Barry Hearn: “Britain’s Economy Is A Time Bomb Waiting To Explode” | Says Who? Podcast
2026/10/28
Barry Hearn OBE built Matchroom from a £100 company into a global sports empire worth well over £1 billion. He is the son of a bus driver from an Essex council estate, a chartered accountant by training, and a promoter for more than 50 years across snooker, darts, boxing and pool. His son has left for Monaco. Barry is staying. In this conversation with Brogan Garrit-Smith he makes his case: that Britain is governed by the politics of envy, and the people who build things are being treated as easy targets; that the millionaires who have already left are not coming back, and nobody is replacing them; that a working-class saver can now face up to 67% tax on a pension and another 40% when they die; that Great Britain Limited is borrowing too much and failing at the very top; that he nearly lost everything before Sky TV arrived like the cavalry; that he missed his son's birth to win £50 at snooker; and that the only thing he really fears is his wife.We have been told Britain is still a place where anyone can build something.Says Who?He explains:1. Why he says Britain runs on the politics of envy, and what it is doing to the next generation2. Why he says the people who have left will not be coming back3. What he says a Martian would make of the British tax system4. What a £50 snooker game taught him about the price of winning5. Why he says money buys you the freedom to tell the truth6. Danny Morel: The Lie Of Self-Improvement And Why You Need To Look Inward | Says Who? Podcast
2026/10/21
We have replaced God with Google, spirituality with self help, and prayer with scrolling, and we call it progress. Gen Z now spends 7 hours and 43 minutes a day looking at a screen. That is 122 days a year, gone, and the self improvement industry those same people turn to for an answer is worth 46 billion dollars. Danny Morel built a career in business before walking away from the idea that success alone was enough. He is an author and a spiritual teacher, and the voice behind The Higher Self, and he spends his year between the Dominican Republic and Austin. In this conversation with Brogan Garritt-Smith he makes his case: that personal development has become a way of outsourcing your own power, so the guru is always going to let you down and the answer was never in the book or at the event; that feeling stuck in life is not a sign you need another course, it is the predictable result of looking outside yourself for twelve years; that the midlife crisis is not a breakdown but a spiritual awakening arriving late; that the disconnection is by design, because the people selling you the cure are the ones who need you searching; that you can go through anger and let it go in ninety seconds rather than carry it for a lifetime, and most people carry it for a lifetime because nobody ever told them; that your self worth was set by how much love you received, not by what you earn, and that whatever anyone calls self love starts there; that the work the inner child needs cannot be done in your head, which is where everyone tries to do it; and that British children now spend more time indoors than inmates do in prison. Brogan says she has been doing this dance of self development for twelve years, and what she thinks it actually takes. We are being told that the way out is one more book, one more ice bath, one more guru. Says Who? He explains: Why the guru is always going to let you down, and what outsourcing your power costs youWhy you feel stuck in life after years of personal development, and what the stuckness is actually telling youWhy a midlife crisis is a spiritual awakening nobody prepared you forHow to let go of anger in ninety seconds, and why almost nobody is ever taught itWhere self worth is set, and why no amount of money moves itWhat inner child healing needs that no course can give you, and where people look insteadHow to find your purpose when you have spent a decade asking an algorithmWhat screen time is doing to a generation, and the number nobody adds upChapters: 0:00 Living In Fear As A Society 0:58 We Replaced God With Google And Spirituality With Self Help 1:56 Why Your Phone Keeps You Spiritually Disconnected 6:23 The Cost Of City Life, And Feeling Stuck In It 10:44 The Midlife Crisis As A Late Spiritual Awakening 13:13 Money Is Energy, And It Mirrors Your Self Worth 20:02 Self Love, And Where Your Self Worth Was Really Set 23:14 How To Let Go Of Anger In 90 Seconds 29:18 The 46 Billion Dollar Self Development Industry 33:18 Find Your Purpose, With No Destination To Arrive At 37:07 Fear Is Love, Distorted 40:58 Phones, Partners, And Switching Off The News 44:00 Inner Child Healing Is A Process, Not A Fix 45:03 Parenting Tips For Protecting A Child From Your Wounds 46:34 Screen Time, And Children Indoors More Than Inmates 51:42 Define Success And Happiness For Yourself Says Who? with Brogan Garritt-Smith. Dr Courtney Raspin: Ozempic Side Effects Nobody Warns You About | Says Who? Podcast
2026/10/15
2.5 million Brits are on weight loss drugs and another 3.3 million are waiting to start. In America it is more than 30 million people, and children as young as 12 are being prescribed them. Dr Courtney Raspin is an eating disorder specialist and psychologist, and co-author of The Weight Loss Prescription alongside Dr Max Pemberton. She has spent her career helping people understand their relationship with their bodies, weight and food, which makes her the person to ask what happens when a drug designed for one group of patients reaches everybody else. In this conversation with Brogan Garritt-Smith she makes her case: that these drugs are a tool, powerful for the patient who genuinely needs them and dangerous for the one who does not; that most people come off them and put the weight back on four times faster than if they had lost it any other way; that what you lose along the way is muscle, which matters most for the people who can least afford to lose it; that the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry are paid twice over, once for making us unwell and once for the cure; that the drug dims hunger and dims everything else with it, the gym, alcohol, desire, the whole appetite for living; and that nobody is born hating their body, which means somebody taught us. Brogan tells her own story in this one. She says that if these drugs had existed when she was younger she would have grabbed them with both hands, and what it took instead to get out. We are being told that weight loss drugs are the safest and most effective way to lose weight. Says Who? She explains: Why the weight comes back four times faster, and what that does to a body that has already been through itWhat you are losing that is not fat, and why it hits the older population hardestWho is actually making the money, and which part of the problem pays nobodyWhat she sees happening to girls who are 12, and what she says is being taken from themWhy the dimming reaches alcohol, exercise and desire as well as foodWhat a healthy relationship with food looks like in practice, and where it starts0:00 The cold open1:30 Here's the question, Dr Raspin2:38 You'll gain it back four times faster4:17 Easier to sell a solution in a syringe9:29 Nobody is born hating their body11:29 The lesser of two evils, until it isn't13:16 You upload a picture and the pen arrives18:02 Children as young as twelve21:09 The lights go dim on everything24:18 The three phases, and the one nobody does28:27 A real life experiment on the public, in real time31:04 The pills are coming33:34 Who benefits, and where there is no money34:25 How you rebuild a relationship with food36:39 My son made me heal my relationship with food42:09 So let's settle it44:08 After Says Who? with Brogan Garritt-Smith. Dr Becky Foljambe: Why we need to take screens out of schools? | Says Who? Podcast
2026/10/10
Nobody would put their name to the word safe. Dr Becky Foljambe is a GP. She gave evidence to a parliamentary committee in March on screens in classrooms, and she arrived at this conversation having spent the year asking one question that nobody has answered: where is the proof that iPads in schools are safe for the children sitting in front of them? When Brogan's team went looking for the person who said it was, they could not find one. No name, no company, no face. The claim is everywhere and it belongs to nobody. In this conversation with Brogan Garritt-Smith she makes her case: that Covid was a grotesque experiment in what happens to children's learning and their wellbeing when they sit inside on screens all day; that there is no evidence of safety and no evidence of efficacy over traditional teaching, and that the academic work points the other way; that devices are now handed out as readily as a water cup in a classroom; that two million children in this country need speech and language input and the therapists on her team have seen caseloads rise 27% in two years; that the average age of first access to porn is 13 and most children never went looking for it, it was fed to them; that A&E consultants are seeing fewer broken arms and more self-harm, acute distress and psychosis, and nobody is asking those children about their screens. And that she has already heard enough, in her own seat, as a doctor. Then Brogan says something she has not said on this channel before, about the child she was. We are told screens are helping our children learn better. Says Who? She explains: What a doctor sees in the surgery that does not show up in any studyWhy she says there is no evidence of safety, and what the evidence there is actually showsWhat screens appear to be doing to children's bodies, their minds and their wordsWhy ADHD symptoms may be reversible in children whose lives have been blighted by themWhat happened when Brogan's team tried to find the person who said this was safe0:00 The cold open0:56 Screens make our children learn better. Brogan: I Stopped Trying To Get There | Says Who? Podcast
2026/10/01
Brogan Garritt-Smith spent years making a weekly interview podcast called Getting There, asking more than a hundred people how they got where they are. Then she stopped, came off social media and the internet for ten months, and says she went in expecting to come back behind everybody else and found the opposite. In this episode she lays out why she went and what she is doing now: that she did not stop because she stopped loving conversations but because the question she was asking changed, that she stopped wondering where there was and started asking who decided there was a there in the first place, that 18 to 24 year olds in the UK spend close to 100 days a year online and the average teenager receives 237 notifications a day, that we have moved from using AI as a tool to handing it the parts of life that make us human, and that children are sitting in classrooms preparing for jobs that may not exist by the time they get there. She says she is not making this show to tell anyone what to think. She explains: What she says ten months off the internet did to her, and what she expected insteadWhy she says she stopped Getting There, and the question she says replaced itWho she says drew the map to success, and whether she wants to follow itWhat she says we have started handing to AI, and what she thinks it costs usWhy she says the biggest lesson of her life is that there is not always a right or a wrong0:00 I thought I would come back behind3:04 237 notifications a day are not feelings6:01 I didn't stop, the question changed9:02 I don't want to fall into my life12:04 Archaic classrooms for jobs that may not exist15:01 There isn't always a right or a wrong Says Who? with Brogan Garritt-Smith. Mo Gawdat: AI is making us more intelligent | Says Who? Podcast
2026/09/28
We are back. Says Who? is the new series, and there was never a question about who should open it. Mo Gawdat was the very first guest on Getting There, so it only felt right that he is the first guest of this chapter too. Mo was chief business officer of Google X until he resigned in 2017, and he has spent the years since trying to convince heads of state, prime ministers and CEOs that AI needs to be built ethically. He says every one of them nodded and then did nothing, and that by 2024 he had to admit he was doing nothing either, he was only talking, so he built an AI of his own and gave it the mission of helping people find and nurture true love. In this conversation with Brogan Garritt-Smith he makes his case: that AI will make most people dumber and a few people geniuses, and the difference is whether you debate the answer or ask it for the football scores; that he is borrowing 100 IQ points from his own AIs; that we are already living in the dystopia and he counts 10 to 12 years to recover from it; that the problem was never the machine but a world which decided that anything legal does not have to be ethical, so you fix yourself first and AI will magnify what is fixed. He says direct human connection is what we are built for and the internet is depriving us of it, that it sets our expectations from other people's pretending, and that after promising screens would give us more friends we produced the ultimate loneliness pandemic and are now being sold a non-human companion to cure it. We have been told AI will make us more intelligent. Says Who? He explains: Why he says AI will make most of us dumber, and what the few are doing differently Why he says we are already in the dystopia, and how long he thinks it takes to recover What he says the internet takes from us, and where he says your expectations now come from Why he says the loneliness we are being sold a cure for is one we built ourselves What he says love has to do with mathematics, and the mission he says he gave his AI And a bonus: Mo introduces Emma.Love, and says why he thinks dating apps are built to keep people swiping, and what he is building in their place. 0:00 The cold open 0:58 Here's the question, Mr Gawdat 6:32 Where being human stops and the AI begins 11:31 I pity you, if I may say 16:18 If you've not noticed, we're already in the dystopia 21:45 The fourth inevitable, somewhere between now and 2034 27:13 The toothbrush test Larry Page taught us 32:00 There are people in Lebanon hiding from robots 37:01 At least disapprove of it in your heart 41:55 The corner bookshop economy is about to come back 47:06 The woman who married an AI in China 52:31 Legal does not have to mean ethical 57:34 For Siri to hear its name, it hears everything 1:02:32 The equation, and rain at your ex's wedding 1:07:32 Everyone nodded about ethical AI and did nothing 1:12:34 Finding the one is a mathematical problem 1:18:03 Secure in your attachment until you give up 1:23:03 When was the last time you got her flowers 1:28:08 The first ten minutes were very awkward 1:33:02 A butler on your phone, and models debating 1:38:01 Your future is not decided, so engage Emma: https://app.emma.love Emma on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emma.love.ai Says Who? with Brogan Garritt-Smith. Scrolling to Death: How Big Tech Is Rewiring Our Children’s Brains | Nicki Petrossi
2026/01/02
We are living through a moment future generations will question: how did we not see this sooner? In this powerful and confronting conversation, I’m joined by Nikki, founder of Scrolling to Death, to expose the hidden dangers of social media, AI chatbots, gaming platforms like Roblox, and addictive technology designed for profit — not safety. We explore how children are being: - Groomed, sexualised, and isolated by AI bots - Exposed to violent and explicit content through “kids” games - Addicted by algorithms engineered to hijack developing brains - Driven toward anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm and suicide Nikki shares real cases from lawsuits, internal tech documents, and heartbreaking stories of families whose children were harmed — or lost — to these platforms. This is not a fear-based conversation. This is awareness. This is about protecting what matters most: our children. If you’re a parent, teacher, or simply someone who feels something isn’t right with the digital world we’re handing to the next generation — this episode is essential listening. We’re Losing Ourselves: Phones, Weight-Loss Drugs & The New Mental Health Epidemic | Max Pemberton
2025/11/26
What is really happening to our minds? In this gripping episode of Getting There, Brianna sits down with Dr. Max Pemberton — NHS doctor, psychiatrist, journalist and one of the most outspoken voices in British medicine — to expose the brutal truth about our attention crisis, body image culture, and the explosive rise of weight-loss drugs. Max shares what he has seen firsthand across eating-disorder units, obesity clinics, and psychiatric wards — from patients eating 100 bags of Wotsits a day after bariatric surgery to teenagers comparing themselves to anatomically impossible bodies on Instagram . Together, they unpack: 🔹 Why we can no longer think, focus or be alone with ourselves 🔹 How social media is rewiring our brains — and our children’s 🔹 The dark truth about weight-loss injections and why most people are using them dangerously 🔹 Why obesity is rarely just about food — but about emotional pain 🔹 How society has lost touch with reality, our bodies and what “being human” even means 🔹 The psychology behind bingeing, body dysmorphia & perfection culture This episode cuts through the noise, the labels and the shame — to ask one question: 👉 What is happening to our minds? And can we pull ourselves back? If you care about mental health, social media, food, children, or the future, this is a conversation you cannot afford to miss. ##gettingtherepodcast #mentalhealth #socialmediaaddiction #bodyimage #weightlossdrugs #ozempic #eatingdisordersupport Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
