to the Vancouver conference this format grew out of — small world. He’s never been to Alberta, he wants to come, and he says he feels strongly about our cause. So the invitation is open and public now: come north and teach Canadians how to put their money where it’s welcome.

7:11 Aug 26 26 Ep# 306 | Nicolas Hulscher MPH | "It may be the worst risk-benefit profile in history."
2026/08/27
Unscrew The News Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
There’s a particular kind of number that stops you.
Nicolas Hulscher gave me one this week. His team at the McCullough Foundation took the FDA’s own briefing document — the one prepared for the officials who voted to approve the new mRNA flu shot — and ran the risk-benefit calculation the FDA didn’t run.
To prevent one hospitalization from influenza, two people had to die of unexplained causes. Around four thousand had to suffer an adverse event. About three hundred had to suffer a disabling grade 3 reaction, the kind that stops you from carrying on with your day.
That’s not an activist’s estimate. That’s their data, arranged the way any honest regulator would have arranged it.
The risk ratio for unexplained deaths came out at 2.55 — two and a half times more death with the mRNA product than with the traditional flu shot. And that ratio appears nowhere in the FDA’s document. Hulscher’s word for the omission was fraudulent. He was careful about it. He said they were supposed to do that comparison, as far as he’s aware, and they didn’t.
They approved it anyway.
I asked him the only question that matters here. How? How does an agency that exists to protect the public sign off on that?
His answer was blunt: they’re captured. Particularly by Moderna. He said someone must have given those officials large sums of money, because he can’t find another explanation. One of the key people involved in the approval has spent his entire career working on gene therapy injections.
We’ve all watched the revolving door for years now. You work at the FDA, then you work at Pfizer, then you’re back. I asked whether that’s still a regular occurrence. “Very regular,” he said. “Very, very regular.”
Can they be unbiased?
“They can’t be. It’s impossible, literally.”
The industry that doesn’t want to cure you
We opened on cancer, and I’m glad we did, because it sets up everything else.
Calgary spent something close to a billion dollars on a new cancer institute. Beautiful building. And the treatments inside it are the same treatments we’ve been running for decades — chemotherapy and radiation, at over a hundred thousand dollars per patient per year, with results that don’t justify the price.
Hulscher’s point isn’t that no one is trying. It’s that the only things that get approved are the things somebody can own. Patentable biologics. Gene therapies. Immunotherapies. Anything you can’t put a fence around never makes it out of the lab.
He gave me an example I hadn’t heard. Health Canada approved a clinical trial for dandelion root in cancer. The animal work was startling — implant mice with human tumours, give them dandelion root, and the tumours don’t grow. Human trials were supposed to follow.
They never happened. It “mysteriously never happened,” as he put it.
Meanwhile cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the world and the rates keep climbing. Whatever we’re doing isn’t working. It is, however, generating large profits.
And now Moderna is out on a media tour promoting an mRNA cancer shot for melanoma, without publishing data. Same platform. Same lipid nanoparticles that travel to every organ system. Except instead of telling your cells to make spike protein, this one tells them to make tumour neoantigens — mutated tumour proteins — which then get expressed on your heart muscle cells and your neurons and flagged for destruction by your own immune system.
They gave people the shot that produced turbo cancer. Now they’re selling the shot that’s supposed to fix it.
Sixty-four million mosquitoes
We changed gears to something I hadn’t expected to be talking about in 2026.
Google — the company that opened with “don’t be evil” as a mission statement — has filed an experimental use permit with the EPA to release tens of millions of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes into the wild in California and Florida. Hulscher’s figure was 64 million. He called it one of the largest open-air biological experiments in American history.
The stated purpose is suppressing mosquito-borne illness. In Florida there have been roughly five West Nile cases. Hulscher isn’t sure what’s being suppressed.
What he is sure of is the ecology. Birds, bats, frogs and fish eat mosquitoes. Knock out the mosquitoes and you knock out their food source, and that cascades.
He’s also sure of the business model, and this is the part worth sitting with. Google already did a smaller release in Fresno. It worked — the population dropped. Then they stopped, and the mosquitoes came roaring back within a season.
Which means the product isn’t mosquito suppression. The product is a subscription. Contracts with municipalities and states, renewed every year, forever, because the moment you stop paying, the problem returns. That’s the end goal: a release program in every state.
Gates has been at this longer. He funds Oxitec, which released millions of GM mosquitoes in the Florida Keys. He funds the World Mosquito Program, which has put billions of bacteria-infected mosquitoes into the environment worldwide.
The difference now is that a web browsing company is doing it on U.S. soil.
Where the viruses went
Remember hantavirus? Ebola? H5N1?
Hantavirus is done. Dead-end outbreak, over months ago, and Hulscher says he predicted it would be a dead end shortly after it started. Secretary Kennedy later confirmed it. The fear campaign was intense and it was for nothing.
Ebola is still being pushed as the worst outbreak ever. What doesn’t get said is that it isn’t going to become a pandemic. Ebola spreads through infected bodily fluids. It spreads in the Congo because the infrastructure isn’t there and people share rooms and treatment is limited. There have been thirty or forty Ebola outbreaks in thirty years, most of them in the Congo. This is not new.
So why run the cycle?
Because fear is the funding mechanism. The more fear, the more support for developing vaccines, and the more likely people are to take them when they arrive.
Then Hulscher dropped the detail that made the whole thing click. They began developing mRNA Ebola shots for the Bundibugyo strain a few months before that outbreak was declared.
You can’t make that up.
Create the fear, sell the fix. We’ve watched this play run so many times it should be embarrassing to still be describing it.
The good news, and he offered it himself: not as many people are buying it. A large number have woken up. We’re in a better position than we were five or six years ago.
The house of cards
Last item, and it’s a big one.
The researcher whose name sits on the study regulators and the American Academy of Pediatrics have used for two decades to say vaccines don’t cause autism is expected to plead guilty to money laundering and wire fraud. He’s accused of stealing more than a million dollars in CDC grant money — money earmarked for autism and genetic disorder research.
He was indicted over a decade ago and spent years as a fugitive. He was on HHS’s most wanted list. Germany extradited him back to the U.S. and he’s been in federal custody since.
I asked Hulscher the obvious question. Does the fraud touch the science?
He was careful. He can’t prove statistical manipulation. But he said if the man was stealing at that scale through grant fraud, it wouldn’t surprise him if the same hands were using statistical tricks or falsifying data to produce the result they wanted. His position: it needs to be investigated, and every paper carrying his name should now be in question — including the one in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Is it the card that pulls down the house, or is he a patsy so everyone else can say the mess has been cleaned up?
Hulscher doesn’t think they’ll be able to use him as an exit. But he might. They may try.
And on Fauci — the DOJ is talking about indictments. Hulscher’s read is that contempt of Congress is the easiest charge to land, since Rand Paul’s committee already voted to hold him in contempt and the criminal referral is submitted. Beyond that, prosecution requests have gone to fifty state attorneys general.
There are people online organizing a GoFundMe for his legal defence. He was the highest paid employee in the United States government. I think he’ll manage.
What’s next
Hulscher’s team is finishing a comprehensive paper on mRNA injections and cancer. They’ve identified 35 separate mechanisms by which these shots can induce or accelerate cancer, and they take apart the new mRNA cancer vaccines and explain why they’ll be hazardous and why they’ll fail.
Watch for it.
This man has taken more incoming than most people could stand and he keeps publishing. If you want to follow his work directly, it’s at nicolashulscher.com.
