Why Spit is Surprisingly Helpful: Saliva Actually Supports a Healthy Body
2026/10/06
The benefits of saliva are easy to miss—until you know how many jobs saliva actually has! Read the full episode + resources: https://becomingnatural.com/benefits-of-saliva/ In this episode, we look at how saliva helps you taste, chew, swallow, and begin digestion, while also buffering acids, supporting enamel remineralization, and helping regulate the oral microbiome. We follow the surprising nitrate-to-nitrite pathway that connects bacteria on your tongue with nitric oxide and blood-vessel function. We also look at persistent dry mouth, why medications and mouth breathing matter, and when it deserves more attention. And we explore the unusual Gospel passages where Jesus used saliva in healing and what people in the ancient world understood about it. By the end, you may never think of spit as “just spit” again. In This Episode You'll Learn: • How saliva supports enamel and helps buffer acids in the mouth • How bacteria on the tongue help convert nitrate to nitrite as part of the nitric-oxide pathway • Why medications, mouth breathing, and other factors can contribute to persistent dry mouth • Why saliva appears in several Gospel healing accounts and how people in the ancient world understood it Keep Listening Fluoride Skeptics: Hidden Truth Makes for a Safe and Healthy Life https://becomingnatural.com/fluoride-health-concerns/ This episode is educational and not medical advice. If dry mouth sticks around, or it started after a medication change, bring that to a dentist or the prescriber.
Why Am I Still Tired After 8 Hours of Sleep? It's More Than Just Hours
2026/09/03
Why am I always tired even after I sleep? Eight hours tells you how long you slept. It does not tell you whether the night was uninterrupted, well timed, or restorative. Read the full episode + resources: https://becomingnatural.com/why-am-i-always-tired-even-after-i-sleep/ Sleep is one of your body’s major restoration periods. Your brain remains active, your body moves through different stages of sleep, and those stages do different jobs. That means a chopped-up night can feel very different from a night that was allowed to move through its normal cycles—even when both add up to eight hours. We also talk about the difference between feeling sleepy and simply feeling spent, why timing matters, and how being technically “in bed” is not always the same thing as being fully off duty. Before you overhaul your bedtime, notice what the night actually looked like: Was it chopped? Mistimed? Were you still mentally on duty? Or does the exhaustion seem bigger than sleep? Then write down one small marker the next morning. Fewer wake-ups. Faster return to sleep. A little more energy. Small improvements count. In This Episode You’ll Learn • Why eight hours does not automatically equal a restored morning • Why different sleep stages matter • How interrupted and mistimed sleep can affect restoration • The difference between feeling sleepy and feeling spent • When ongoing exhaustion may need a closer look • One simple way to notice whether your nights are improving Resources Mentioned in This Episode nodpod Gentle Pressure Sleep Mask https://amzn.to/4i7USbY Weighted Blanket https://amzn.to/4yfHpUa Keep Listening on Becoming Natural Episode 33: The Shocking Link Seen Between Sleep Loss and Your Health https://becomingnatural.com/sleep-loss-health-link/ Some links may be affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Read the full episode + resources here: https://becomingnatural.com/natural-bug-spray/ In this episode of Becoming Natural, we walk through which repellents have real evidence, how to use them safely on kids and adults, and when picaridin may be the wiser choice for tick country. Synthetic Clothing: 5 Reasons to Worry About Your Favorite Yoga Pants
2026/06/04
Could synthetic clothing be affecting your skin, comfort, and daily exposure to textile chemicals without you ever realizing it? Most of us wear polyester, nylon, spandex, and other synthetic fabrics every day. They're in our yoga pants, workout clothes, underwear, pajamas, socks, and even our bedding. Yet these materials are relatively new compared to the natural fibers humans have worn for thousands of years. 📖 Read the full episode + resources: https://becomingnatural.com/synthetic-clothing/ In this episode, we take a practical look at synthetic clothing, synthetic fabrics, polyester, nylon, athletic wear, and the growing questions surrounding textile treatments, moisture retention, skin irritation, fabric finishes, and prolonged skin contact. You'll learn what current research actually shows, where the science is still developing, and how to make informed decisions without fear or overwhelm. In this episode, you'll hear about: How synthetic clothing became the modern standardPolyester vs cotton and other natural fibersWhy heat, sweat, and moisture retention matterWhat researchers know about textile dyes, finishes, and fabric treatmentsWhy underwear, sleepwear, sheets, and workout clothes deserve the most attentionPractical fabric swaps that can reduce exposure without replacing your entire wardrobe The goal of this conversation isn't perfection. It's awareness. Many people spend nearly twenty-four hours a day surrounded by synthetic fabrics through clothing, bedding, and household textiles. Understanding how these materials interact with the body allows us to make thoughtful choices one step at a time. For many families, the simplest place to start is with the fabrics worn closest to the skin for the longest periods of time. Fasting Benefits: A Practical and Rooted Look at Biblical vs Modern Fasting
2026/05/22
In this episode of Becoming Natural, we explore fasting benefits through a practical, faith-rooted look at modern fasting, biblical fasting, body rhythm, and spiritual hunger. Read the full episode + resources here: https://becomingnatural.com/fasting-benefits-biblical-vs-modern-fasting/ What if fasting is not only about what happens when the body goes without food, but also about what the heart reaches for when comfort is removed? In this episode of Becoming Natural, Penelope explores fasting benefits through two lenses: modern intermittent fasting and the ancient biblical practice of spiritual fasting. We talk about why intermittent fasting became popular, what may happen in the body when we pause constant food intake, and how fasting can support rhythm, appetite awareness, digestive rest, and metabolic flexibility for some people. But this conversation goes deeper than eating windows and metabolism. Spiritual fasting asks a different question: What am I seeking with my whole heart? Using Scripture, personal reflection, and insights from God’s Chosen Fast by Arthur Wallis, this episode looks at fasting as a posture of dependence, surrender, prayer, humility, and wholehearted seeking. You’ll hear about: • why fasting from food requires wisdom • how intermittent fasting differs from biblical fasting • what hunger may reveal about comfort, control, and dependence • why fasting is not about punishment or performance • how Isaiah 58 reframes the heart of fasting • practical ways to approach fasting gently • why the body was designed for rhythm and the soul was designed for God This episode is educational and is not medical advice. If fasting from food is not safe for your season, health, history, or nervous system, your faithful next step may be nourishment, rest, or fasting from something other than food. Because healing is not just about what we remove. It is about Who we make room for. Read more: https://becomingnatural.com/lemon-oil-benefits In this episode, we’re talking about lemon oil benefits—but not in a surface-level, “it smells nice” kind of way. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or like your body is constantly “on,” this is a gentle, practical place to start. You’ll learn what’s happening in the brain when you inhale essential oils, why consistency matters more than intensity, and how to use lemon oil in ways that actually support your body—not add more to your plate. How to Read Labels: A Clear, Practical Guide to Hidden Ingredients
2026/04/08
Read the full episode + resources here: 👉 https://becomingnatural.com/how-to-read-labels If you’ve ever stood in the store holding two products that look almost identical… and felt unsure which one to choose, there may be a reason why. Learning how to read labels isn’t as complicated as it seems—but most of us were never taught what actually matters. Because the truth is, many front labels are designed to sell you—not inform you. Words like “natural,” “clean,” and “non-toxic” often don’t have standardized definitions, which means two products can appear trustworthy… while being completely different in terms of ingredient quality, safety, and transparency. In this episode, I walk you through a simple, practical framework you can use in seconds—whether you’re choosing supplements, food, or body care products. This is called the Becoming Natural 5-Filter Test, and once you understand it, you’ll never look at labels the same way again. Inside this episode, you’ll learn: • How to read labels without feeling overwhelmed or needing a science background • The difference between meaningful certifications and marketing language • What third-party testing actually verifies—and why it matters • How to spot hidden ingredients like “natural flavors” and unnecessary additives • Why packaging and material safety impact your exposure more than most people realize We also talk about something deeper than labels—stewardship. Not perfection. Not pressure. Just awareness. Because your body is constantly interacting with what you eat, what you put on your skin, and what you bring into your home. And small choices—repeated over time—can have a meaningful impact on how you feel. This isn’t about fear. It’s about learning how to read labels so you can make decisions with clarity instead of confusion. You don’t need to memorize ingredients. You don’t need to chase every new wellness trend. The Sweet Lie Behind “Sugar-Free”: What Artificial Sweeteners Really Do
2026/03/25
Read the full episode + resources here: https://becomingnatural.com/episode-73-artificial-sweeteners-effects-on-body Artificial sweeteners are everywhere — from diet drinks to protein powders to “healthy” snack foods — and they’re often marketed as the smarter alternative to sugar. But what do artificial sweeteners actually do inside the body? In this episode, we walk through the science behind artificial sweeteners effects on body systems, including how they interact with metabolism, appetite signaling, insulin response, and the gut microbiome. While these compounds are often labeled as “zero calorie,” they are not biologically neutral — and understanding that difference changes how we approach them. We also unpack the “diet soda paradox,” where products designed to support weight loss are sometimes associated with increased cravings or weight gain over time. This isn’t about fear — it’s about understanding how the body interprets sweetness as a signal, and what happens when that signal arrives without real energy behind it. You’ll also learn how to identify hidden artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols on ingredient labels — including common names like sucralose, aspartame, erythritol, and acesulfame potassium — and why they often show up in products marketed as “low sugar,” “keto,” or “diabetic-friendly.” If you’ve ever wondered why cravings increase after diet drinks, why “sugar-free” doesn’t always feel satisfying, or how these ingredients may impact gut health, this episode will help connect those dots in a simple, grounded way. Is Nonstick Cookware Safety a Toxic Risk Most People Miss?
2026/03/18
Nonstick cookware safety is something most people never think about — until they understand what can happen when these pans overheat. In this episode, we explore what nonstick cookware is made of, how PFAS behave in the body, and why everyday kitchen habits can quietly influence the environment inside our homes. Read the full episode + resources here: https://becomingnatural.com/nonstick-cookware-safety-toxic-risk Most of us don’t think twice about the pan sitting on our stove — until we realize how quickly an empty nonstick pan can overheat. In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at nonstick cookware safety, what these pans are made of, and what actually happens when they’re exposed to higher temperatures. We’ll walk through the science behind PTFE coatings (commonly known as Teflon), how PFAS became known as “forever chemicals,” and why overheating — not everyday use — is where most of the concern begins. You’ll also hear why bird owners have been aware of this issue for decades, and what researchers mean when they describe polymer fume exposure. This is not a conversation about fear — it’s about understanding how small, everyday choices in our kitchens can quietly shape the environment inside our homes. In this episode, we cover: • what nonstick cookware is made of • what happens when PTFE overheats • how PFAS behave in the body and environment • why empty pans are the biggest risk factor • practical ways to reduce exposure without overcomplicating your life If you’ve ever wondered whether convenience in the kitchen comes with hidden tradeoffs, this episode will help you think through nonstick cookware safety with both clarity and peace of mind. Earthing: The Promising Benefits Found in Grounding Yourself
2026/03/11
https://becomingnatural.com/earthing-grounding-benefits Have you ever taken your shoes off and stood barefoot in the grass… and noticed that it just feels good? Not dramatically different. Just calmer. Quieter. That simple moment raises an interesting scientific question: what actually happens when the human body touches the earth? In this episode, we explore the fascinating science behind earthing — also called grounding — and what researchers have discovered so far about how contact with the earth may influence the body. You’ll learn what grounding really means, how the earth functions as an electrical reservoir, and how modern life has changed our daily contact with the natural world. We’ll also explore: • the physics behind grounding and body voltage • why rubber-soled shoes changed our electrical relationship with the earth • the “human antenna” effect inside modern buildings • what grounding research suggests about inflammation, blood flow, and sleep • why the human foot may be uniquely designed for contact with the ground • a simple multimeter experiment you can try yourself Grounding has gained attention in recent years, sometimes surrounded by bold claims. In this conversation, we take a slower and more thoughtful approach — exploring what the research actually shows while remaining curious about what scientists are still studying. Along the way, we’ll also look at a deeper question. If the human body developed for thousands of years in constant contact with the earth… what happens when modern life separates us from that environment? Whether grounding ultimately proves to have major physiological effects or simply reminds us to spend more time outdoors, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how our bodies interact with the natural world God created. Sometimes the path toward feeling better isn’t complicated. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as stepping outside and feeling the earth beneath your feet.
