Since I Became a Mother: The Identity Shift No One Prepared Me For
2026/09/22
Episode Summary
Becoming a mother changed more than I ever expected. I spent so much time preparing for pregnancy, birth, and bringing home a baby—but I wasn’t prepared for how profoundly motherhood would change me.
In the first full episode of Since I Became a Mother, I’m sharing my own story: who I was before motherhood, my birth experience, the difficult early postpartum months, postpartum depression and anxiety, severe sleep deprivation, exclusively breastfeeding, and the feeling that somewhere along the way I had lost parts of the person I used to be.
I also share why I created this podcast, why Season 1 focuses so heavily on the first year of motherhood, and why every conversation this season comes from something I found myself searching for when I was a new mom. This isn’t a story about getting back to who I was before—it’s about figuring out who I’m becoming now.
In This Episode

This is what worked for me and lead to a great pregnancy outcome, but there’s only so much we can control. For me, I knew doing as much as I possibly could would help me feel my best, knowing I tried my best and gave my best effort. I didn’t want to have any regrets or wish I had done things differently, so I gave myself peace of mind but locking into what the research says and giving it my best shot. I hope this episode helps demystify some of the information out there and helps you find a game plan for your preconception journey if that’s what you’re looking for!Resources:

Why preconception health is important Some basic statistics on TTC Key areas to consider and adjust in your life if you’re trying to improve your preconception health Understanding your cycle and fertility Male partner’s role in preconception health Emotional and mental preparation for TTC This is the first of 10 episodes in this season, and I’ll be deep diving into several of these topics in their own episode, but this is an initial overview. There is SO much information out there, so my goal is to synthesize it as much as possible so you don't have to do all of the reading and research that I did! Next week, I’ll be deep-diving into my own personal preconception protocol that worked amazingly well for me, so look for that one. I came to this information through reading several books and a lot of peer-reviewed research published in medical and scientific journals. On the website, I’ve linked all of the sources for this episode as always.
