Then, New World Pictures brings Burr back for their weirdly comedic, less successful Dr. Pepper-riddled take on The Return of Godzilla, renamed Godzilla 1985. We talk about the history of this now archaic but endlessly interesting form of adaptation, the importance of film editors, and Burr's life as a gay man with deep respect for Godzilla. As disastrous as the 1998 American Godzilla film may have been, one unequivocally good thing came out of it: Godzilla: The Series, a dark Fox Kids sci-fi show that reinvented and rearranged elements of its predecessor into something much smarter and cooler.
