The Yes Trap: Why Saying No Feels Impossible (and How to Start)
2026/08/25
Ever said yes and immediately regretted it? This episode digs into why 'yes' can feel like part of who we are—people-pleasing, the fawn response, fear of disappointing—and offers one tiny, powerful practice: pause and say, “Let me think about it.” Start small, be gentle with yourself, and remember boundaries are a practice, not proof you’re a bad person. Try the pause and see what you actually want. CONNECT WITH DR. LAURIE BRUCE If something in today’s episode resonated with you, I’d love to stay connected. Take the How Connected Are You? Why High-Achieving Women Can’t Relax: The Nervous System & the Psychology of Rest
2026/08/11
Why is it so hard to rest, even when you know you’re exhausted? For many high-achieving women, slowing down can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. You may finally have a moment to yourself, only to find your mind racing, your body feeling restless, or a nagging sense that you should be doing something more productive. In this episode of From Both Sides of the Couch, we’re taking a closer look at the psychology and nervous system science behind why rest can feel so difficult. If you’ve spent years being responsible, productive, dependable, and attuned to everyone else’s needs, your nervous system may have learned to associate staying busy with safety, control, or even self-worth. So when you finally stop, your body and mind don’t necessarily experience it as relaxation. We’ll explore: • Why high-achieving women often struggle to slow down, even when they desperately need rest • What your nervous system has to do with your difficulty relaxing • Why stillness can sometimes bring up anxiety, guilt, or uncomfortable emotions • The difference between genuine restoration and simply distracting yourself from discomfort • How productivity can become connected to your sense of worth • Why “just relax” is often much easier said than done • How to begin listening to your body and nervous system instead of overriding their signals • What it can look like to practice rest without turning it into another thing you have to get right Rest isn't simply about doing less. It’s about developing the capacity to notice what your mind, body, emotions, and nervous system are communicating and responding with greater awareness. If you've ever thought, “I know I need to rest, but I don't know how to actually stop,” this episode is for you. Take a pause, settle in, and consider what might happen if rest became less about earning a break and more about learning to listen to yourself. I invite you to take one idea from today’s episode, put it into practice, and see what happens. If today's episode resonated with you, I'd love to stay connected. 🌿 Take the "How Connected Are You?" Why You Don’t Feel Like Yourself Anymore (And How to Find Your Way Back)
2026/07/21
Have you ever looked at the life you built and wondered why you still do not feel like yourself? In this solo episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I talk about the quiet, gradual ways women can lose connection with themselves while caring for everyone else, moving through responsibilities, and living on autopilot. This is not about needing to blow up your life or start over. It is about noticing the small ways you may have stopped checking in with yourself. I also talk about why later rarely comes, how autopilot can make life feel like something you are managing instead of something you are living, and why reconnecting with yourself can begin with one simple practice: noticing without judgment.   Listen to this week's episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch: Why You Don’t Feel Like Yourself Anymore (And How to Find Your Way Back)  If today's episode resonated with you, I'd love to stay connected. 🌿 Take the "How Connected Are You?" What Regret Can Teach You
2026/07/14
Hey friends! What if regret is not a sign that you are failing, but a signal pointing you back to what matters? In today’s solo episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I am talking about the emotion of regret, the pressure of the no regret lifestyle, and why painful emotions often carry important information. I also share a personal update about the podcast returning to an audio-only format and what this decision has taught me about values, alignment, and making room for what matters most. Join me as we look at how regret can remind us of our values, why we need to sit with difficult emotions before we try to change them, and how small shoulds can slowly fill our lives until there is very little room left for ourselves. If you have been feeling pulled in too many directions, saying yes because you should, or wondering whether your life still fits who you are becoming, this conversation is for you. Why Intimacy Breaks Down: The Truth About Trauma, Desire, and Sex Therapy with Vanessa Cushing
2026/07/07
Hey friends! Why does intimacy feel so hard when your nervous system does not feel safe? In today’s episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I am joined by Vanessa Cushing, Licensed Professional Counselor and certified sex therapist, to talk about nervous system dysregulation, desire discrepancy, trauma, communication, and what sex therapy actually looks like in real clinical practice. Join us as we unpack why desire can shut down when the body is in survival mode, how blame keeps couples stuck, why communication needs more than just talking, and when therapists should consider referring clients to a trained sex therapist. This conversation is for therapists working with intimacy concerns and for anyone who wants a more compassionate, informed way to understand desire, trauma, and connection. We also talk about Vanessa’s work with Sex Therapy Pro and why accessible, shame-free education around sexual health matters. Do Licensed Therapists Still Need Supervision With Lorain Moorehead
2026/06/30
What happens when therapists become the people everyone else turns to, but their own support starts to disappear?  In today’s episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I am joined by Lorain Moorehead, therapist, consultant, and host of The Self-Care Therapist podcast, to talk about why supervision, consultation, and therapy still matter after licensure. Join us as we unpack the fine line between supervision, consultation, and therapy, why therapists need spaces where they can be honest about what is coming up for them, and how ongoing support helps clinicians grow instead of quietly carrying everything alone. Getting licensed does not mean therapists stop needing guidance. Whether we are learning a new modality, navigating a difficult case, or noticing our own reactions in the room, support is part of ethical and sustainable clinical work. If you are a therapist, supervisor, consultant, or helping professional who has ever wondered where your own support is supposed to come from, this conversation is for you. Episode 86: Gray Divorce: Why More Couples Are Starting Over After 50 with Dr. Elana Hoffman
2026/06/23
Hey friends! What happens when the life you expected no longer fits the person you are becoming?   In this episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I am joined by Dr. Elana Hoffman, licensed Clinical Psychologist, author, and host of Talk Relationship to Me, to talk about gray divorce and why more couples are starting over later in life. We get into what gray divorce means, why it may be increasing, the emotional grief that comes with ending a long marriage, and the identity shifts that can happen when the future you imagined suddenly changes.   Join us as we unpack the questions people start asking in midlife, the role of financial independence, sexuality, family patterns, and why divorce can be both heartbreaking and liberating. We also talk about the difference between initiating divorce and being left, why men need more compassionate support after divorce, and what it can mean to create a healthier path forward for yourself and your family.   There is no single way to move through divorce. Sometimes you need space to grieve. Sometimes you need therapy, coaching, community, or support from people who understand. And sometimes healing means realizing that starting over later in life does not mean you failed. It means there may still be a whole life waiting for you on the other side.   If midlife has left you questioning the life you built, the relationship you stayed in, or the future you thought was certain, this conversation is for you. 2026/06/16
Hey friends! How do you heal and recover from a broken relationship? 2026/06/02
Have you ever felt like you and your partner are speaking completely different languages?   In this episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I am with Keith Jordan, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and couples therapist with over 40 years in mental health, to talk about what actually breaks down communication in relationships and what it takes to repair it. We get into Gottman's Four Horsemen, Imago Relationship Therapy, the role of childhood in adult defensiveness, and an AI-powered app Keith built to support couples between sessions.   Instead of waiting until things boil over, what if you had the tools to catch it before the explosion? This conversation is full of them.   Listen to this week's episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch: The Hidden Reason Couples Keep Having the Same Argument with Keith Jordan.   Enjoy this episode? Episode 82: What Is Self-Worth, Really? Psychotherapist Unpacks the Science of Feeling Worthy with Dawna Daigneault
2026/05/26
Have you ever felt like your sense of worth was something you had to earn - and never quite got there?   In this episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch, I sit down with Dawna Daigneault, lead author of Understanding Self-Worth: A Guide to Worth Conscious Theory and Psychotherapeutic Practice, to explore what self-worth actually is and where it comes from. Together, we unpack the difference between lost self-worth and denied self-worth, why so many of us grow up building on the wrong foundation, and how birthright self-worth changes everything.   Instead of asking, "What did I do wrong?" try asking, "Was my worth simply not honored?" Because your worth was never gone - it was just denied.   Listen to this week's episode of From Both Sides Of The Couch: What Is Self-Worth, Really? Episode 81: Why You Can't Stop Overthinking (And What Your Nervous System Is Really Doing)
2026/05/19
Hey friends! In this solo episode, we're closing out the three-part nervous system series with a deep dive into overthinking — what it really is, why you can't just stop it, and what actually helps.   Overthinking isn't a flaw or a discipline problem. It's your nervous system trying to solve for uncertainty and discomfort. This episode breaks down why that loop keeps going, why distraction alone isn't enough, and offers practical, body-based strategies to interrupt the cycle and start to feel safer from the inside out.   If you're exhausted from going around and around and never quite getting anywhere, take a moment for yourself and join me on From Both Sides Of The Couch.   Enjoy this episode?
