Britain or Just England? Looking Beyond Today's News Headlines
2026/10/19
In this 30-minute news review, I take a look at some of today's headlines, examining the stories behind them and offering my own observations on politics, government and the British media. One of the main stories comes from Metro, looking at how the area in which a child grows up can determine the services, support and opportunities available to them. Is there a postcode lottery when it comes to childhood, education and public services? I also discuss Prime Minister Andy Burnham's plans to tackle passengers playing loud music and videos on public transport, including proposals for fines. Meanwhile, Burnham faces questions about financial dealings involving Manchester City's owners during his time as Mayor of Greater Manchester. Another issue running through today's discussion is the way newspapers and broadcasters frequently use the words Britain, British and UK when reporting research or statistics that actually relate to England alone. Why does this distinction matter? And how accurately are the experiences of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland represented in supposedly nationwide news coverage? Join me for half an hour of headlines, commentary and reflections on the stories making the news. Topics covered: - The childhood postcode lottery and access to public services - The Metro report on inequality and where children grow up - Andy Burnham and fines for playing music on public transport - Manchester City, financial scrutiny and Burnham's mayoral record - Government policy and political accountability - England versus Britain: misleading geographical labels in news reporting - Scottish perspectives on UK news and media coverage #UKNews #AndyBurnham #PostcodeLottery #ManchesterCity #BritishMedia #Scotland #NewsCommentary

1251 UK Potty Training Crisis? Parents Given Guides as Children Start School in Nappies
2026/10/05
Why are growing numbers of children starting school without being toilet trained? In today’s podcast clip, I look at the potty-training scheme pioneered in York, where families were sent practical guidance before their children started Reception. The York pilot has been linked to a sharp fall in the number of children arriving at school not fully toilet trained, and around 20 other local authorities in England are now looking at adopting the approach. Is this sensible support for parents — or does the fact that potty-training guidance is needed at all tell us something bigger about childhood, parenting and school readiness in Britain today? Recorded 5 October 2026.

2026/09/09

In this English listening and British culture video, I talk about Emergency Services Day, sometimes known as 999 Day, which recognises the work of the emergency services in the United Kingdom. But I also give my own, slightly more critical view. Do we really need another special day? What does it say about British society and the way we commemorate public services? This is a chance for English learners to practise listening to natural British English while learning about life, customs and culture in the UK. 🎧 Listen for useful vocabulary connected with: • emergency services • British society and culture • commemorations and special days • expressing opinions and disagreement • police, fire and ambulance services Whether you agree or disagree with my opinion, use the video as an opportunity to listen to authentic English and learn something about contemporary British culture. #LearnEnglish #BritishEnglish #BritishCulture #EmergencyServicesDay #999Day #EnglishListening #UKCulture #EnglishLearners
1243 Fight Procrastination Day: Stop Putting It Off and Start Today
2026/09/06
Today is Fight Procrastination Day, a day dedicated to tackling those things we keep putting off. In this episode, I take a look at procrastination, why it can be so easy to delay the things we know we need to do, and how simply getting started can sometimes be the hardest — and most important — step. Whether it's work, studying, exercise, household jobs or a personal goal that's been sitting on your to-do list, Fight Procrastination Day is a good excuse to stop saying "I'll do it tomorrow" and make a start today.
1242 Richard O’Sullivan, Mr. T on Netflix & Driverless Cars in London
2026/09/04
In today’s podcast, I look at three very different stories making the news. I reflect on the death of British actor Richard O’Sullivan, remembered especially for Man About the House and Robin’s Nest. I then turn to Mr. T — forever associated with B. A. Baracus in The A-Team — and a new documentary on Netflix. Finally, I look at driverless cars in London and what the arrival of autonomous vehicles could mean for the capital. Three very different stories bringing together memories of classic television, popular culture and a glimpse of how technology could change everyday life.
