Before getting into this case, I start by looking back at the episode I released two shows ago: “He Threw His Dog Down the Stairs.” That episode covered the disturbing abuse of a bulldog in Britain, who was repeatedly thrown down a staircase, and I break down what happened, who was involved, and the legal ramifications surrounding the case.  Then we get into THIS case. A 62-year-old retired school teacher in Clermont, Florida, was accused of killing his girlfriend’s family dog with a baseball bat. He claimed the dog was aggressive, but police disputed that account. So what really happened? Who was involved? What did investigators say? And what happened after the arrest? An older woman in a blue coat called police claiming a pit bull was going around the neighborhood attacking people and other dogs. But then the doorbell camera tells a very different story. The dog appears to be calmly walking around, sniffing the ground and showing no obvious aggression toward the woman. She approaches the dog with a gun and shoots. The dog runs away. Then there’s another disturbing question: Was race a factor in what happened? The woman who owned the dog and her neighbors were Black, and allegations have been made that the shooting was motivated by racial hostility. Was this woman genuinely afraid of the dog—or was there something else behind what happened?
