The Diagnosis We Never Wanted to Hear
2026/09/29
In 1979, Ron and I stood in a little church in Chicago and promised each other for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, for better or for worse. We meant every word. We just had no idea what those words would eventually hold. This summer, after months of testing, appointments, and waiting, Ron and I received a diagnosis we never wanted to hear. In this deeply personal episode, I'm sharing a little of how we got here, what life looks like for us right now, and what God is teaching me about covenant, presence, and staying in the day we've actually been given. A difficult diagnosis can make it remarkably easy to "grieve forward," imagining losses and difficulties that haven't happened yet. I'm learning to come back to the man I love who is right here, right now, and to the deeper truth that whatever the future holds, we will never experience it apart from Christ. A small personal request: We are deeply grateful for your prayers, love, and encouragement. We have a medical team and a plan we feel confident about, so please don't send medical research, treatment recommendations, books, podcasts, or other medical advice. Your prayers and kindness are more than enough, and we appreciate them very much.   **** LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: 👍 Follow, rate, and review The Pace of Grace Podcast on Apple or Spotify   **** LET'S CONNECT: Find me on Facebook @kavery Find me on Instagram @CoachKimAvery
Encore: When the Way Is Unclear
2026/09/08
Imagine sitting in a small, dimly lit room, your heart pounding as you wait for something painful that may or may not happen—a shock, literally. The uncertainty of not knowing when, or even if, it will strike hangs over you like a storm cloud. Then, you're presented with a choice: wait it out or press the button and shock yourself right now to end the waiting. What would you do? Surprisingly, a study from the University of Virginia found that many people chose to endure the pain immediately rather than face the discomfort of uncertainty. This fascinating insight gives us a glimpse into how we handle the unknown—and how much we fear it. What if we could embrace the unknown as a space where we slow down, notice God, and trust the process, rather than rushing into action? Today, we're exploring how to find peace and grace in seasons where the way forward isn't clear, and why it's okay to not have all the answers. Tune in to learn: How to navigate uncertainty with grace and patience. Why forcing action can increase stress rather than relieve it. The benefits of slowing down and noticing God's presence in the unknown. Practical ways to trust God when you don't have a clear plan. How embracing uncertainty can open the door to new possibilities and deeper trust. Uncertainty might be uncomfortable, but it's also where we can experience the wonder of walking with God, one step at a time.   💡Today's Big Idea: When the way is unclear, God is still near. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Pause in the midst of your uncertainty and just notice and enjoy what God has for you there.   *** LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: The Pace of Grace Community: Learn more or join for only $10 a month. Encore: The Grace-Filled Work of Not Giving Up
2026/08/25
What do you do when your best efforts seem to disappear into thin air? You pour out your heart, offer your gifts, share your message… and hear nothing but crickets. A few people cheer, but momentum fizzles. Others smile politely, but their eyes are elsewhere. And the silence makes you wonder, Is any of this making a difference? In today's episode, we explore a deeper, grace-paced way of looking at our work—especially when it feels like nothing is working. Together, we'll talk about: The quiet heartbreak of unnoticed effort What Jesus did when people misunderstood or rejected Him The kind of fruit that grows slowly, deeply, and sometimes invisibly How to stay faithful when the results don't show up right away You'll be encouraged to rethink: What success really means How God's grace reshapes our expectations Why the work you're doing—right now—matters more than you know *** 💡Today's Big Idea: We're not responsible for the soil, only the sowing. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Name one area where you've been discouraged in your ministry or creative work. Then, instead of measuring impact, ask: What does faithfulness look like here today? Week by week, step by tiny step, we'll unpack and savor one small aspect of grace and leave with one small step to take. That's it. Encore: The Surprise of Slow Productivity
2026/08/04
What if doing less could actually lead to more—more peace, more fruitfulness, more joy? In a world that celebrates hustle, hurry, and high output, slowing down can feel like falling behind. But what if it's actually the path to deep transformation and lasting impact? In this episode, I share the story of a year that felt like a detour but became one of the most fruitful seasons of my life. Along the way, we'll explore surprising research, spiritual truths, and biblical rhythms that invite us to trade burnout for abiding. Encore: What if I Made This Easy?
2026/07/28
Have you ever felt like life is a never-ending uphill battle, where every task feels like scaling Mount Everest? You're not alone. Recently, I found myself in that very place—both literally and metaphorically—during a sweltering summer hike. In my determination to power through, I ignored the quiet nudge to take it slow and enjoy the journey. The result? A rather embarrassing episode that left me lying flat in the middle of the street, wondering why I hadn't just made it easier on myself. It got me thinking: What if we approached life's challenges with grace instead of grit? What if we made room for rest, let go of the pressure to always achieve more, and listened to that gentle voice asking, "What if you made this easy?" God's grace isn't about doing all the things perfectly. It isn't even about doing all the things; it's about knowing when to give ourselves the space to breathe and take the next step with intention. There's wisdom in that, and today, I'm diving into how we can shift our mindset from striving to thriving by making things easier—not harder. Tune in to discover how to: Tackle one major change at a time to avoid overwhelm. Break big goals into smaller, manageable steps. Focus on progress over perfection. Maintain a sustainable pace for long-term success. Schedule rest and reflection to refresh your spirit. *** 💡Today's Big Idea: When you can, make it easy. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Choose one area of your life, and find one way to make it easy or at least easier. *** LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: The Pace of Grace Community: Learn more or join for only $10 a month. Encore: The Myth of Being Behind: God's Greater Grace
2026/07/21
It's a terrible feeling—that sense that you're falling behind while everyone else is moving forward. A friend lands their dream job while you're still figuring things out. Someone gets married while you're still waiting for a date. A colleague expands their reach while you feel like you're standing still. The longer the delay, the louder the inner voice whispers, "You should be further along by now." And with that comes the restlessness, the self-doubt, the temptation to force something just to feel like you're making progress.  But what if that feeling is lying to you? What if God's pace for your life is not only different—but better?   By listening, you'll: ✔ Identify the "I'm behind" mindset and how it sneaks into your thinking. ✔ Recognize the telltale signs—impatience, envy, striving, or self-doubt—that come with it. ✔ Learn to release self-imposed deadlines and false comparisons. ✔ Discover how delays can be signs of God's greater grace. ✔ Find courage to trust God's pace—even when it doesn't make sense. ✔ Learn to rest in His perfect plan, knowing you are never behind.   If you've ever felt stuck in the waiting room of life, wondering if God has forgotten you, this episode will remind you of a deeper truth: You are not behind. God is always on time. *** 💡Today's Big Idea: You are not behind. God is always on time. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Make this into a breath prayer, and practice it throughout each day, so it becomes an anchor place and pace you can return to again and again. Breathe  in: I am not behind. Breathe  out: God is always on time. *** LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: 🎧 God's Greater Grace Podcast Series: Invitation to God's Greater Grace, The Pitfalls of People Pleasing , When Hurry Hurts   🌿The Pace of Grace Community 🌿 Slow down. Encore: When Hurry Hurts: God's Greater Grace
2026/07/14
Why are we always in such a hurry? It's a question that stopped me in my tracks one day when my daughter asked, "Why?" in response to my go-to phrase, "Hurry up!" Why, indeed? You'll discover: How hurry undermines love in our relationships. Five practical steps to recognize, release, and replace hurry with trust. The surprising freedom and joy that come when we let God set the pace. Take a deep breath, slow down, and join us for a fresh perspective on living life differently. I'm Empty, But Everyone Needs Me
2026/06/09
What do you do when you're running on empty, but everyone still needs something from you? This episode explores the quiet tension of being deeply needed and deeply depleted. When you've carried too much for too long, slowing down can feel risky, even irresponsible. But staying depleted has a cost, too, and eventually what looks like faithfulness on the outside begins to erode you from within. This episode is a gentle invitation to stop measuring love by how much you can endure and begin discerning what is actually yours to carry. Because God does not just love the people you serve. He loves you, too. In this episode: Why slowing down can feel risky The hidden cost of staying depleted How to discern what is yours to carry Why stepping back may be an act of trust   💡Today's Big Idea: God doesn't just love the people you serve, He loves you. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Don't rush past this moment. The Speed of Grace
2026/06/02
What if grace has more than one speed? This episode explores the different rhythms of life with God and the grace available for each one. Some seasons ask us to sprint with focus and energy. Some bring us to a full stop. Others move slowly through uncertainty, while many simply ask us to keep showing up with steady faithfulness. The pace may change, but God's grace remains. In this episode: The four different speeds of grace How to discern the pace God is inviting you into Why faithfulness is not measured by speed The grace available for every season   💡Today's Big Idea: The pace may change, but God's grace remains. ⚡️Today's Small Step: Ask God one simple question: What pace are you inviting me into during this season? **** LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: ☀️ Practice the Presence of God—50+ Ways to Enjoy God All Day ☀️    If you would like some ideas for ways to live within your God-given limits and still enjoy His presence all day long, download your free guide, Practice the Presence of God—50+ Ways to Enjoy God All Day.   It's full of gentle, grace-paced ideas to help you stay connected with Him right in the middle of real life. www.paceofgrace.com/free    **** LET'S CONNECT: Find me on Facebook  @kavery Find me on Instagram @CoachKimAvery

2026/05/26
What if the very strengths that make you effective are also the ones quietly wearing you out? This episode explores how good gifts can become heavy when responsibility turns into over-functioning, discernment into overthinking, and compassion into carrying what was never yours to hold.
