Welcome to the Hope and Help for Fatigue and Chronic Illness Podcast. It's our mission to help people that have some really complicated illnesses. People that have post viral syndrome like long COVID and ME/CFS or chronic fatigue. Those that have had toxic exposures like gulf war illness, mold exposures, pesticides and heavy metals.
These illnesses can present very similarly, they can actually look the same to your clinician.
You may have fatigue, post exertional malaise, foggy brain and many other symptoms that seem to be common across many illnesses. Underneath all of these illnesses, the causes of the symptoms are very similar. We know first hand how hard it is to get access to meaningful information and care when you find yourself or a loved one here. It is our hope to give you, bit by bit, the knowledge and ideas that we have seen make a positive impact on individuals just like you. And that you will take all those threads and begin to weave back together a healthier person.
Brought to you by the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine where we have over 200 years of combined clinical experience in Neuro-Inflammatory disease.

https://givenow.nova.edu/assaf-family-and-community-me-cfs-endowed-fund-campaign/?a=1
In this episode of the Hope and Help for Fatigue and Chronic Illness podcast, host Haylie Pomroy brings together Dr. Nancy Klimas, nurse practitioner Irina Rozenfeld, and disability attorney Edward Dabdoub for a candid, clinically grounded conversation on navigating disability claims for chronic illness, ME/CFS, and long COVID.
The panel addresses why delaying a disability claim can be medically and legally harmful, how detailed clinical documentation builds the foundation for a successful case, and why insurance companies systematically challenge chronic illness claims by attempting to reclassify them as mental health conditions.
The conversation also covers the federal ERISA law that governs most private disability insurance policies, the use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing as objective evidence, the importance of having both specialized clinical and legal representation, and how disability can serve as a tool for recovery rather than an endpoint.
Dr. Nancy Klimas, a clinical immunologist by training, is the director of the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, who has allotted her life to helping other people find cures for their complex illnesses that were once considered helpless. She works with her fellow medical experts in researching and analyzing the deeper causes of such diseases, particularly on the neuro-immunity side, to provide the best option suited for every single case or story they handle.

In Episode 100 of Hope and Help for Fatigue and Chronic Illness, Haylie Pomroy sits down with Dr. Jackie Junco, Chair of Integrated Medicine at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, for a wide-ranging conversation on one of the most important drivers of chronic illness: inflammation.
Dr. Junco and Haylie break down what chronic inflammation actually is, why the body struggles to self-regulate in today's high-stress, toxin-heavy environment, and what people living with ME/CFS, long COVID, POTS, mast cell activation, and other chronic conditions can do to support their inflammatory health right now. The conversation covers the two-way relationship between stress and inflammation, the hidden pro-inflammatory impact of sugar and processed food additives, and a toolkit of accessible, evidence-informed strategies — from acupuncture and acupressure to grounding, breathwork, movement, and functional mushrooms.
For anyone navigating chronic illness, looking to reduce systemic inflammation, or seeking practical tools they can implement today, listen to this episode of Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness.

In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy sits down with Dr. Nancy Klimas, Director of the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, to answer the community's most pressing questions about viral reactivation in ME/CFS and long COVID.
Dr. Klimas explains what latent viral infections are, how Epstein-Barr virus reactivation is one of the strongest predictors of who develops long COVID, and why the COVID virus itself may be persisting in the GI tract of some long COVID patients long after the acute infection resolves. She walks through the specific tests patients can request to assess viral reactivation, why the IgM and IgG interpretation taught in medical school is outdated, and what the immune response patterns actually reveal about whether a virus has recently reactivated or gone quiet.
The conversation also addresses why siloed medicine consistently fails this patient population, why one treatment will never be enough for an illness that imbalances the endocrine, immune, autonomic, and inflammatory systems simultaneously, and why this is the worst possible time to give up.
This is the field's best and most essential message for anyone still searching. Tune in to the Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness podcast.

In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy shares insights with Dr. Irma Rey, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and environmental medicine at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, to explore how environmental factors are damaging the immune systems of patients with ME/CFS, Gulf War illness, and chronic inflammatory disease.
Dr. Rey explains how mold toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, plastics, and electromagnetic exposure disrupt immune signaling at the cellular level, causing cytokine dysregulation, natural killer cell dysfunction, and viral reactivation in patients who were previously able to keep latent viruses in check. She introduces the concept of total body toxic load and explains why detoxification efforts fail when environmental exposures are not simultaneously reduced. She also shares practical guidance on water filtration, the Environmental Working Group's tap water database, the dirty dozen produce list, and sleep hygiene as it relates to immune restoration.
This is a conversation about the environmental piece that most physicians are not trained to look for, and why it may be the missing key for so many patients who have tried everything else. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness.
Dr. Irma Rey, M.D., is the Director of Medical Education at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. Board-certified in internal medicine and environmental medicine, she is a former president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and has spent over a decade treating patients with ME/CFS, mold illness, environmental toxicity, and immune dysfunction alongside Dr. Nancy Klimas.

From Disease Management to True Preventative Healthcare with Deepa Verma, M.D., AIHM

Donate to the Institute:
https://givenow.nova.edu/assaf-family-and-community-me-cfs-endowed-fund-campaign/?a=1
In today's episode, Makena Thompson speaks with Dr. Deepa Verma, a double board-certified MD in integrative and anti-aging medicine, to examine why our population is sicker than ever despite greater access to healthcare.
Dr. Verma argues that what we call healthcare is actually sick care. Rather than teaching people how to live well, the system waits for disease to develop and manages it with pharmaceuticals that treat symptoms rather than causes. She draws on 13 years of integrative practice to explain how the modern food supply, environmental toxins, glyphosate, microplastics, and chemical exposures in the home are driving the rise in autoimmune disease, infertility, hormone disruption, and chronic fatigue. She also addresses why so many patients are told their labs are normal when they clearly are not well, and what a truly preventative model of care would require.
If you are tired of being managed and ready to understand the root cause, this episode is your starting point. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness.
Dr. Deepa Verma is double board certified in family medicine and integrative functional medicine from Rutgers Medical School (formerly known as Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Verma completed her family medicine residency at Somerset Medical Center and was elected Chief Resident. After years of searching for deeper fulfillment treating patients traditionally, Dr. Verma changed course. She followed her passion to educate and heal individuals as a whole, rather than just focusing on treating symptoms. This led her to found Synergistiq Integrative Health in 2013. From the beginning, her goal has been to create a practice that could give patients an opportunity for a healthier and happier version of life. She understands frustrated patients who are fed up with traditional medicine.Dr. Verma's training has taught her that in order to find a long-term cure, patients need treatment that addresses the root cause of their symptoms, not just addressing their lab numbers. She is also an accomplished author, blogger, and regular television personality.

In today's episode, Makena Thompson sits down with Dr. Jonas Axelsson, a Swedish physician-scientist specializing in post-viral diseases, to address one of the most urgent questions in ME/CFS and long COVID care: why do standard blood tests keep coming back normal when patients clearly are not well?
Dr. Axelsson breaks down what standard diagnostic panels actually measure, why cellular oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction remain invisible to serum chemistry, and why a clean blood test is not the same as a healthy patient. He also outlines two distinct immune patterns he has identified in this patient population, explains why current criteria-based diagnosis is not sensitive enough to distinguish between them, and shares why he believes validated diagnostic tools and mechanism-based treatments are within reach within five years.
Learn why your labs can be normal and your illness can still be very real. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness.

In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy sits down with Dr. Philip DeFina, a leading researcher and clinician in advanced neurorehabilitation, to explore how personalized, non-invasive brain interventions are changing outcomes for patients with traumatic brain injury, disorders of consciousness, long COVID, and neurodegenerative disease.
Dr. DeFina explains his approach of combining electrical, magnetic, and chemical interventions simultaneously, a philosophy that has helped over 300 patients emerge from severe disorders of consciousness after being told elsewhere that recovery was not possible. He breaks down the neuroinflammatory feedback loop connecting the brain, the hormone system, and the immune system, the science behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy, his specialized free program for military veterans, and his detailed protocol for addressing the infectious encephalopathy underlying long COVID brain fog.
This is a conversation about what becomes possible when brain medicine catches up to the complexity of the brain itself. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness.
Dr. Philip DeFina has over 40 years of experience as a neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist. In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy talks with Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, a PhD immunologist from UC Irvine and founder of ReStem, for a conversation that brings cutting-edge cell therapy research directly to the chronic illness community.
Dr. Gonzalez breaks down the science of immune exhaustion, explaining why so many patients with ME/CFS, long COVID, POTS, and autoimmune disorders are stuck in a state of dysfunction that conventional labs and appointments often fail to capture. He introduces the concept of senescent cells, what he calls zombie cells, and explains the specific role natural killer cells play in clearing viral burden and restoring immune balance.
Together, Haylie and Dr. Gonzalez explore how cell therapies, specifically quality-cultivated umbilical cord lining stem cells and activated natural killer cells, are being used in clinical studies to re-regulate immune systems that have gone into either hyper-inflammatory overdrive or complete exhaustion. Dr. Gonzalez also clarifies the significant difference between legitimate, rigorously tested cell therapies and the inconsistent products flooding the market under the stem cell label.
Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, PhD is a regenerative medicine expert and researcher with over 20 years of experience in cell biology, stem cell science, and immune health. He earned his PhD and BS from the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on immune system interactions following spinal cord injury. Known for his work in regenerative medicine, longevity, and cell therapeutics, Dr. Gonzalez has authored scientific publications, holds multiple patents in the field, and frequently teaches and speaks internationally on stem cell biology, immune health, and anti-aging science.

https://givenow.nova.edu/donations-for-me-cfs-research-2026
In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy sits down with Dr. Annie Lin, a licensed board-certified nutrition specialist in integrative and functional nutrition, for a conversation that gets to the root of why food is not just part of the healing equation. It is the foundation of it.
Dr. Lin walks through the science of chronic inflammation as a physiologic process, one that can be triggered by stress, viral infection, environmental toxins, and food itself. She explains how food functions as information for our genes, activating or quieting inflammatory pathways depending on what we consume. Together, Haylie and Dr. Lin make the case for clinical nutrition as a non-negotiable member of every care team, not an afterthought.
They also explore the role of culinary spices as targeted, nutrient-dense medicine; the nutrient depletion side effects that often go unaddressed when patients are prescribed medications; and why the initial patient intake, the moment someone finally feels heard and validated, can be the turning point in a healing journey.
Dr. Annie Lin is a Licensed and Board-Certified Nutrition Specialist focusing on integrative and functional nutrition approaches for optimizing health and addressing root causes of clinical imbalances. She is a dedicated assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition, teaching a variety of courses including functional nutrition in the graduate program. With a doctorate in Clinical Nutrition from Maryland University of Integrative Health, and training from the Institute for Functional Medicine, she combines academic rigor with practical expertise in using Food as Medicine.
